Was anyone actually persuaded by the horrible commercials to buy the game?
First it was UR MOM thing...which is the worst most insulting attempt at game sales. Then you have the wild west thing which just looks stupid. Bad marketing, or genius?

The commercials were cheesy, agreed. Then again, Alan Wake was very marketed (even Walmart had it right in front of their stores when you walk in) and did not sell large volumes. I never buy games based on their marketing campaigns, but Dead Space 2 was kind of lame to be honest.
Well, i guess not anyone here, but the more casual audience that doesn't browse gaming sites is to be attracted by commercials alone.Should anyone here ever be persuaded to buy a game from a commercial?

Most TV commercials are absolutely awful. I can't believe that the whole marketing industry even exists any more - most commercials make me NOT want to buy the product.
I pre-ordered DS2 long before I'd seen any TV commercials for it anyway. Lousy marketing doesn't affect the game at all.
The advertising on Gamespot, oh my god! Is no one tired of seeing wrinkled old ladies making stupid faces?
Uh no, I haven't seen that. I use FireFox and adblock plus. :DThe advertising on Gamespot, oh my god! Is no one tired of seeing wrinkled old ladies making stupid faces?

I bought Final Fantasy partially due to it being the first video game commercial ever on TV in my country. Never regretted it. Other than that, no. We're all big boys and I'm sure the reviews will speak for themselves. If the game sells a few more copies due to ads, then I'm sure that's just gravy.Should anyone here ever be persuaded to buy a game from a commercial?

I think the marketers who marketed Dead Space 2 thought that it would be funny, but it wasn't. A funny game ad would be one where they utilize the game itself and just add voices (machinima, obviously) so that people at least get a good look at the game itself, rather than old ladies. I noticed they have done this for several games in the past (Halo:ODST, Mass Effect 2, there are more) and I got a nice little laugh.
Personally, I don't buy games until I've thoroughly researched them, because I'm not going to spend 6 hours worth of hard work on a crap game. I'm sure the casual audience may be swayed by simple tv ads, but I think most people here won't be.
Marketing to the general public is easy, marketing to hardcore/serious gamers is much harder.
The "Your mom is going to hate Dead Space 2" tagline is in effect marketing the game to kids, because it sends the message to them that the game is so violent, they're parents will hate it so much that they don't want them to have it. We all know this only makes children want what they can't have more. JustPlainLucasYeah, and it directly undermines the ESRB rating. It basically encourages kids to pester their parents into getting it for them anyway, which as anyone who works or shops frequently at a Gamestop can tell you, is not hard at all for most kids to do.

There's nothing wrong with advertising for an M rated game being aimed at kids. Most of us see R rated movies and play M rated games long before the age of eighteen and most of us don't grow up to become serial killers or what have you (I didn't watch horror movies until I was in my early teens, but I have been watching action movies for as far back as I can remember). Kids can ask their parents and if their parent's don't think their kids could handle the content or just plain old dislike it, they can say no.
I agree, they weren't funny and only played into the stereotypes about games only being about mindless violence.
I agree completely. Those Mom commercials were possibly the worst I've seen. They were just plain boring.

[QUOTE="Treflis"]Well ask yourself this, did you find the "Your Mom won't like this game" memorable? If so then their advertisment was a successJustPlainLucasIf I made commercials, I wouldn't want people remembering them because they suck...
Indeed, I found it memorable. That's the point of advertising, isn't it? To get your attention.
I think it was brilliant in concept; not so brilliantly executed, though.
There's nothing wrong nor suprising with a M-rated game targetting younger-than-18 people. If the COD and Halo MPs have showed something, is that a huge amount of minors play M-rated games. And those games are actually minor examples, it has always been that way.
Secondly, it not only does that. Plenty of older gamers like me had to deal with our mom's (and other people's) concerns about violent videogames when we were younger. Making fun of that is a terrific idea for a commercial.
Besides, the slogan "Your Mom won't like this game" is catchy.
The bad part is that the commercials themselves weren't acted very well.
Anyways, it was at least something new.
I thought it was awful, who cares if my mom doesn't like this game. Were not 12 so stop treating gamers like they are. This is the type of stuff that makes people look down apond gaming. Like I heard in the Weeken Confirmed podcast, the game industry needs to grow up and stop being juvenile.

The mom commercial was a bad idea.
Wild West? The only thing bad about that is the voice of the Gamestop narrator - I mean come on, is his voice ever going to crack?:lol:
