You know what the list I made looks like to me? It looks like games went uphill, then down again.
First Generation - Pong
Second Generation - Pac Man
Third Generation - Super Mario Bros
Fourth Generation - Super Mario World
Firth Generation - Super Mario 64
Sixth Generation - Grand Theft Auto
Seventh Generation - Call of Duty

where would you say it went down? at grand theft auto?
after 3D, the majority of games seem to have followed the path of photo-realism, and realism in general. with the rise of detailed graphics came detailed gameplay and massive worlds with lots of options.
also, gamers 'grew up' (i don't know what that means though), and for some reason that meant more blood and gore, and guns. so maybe that's what you mean?
Sorry I should have made myself more clear. I was speaking in terms of "fun factor" which is of course just an opinion. I hate Pong and Call of Duty, and the think the games in the middle were awsome, and Pac-Man and GTA were "ok" games. I only listed those specific games, not because i liked them, but because that was what it seemed like everyone was playing at the time.
perhaps i should have been somewhat clearer on the title. i meant the games that defined each generation for you. those titles you liked best from each generation might well be highly critically aclaimed as well - so there doesn't have to be a clear division.
i didn't mean it to just be a favourites list either. pokemon did define the gameboy 'experience' for me, because it was such a big thing - but also i really enjoyed it at the time. i also really enjoyed mario golf for the gameboy, but it didn't have quite the same 'big effect' as pokemon red & blue (for me).
it's the kind of games like FFVII and mario 64 that tend to pop up, but it's interesting to see that people's choices for the PS2/XBOX/GC generation are wildly different.
