I recently started playing my old n64 again, and I found a third-party controller in perfect condition in my basement. So I decided to ditch the 10-year old stock controller I was using and use it instead.

Now, I vaguely remember there was some reason I never used that controller. I wasn't sure, but I thought the N64 just didn't respond to it, and behaved like there was no controller plugged in, so I thought "What's the worst thing that could happen?" and plugged it in. Then I switched the power on and nothing happened.

I think it's completely dead. There's no power light or anything. I'm positive it was the controller that killed it, because it was running perfectly fine just 10 seconds before I plugged it in. I found a few cases of this type of problem, and some people's n64 started working again the next day, while others' never recovered.

I suspect the PSU or controller port shorted out, I know for sure it is not the memory/booster pack or game pack. Any advice on how to fix it? Or at least an explanation of what causes this? Because nobody seems to have any definitive answer to this problem.

It's been a few hours since it burned out.

i had a similar problem with a ps1 and a madcatz controller waaaay back in the day. it didn't kill my system, but it did make i so that no other controller would work other than the madcatz controller... i don't know why it did that. the guy on the phone with sony said that the trird party manufacturers aren't held up to the same specs as the licensed stuff; so thngs like connector sizes will varie with the third party and in some cases and connector being too longor short might mess up some of the internal connectors or possibly short out an entire board... i think that was the case in my situation because the first player controller slot would work with that one controller, but neither the second player controller slot, nor any of the memry card slots worked after that. i have no experience with this on the n64 though. i don't imagine that it would be impossible.
