The first one I'd just pass on personally. It's extremely repetitive and shallow by todays standards. Not played enough of the second one personally to pass a proper judgement, but the makers did improve the other aspects of the game significantly.

Is there any story elements that would make me want to get the first and second one?

They are both amazing, though overall the second is better. For anyone who likes RPG's, I definitely recommend them. No, there is really not much that connects the two in terms of story.

The story is pretty much non-existant since it's all extremely simple, and the 'story' bits are far and few between if you exclude little text tidbits from the NPCs you recover housing for. There's a lot more going on in the second title though.

From what I recall reading somewhere, Dark Cloud was intended to be more fleshed out, but the project got rushed. Thus why we got what we did with it. Random-generated maps, repetitous play, and a rather unfinished story and characters.

Dark Cloud 2 (Chronicle outside North America) I feel, was what Dark Cloud was INTENDED to be like, had Level 5 not been rushed to get the first one out.

Both could be played seperately from each other, as the stories and their characters are seperate. The first could be passed over if you so wish.

I actually peffered the first over the second, Idk, it just seemed.... better :P

Both are FANTASTIC though. And if you like them, I suggest you look into a RPG called Rogue Galaxy. Its by the same developers and its overall way moe superior to Dark Cloud 1 & 2.

DC2 is in the very top of my favorite ps2 games. I've played through it atleast 3 times just because it was so fun and I couldnt stop. I love the weapon building, I love the random stages. I love the fishing and golf mini-games. The combat mechanics are great. Its really pretty damn flawless.

I've only played Dark Cloud 2, and it was one of my favorite games at the time. It'd be more reasonable to look at some reviews on the game's page rather than asking on the forums, though.

I own both games, and love both of them very much.

I've played through both of them, on more than one occasion, and recommend them to anyone.

Personally, I'd go with Dark Cloud 2 if you haven't played either. It seems a little more finished. Dark Cloud in no way is an unfinished game though. It's still an amazing masterpiece. Just DC2 seems like it would be easier to get into.

Overall, go get one of them. You are missing out.
