Was anyone actually persuaded by the horrible commercials to buy the game?

First it was UR MOM thing...which is the worst most insulting attempt at game sales. Then you have the wild west thing which just looks stupid. Bad marketing, or genius?

Should anyone here ever be persuaded to buy a game from a commercial?

The commercials were cheesy, agreed. Then again, Alan Wake was very marketed (even Walmart had it right in front of their stores when you walk in) and did not sell large volumes. I never buy games based on their marketing campaigns, but Dead Space 2 was kind of lame to be honest.

Well, i guess not anyone here, but the more casual audience that doesn't browse gaming sites is to be attracted by commercials alone.

It seems like they are trying to sell an M reated game to 12 year olds.

Very true. The sad thing is, all the over-the-top gore in Dead Space seems to be there to appeal to 12-year olds in the first place.

Most TV commercials are absolutely awful. I can't believe that the whole marketing industry even exists any more - most commercials make me NOT want to buy the product.

I pre-ordered DS2 long before I'd seen any TV commercials for it anyway. Lousy marketing doesn't affect the game at all.

I thought the ad with the Moms was quite funny myself. I usually always have my mind made up on a game before I see ads for them so it's very rare, if ever, that an ad gets me to buy a game.

I bought Final Fantasy partially due to it being the first video game commercial ever on TV in my country. Never regretted it. Other than that, no. We're all big boys and I'm sure the reviews will speak for themselves. If the game sells a few more copies due to ads, then I'm sure that's just gravy.

I think the marketers who marketed Dead Space 2 thought that it would be funny, but it wasn't. A funny game ad would be one where they utilize the game itself and just add voices (machinima, obviously) so that people at least get a good look at the game itself, rather than old ladies. I noticed they have done this for several games in the past (Halo:ODST, Mass Effect 2, there are more) and I got a nice little laugh.

Personally, I don't buy games until I've thoroughly researched them, because I'm not going to spend 6 hours worth of hard work on a crap game. I'm sure the casual audience may be swayed by simple tv ads, but I think most people here won't be.

Marketing to the general public is easy, marketing to hardcore/serious gamers is much harder.

I didn't mind, I loved the first Dead Space, and Extraction, was going to get it anyways. And being how I grew up when games like Mortal Kombat and Night Trap made mothers angry with video games, and games like Doom were blamed for Columbine, games that by today's standards are so tame, this advertisement strikes a humorous tone with older gamers which if you're old enough to buy Dead Space 2 you might remember those reactionary times of the 90s, I mean MK1 fatalities made mothers ill, if they'd of seen Dead Space 15 years ago their heads would explode.

The "Your mom is going to hate Dead Space 2" tagline is in effect marketing the game to kids, because it sends the message to them that the game is so violent, they're parents will hate it so much that they don't want them to have it. We all know this only makes children want what they can't have more.

Yeah, and it directly undermines the ESRB rating. It basically encourages kids to pester their parents into getting it for them anyway, which as anyone who works or shops frequently at a Gamestop can tell you, is not hard at all for most kids to do.

There's nothing wrong with advertising for an M rated game being aimed at kids. Most of us see R rated movies and play M rated games long before the age of eighteen and most of us don't grow up to become serial killers or what have you (I didn't watch horror movies until I was in my early teens, but I have been watching action movies for as far back as I can remember). Kids can ask their parents and if their parent's don't think their kids could handle the content or just plain old dislike it, they can say no.

Well ask yourself this, did you find the "Your Mom won't like this game" memorable? If so then their advertisment was a success

I agree, they weren't funny and only played into the stereotypes about games only being about mindless violence.

If they suck or not isn't relevant, it's to bring the product out so you remember it when you think of the commercial. In this case you'd think " That Dead Space 2 advertisment, you know the "your mom will hate this" was just aweful" The fact that you at that moment through or even said Dead Space 2 means they've brought the product out to you so you remember it.

The Mom commercials.... I facepalm every time... and that's quite a few times a day, since I work at GS and the commercial for it plays pretty much every 10 minutes. :/ Really, it's embarassingly obvious that they were targeting audiences 17 and younger, which is odd since it's rated M. Of course, the rating doesn't keep anyone under the age of 17 from getting the game, but it's just surprising that they'd so openly and obviously target that age group. I mean, no adult is going to care what their mom thinks.... I'd hope...

The only complaint I have about Dead Space 2's marketing is the stupid Dead Space Ignition. Next time, Visceral and EA need to do webisodes (live action or full animation, not the stupid partial comic animation of Ignition), a la Alan Wake.

Indeed, I found it memorable. That's the point of advertising, isn't it? To get your attention.

I think it was brilliant in concept; not so brilliantly executed, though.

There's nothing wrong nor suprising with a M-rated game targetting younger-than-18 people. If the COD and Halo MPs have showed something, is that a huge amount of minors play M-rated games. And those games are actually minor examples, it has always been that way.

Secondly, it not only does that. Plenty of older gamers like me had to deal with our mom's (and other people's) concerns about violent videogames when we were younger. Making fun of that is a terrific idea for a commercial.

Besides, the slogan "Your Mom won't like this game" is catchy.

The bad part is that the commercials themselves weren't acted very well.

Anyways, it was at least something new.

Some of you guys are trying to act like you're a saint or something. I was playing Mortal Kombat 2 when I was 8 years old. It's just a video game. So what if they're aiming it directly a kids or not. Video games are for kids and adults. The advertising doesn't bother me. You don't have to pay any attention to it if you don't want to.

I thought it was awful, who cares if my mom doesn't like this game. Were not 12 so stop treating gamers like they are. This is the type of stuff that makes people look down apond gaming. Like I heard in the Weeken Confirmed podcast, the game industry needs to grow up and stop being juvenile.

Almost all video game advertising (for games that arent comedic anyway) sucks. They just dont know how to do it. I think video games get more sales by word of mouth and good reviews anyway.
