Gears of War was the first title that welcomed me to a new generation of gaming. With the purchase of my Xbox 360, came one of the most memorable games of my younger years. I adored Gears of War. It was brutal, intense, exhilarating and its multiplayer blew my mind. Now however, the Gears of War Ultimate Edition on the XBOX One has shown me that, just like these games here, this classic has not aged well!

We're aware that Gears of War 4 is gearing up for a degree of betrayal on its release date. Rod Fergusson said that he'll have to innovate on the original formula in order to keep fans surprised. However, he also stated that he'll be returning to the roots of the series in order to reestablish the tone and atmosphere that the original still evokes. Is that a bad thing if the Ultimate Edition wasn't that impressive?

Could Gears of War 4 Disappoint Like The Ultimate Edition Did On Release Date?

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THE WIND SAID 'HOSTILES' TO YOU?

Now, I'm aware that I'm in the minority when it comes to the critical consensus on the Gears of War Ultimate Edition. However, I stand by the fact that I really don't think the game has aged very gracefully. The great shooting mechanics and multiplayer are intact, but in terms of its dialogue, level design, and general campaign - I was not impressed, things were very uneven. Everything can't age as well as Jeff Goldblum, you know!

For me, the Gears of War franchise got better with age. Gears of War 2 took everything I loved about the original at the time and created a far superior product. Even Gears of War 3 managed to raise the bar and give us one of the greatest multiplayer experiences of the last generation. But is my lack of love for the Gears of War Ultimate Edition indicative of failings with Gears of War 4?

I'd love to hear your opinion on the demonstration of Gears of War 4 at E3 earlier this year! Personally, I was none to impressed by what was on display. Granted, it was a short teaser and it was nice to see some gameplay. But the characters seemed flat, the game was creating atmosphere just by making it REALLY dark, and I wasn't getting that true Gears vibe.

It's unfair to judge this far from release date, but I'd love to hear what you think about both the Ultimate Edition and how Gears of War 4 looked! Hit up in the comments, Gears fans.

I wasn't disappointed with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It wasn't suppose to be a whole new game. Each game got progressively better so I expect Gears 4 to follow suit and it will be a wholly new game.

I love Gears Ultimate, haven't played the campaign but it's just nice to play classic Gears multiplayer after Gears 3 ruined it by adding load outs with guns a baby could get kills with like the Retro Lancer and the Sawn Off and Team Deathmatch which removed immediate consequences for deaths and took away players from Execution.

I only have three problems with Ultimate Edition; only having 4 rounds for Execution, adding Team Deathmatch and looking back, the first Gears really had too many maps with Boom Shot, which is a so annoying now that you can't choose your own maps.

Gears 4 will be instantly disappointing for me if they add load outs again, leave all the crap they added in Gears 2 & 3 as pick ups, please.

Tbh I don't know why anyone would waste time playing this multiplayer. I agree it was probably dope in 2006 (never played it until this year) but has aged poorly. There's no way to flank, everyone either camps corners with shotguns or bunny hops from shot to shot and wiggles around like it's a twitch shooter. This is because there's no variety in guns or loadouts because you only ever have 2 starting weapons. And damn is that shotgun Godlike.

With better third person shooters out like the last of us MP or hell even uncharted I don't understand why anyone would play this, unless you only own an xbone and it's your only option for a third person shooter.

Yes. That's why you don't blindly pre-order this stuff, and why you don't blindly believe industry-insider reviews. You wait until after release and then watch gameplay vids and listen to community talk before you spend that $60.

Well, the original Gears of War a had actual horror elements, which diminished as the series progressed, being almost nonexistent in 3 and I am assuming that the same can be said for judgment. I am certain that recapturing these moments is what is meant by returning to its roots. Also, I find the dialogue in the first Gears to be the standard for the other games if the series. It has never been Shakespeare.

Personally, I did miss that atmosphere and tone from the first game and would love to see it recaptured in this new game.

Also, I hope this innovation leads to more open levels and more tactics in single player. And the others have expressed my gripes with the multiplayer

I can't comment on the ultimate edition because I don't have an XB1 yet, but I can comment on what I think about the gameplay footage of Gears 4.

I wasn't really impressed, "BUT" that's only because it was a teaser! So I'm not going to draw any conclusions until we see more footage and some core gamers get some hands on time with it.

I'm a big fan of the series as well, but we have to be realistic with our expectations

@jcrame10:

Last of us and uncharted 's mp and gameplay mechanics are not even on the same tier as gears. If you really think this, play them again. Last of us has clunky gameplay. Uncharted feels unfinished. The real engine is literally polished .

@metragold2014: really, I played the first gears and thought it was boring and mediocre. Particularly the weapon selection and map design.

@metragold2014: I am a Gears, but mechanically, its not on a whole other level. Outside of the things that were added later (tag and bag, meat shield) its just a cover shooter, which refined cover in TPS and popularized it, making it the standard.

The weapons are nice though and the chainsaw beyonat and executions are cool.

I didn't enjoy my experience with Uncharted 3 multiplayer, but it does have platforming mixed in with the combat and TLOU has stealth elements and crafting, along with a little melee combat.

Gears has a lot going for it mainly in its multiplayer and gruesome fast paced action. But that has to do with the overall design and not the mechanics alone

Honestly, I can't say. I am not a fan of the games because to me they're about as generic as they come.
