As you know from my reviews, I have played M rated games. I want Red Dead Redemption, but I am concerned. They understand violence in games is fake, drugs are bad (know this from family experience), people have bad language (been to New York), but the nudity is what I think will get me. I know about sex and stuff, but I also know the depiction is graphic. So, how can I convence them to look past it?

It's only T&A. If you can watch an R rated movie in front of them, you can play an M for Mature game. :)

I have watched a lot of R rated movies with my parents. They dont care about violence, but god forbid there is nudity, or my mom panics and grabs the remote like I am 3. Even the KY yours and mine comercials freak her out. My dad just laughs, but he will say no to a game for the simple reason she does.

How old are you? If your parents don't want you playing a game, you should respect their decision until you are 18 and make the decision for yourself. There is one brief scene in RDR that depicts a man and woman (nude to the waist) having sex on a table (in a less-than-loving manner). The reason behind it is ambiguous, but it is possible to construe it as possibly not consensual. Other than that, I think there are far more "adult" things in the game that I honestly couldn't see a young teenager fully grasping. Even as a teenager, I thought I understood everything, but now as an adult, I definitely did not. I say its fine if the parents are willing to explain things, but I played GTAIII at 15 and turned out alright. Though, I didn't really appreciate a game like Metal Gear Solid until into my 20's (despite first playing it at 13 and thinking I got everything).

Ah. Yes, I have gotten this many times. MY MOM IS OVERLY PROTECTIVE! I have never had a friend over, I was voice chatting with a friend, and she randomly yelled at him for talking to me. I understand that she wants to protect me, but I am doing college work, have the 3rd highest test scores in my school, and have gotten complements for being a "very mature" young man by adults. Videogames is what I do in my free time (other than reading and exercise), so I think my parents should cut me some slack. Am I right?

Oh, and what other "adult things?"

Mostly themes, which aren't necessarily explicit, but can fly over younger people's heads. RDR is very bleak and somewhat depressing (and I didn't even enjoy it as much as others), and deals with a lot of adult things I know I would have missed in my teenage years.

Adult things can range from relationships to graphical content. Your mom doesn't hate you or anything, she's just really protective. Maybe you can sit down with her sometime and try to make a comprise. But also watch out because sometimes a parent can be pyscho and think you're stomping on their earned respect by speaking up.

I wouldn't recommend bringing drama to the household just to rebel though, your parents are only required by law to care for you. They can make your life hell and work you like a dog if they meet the bare minimum of care.

I would agree with this. Most of the games I have enjoyed most this gen have usually been rated E. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed a fair share of M games... but it had nothing to do with the fact they were M rated.

There is very little nudity in RDR, there is no real prostitution really (or at least none that you can engage in), it's more or less just about the violence, language, and infrequent moral dilemmas that this game might be considered "bad" by your parents standards, there are alot of games that would be much worse though (Every GTA).

Almost every game gets rated M now if it has any type of violence.Or something bad for a 5 yr old or younger. I played GTA III when I was 5 nothing in the game was bad.Just blood and shooting.Having fun.Tell your mom either way I'll have sex in the future and trying to hide things from me won't help I won't be your little boy forever,or it's human nature to have sex, violence, etc it's happened since we were on this planet no need to change it.

well man, your best arguement would be that its art, edgar allen poe is much darker and grotesque yet they made me read that at a young age in school, i understand the protective mother mine was very similar but i had to ease her into the fact that A: i was not a child and B:mature enough to udnerstand the context of the game/music.

otherwise just let em know flat out your gonna play it regardless just not undertheir roof and you'll buy it with your own money so whats the difference

College could mean anything from middle school to high school.Several high schools I know do it to make it seem more formal. To answer your question though I would say you have a couple of options. a.Rent the game and show it to your parents b.Buy the game online and play it when they're away. c.Play at a friends house every now and then d.If you can't play RDR play a game similar to it that your parents can agree to

This is really some alien way of thinking for me... Why is violence okay but a pair of boobs is not? It reminds me of a scene in Hostel 2 I think it was, where a woman is cut up with a scythe while hanging naked upside down from the ceiling. What struck me with the scene is, it's filmed so you at no point see her breasts or intimate parts, just her torso and back that are getting slashed up. It's also no problem to then show the killer bathing in her victims blood. I guess you really think differently in america.. :D

I don't want to sound gross, but rape is far more common then murder the last time I checked. The concept behind it makes it a much easier to acomplish act and sexual desire can really drive people mad compared to killer intent which has been tabu since day 1.

***edit: Think of it this way (and also inspired by my freak friend tonight...). If you have young adults watching movies and being turned on at sexual content WHILE torture or violence takes place. They might discover a kink for it and reproduce it. While seeing a torture scene doesn't normally excite people, sexual organs involved which excite people might make a smoothie of truly freaky-don'twantonmyfrontpageofthepaper news.

Just try to explain it to them, bring up the point about the movies that you've watched, and if they don't listen then that's pretty much it and you should respect their decision, no matter how much you hate it. I'm not saying you lied or anything, but I have a hard time believing that was on youtube.

Just because stuff like this is everywhere doesn't mean people have to support it or accept it. When does stuff like this stop affecting ones mind? probably never, regardless of age. But there is that time where you can make your own choices and not have to worry about the house rules. The important part is knowing why they have these rules. Next time they ban you from watching something you should ask them why in a nice way to try and understand the rule and act mature about the subject.

Regardless, of that point though, the rating system with games (while better than Movies and TV) is still very subjective and not very good. As one poster pointed out, everything seems to get an "M" these days and it is hard to spot the 'M' games that have pixilated violence among the GTA's of the industry.

Oblivion is pretty darn clean for a "M" game. You can loot people that puts them in their underwear - pretend they are now sunbathing at a beach - and they are ugly. If it is on the PC you can mod it to pervert status... but come-on who needs to do crap like that in a day where internet porn is everywhere (case in point you have already youtubed what they didn't want you to see). There are some zombie type guts and gore, but hardly anything like a chainsaw down the middle or anything. I would let kids play it if they were teenagers - but that doesn't matter, not my rules but your parents rules. But the real question is what do you want to play? There are plenty of games out there, E, T, M and everything incorrectly rated in between.

If your in to RPG's then you may want to try KoTOR\KoTOR II good games, also I just realized that the Fable series is rated M...(WTF!?) Oblivion is also about 100+ hours of fun in my opinion. Then you have MINECRAFT which is arguably the best game ever.

While I remember what it was like to be sheltered to the point of feeling out of contact with the other kids my age when I was a teenager, your mom seems pretty lax compared to my stepmom. And it sounds like your dad can be pulled onto your side as well, if you took the right approach. That all said, you can get away with playing anything under the sun that doesn't have nudity in it. Chalk that up as a win and just accept that there are a small handful of games you won't get to play for another 3-4 years.

HAA!...

Crap, there's water all over my monitor now. :(

But seriously, I'd look into some racing games like Forza or Gran Turismo (360/PS3 respectively). For PC, well sorry can't help. But Minecraft is really boring after a while unless you're one of those guys that thinks Farmville is the most amazing game ever.

As for Fable, you find condoms in treasure chests in that game and STD's in the NPC's... All bundled up with cartoony graphics. Fable would have been the perfect 'T' game with a little editing but unfortunately doesn't hit any target audience well.

There's only one sex scene with very small nudity.

It's not like your parents will be watching when that happens.
