Do people still not like motion blur in modern video games? If so, why?

I have to admit, I was one of the people back in 2007 who didn't like motion blur in video games, but the technique has been improved, and I'd say perfected since then. In 2007, motion blur was an ugly filter applied to the entire screen during camera movements. Now, it's mainly applied to animated character models in a much more realistic fashion, It only affects limbs and objects that are in motion, instead of blurring the screen, and I personally think it looks really good when done right.

My question is, do any of you still dislike motion blur in your video games, even when it's advanced as far as it has? If so, what are your reasons for doing so?

I dislike motion blur. I always turn it off.

honestly I don't notice it when I turn my head around in real life, so I don't want it in my video games.

as of doom 2016 i still dont like it. seems completely unnecessary and doesnt really add to the visual splender of the game at all. its like lense flair...just because a developer can do something doesnt mean they should.

*swishes head around quickly*....nope. no motion blur. so why have it in a video game?

Depends on the game, and how well it's added. Only game that I've found it natural for in recent memory is Resident Evil 7. I disliked it in D00M (2016) for example, despite some thinking D00M did it right.

I don't mind it if its subtle, but it's also one of the most egregiously performance ruining features. Between me only tolerating it, and getting a big FPS bump from turning it off, it's always the first thing I turn off.

What? Ahaha. Just because you are so used to it doesn't mean it isn't there. It totally is.

Other than for the cult of immersion, I can not think of of any good reason to have it in the game. I still do not understand why. It does not mimic human sight and can make the game worse off.

Yeah I think I rank it up there with film grain as "top pointless additions to visual effects in games"

Going through Mass Effect 1 right now, tried film grain and motion blur for the hell of it after reading this...NOPE! OFF!

I really hate motion blur, its a stupid effect, it makes the game look worse.

There is natural blur to movement anyways when you move around quickly, adding extra blur makes no sense at all. If its in a cut scene its not really that bad to me, but for actual gameplay i can't stand it and i go to great ends to remove it if its possible.

I also like to remove depth of field, and bloom/hdr effects if used too aggressively. No Mans Sky used some god awful forced effects which thankfully you can remove with mods, the instagram colors, and ugly hud scanlines are the worst, removing them really improved the graphics.

Film grain can also be extremely annoying if you can't turn it off, its an effect usually used to hide low res textures, and it does a good job at that but if you can't turn it off its really bad. Plus its usually used to excessively. I actually used Reshade and purposely put film grain into No Mans Sky to add a bit more illusion of detail to the muddy textures and it looked great, but i used a very subtle amount.

This is the problem with developers, they put as many effects they can think of in a game and crank it to the max. Ends up looking like crap usually and worse if you can't turn them off. Less is more can be a good lesson in most situations in life, and graphic effects is one place this applies.

Besides the hit on performance, I dont like it. I find it to be kinda distracting and obstructive. A pointless effect that adds nothing. Whenever I get to play a game I see it in the options, I turn it off everytime, no chance given.

Nope. Still hate it. Ruins the quality of the picture. I especially hate it in FPSs, when I'm trying to land my reflex shots but can't see the enemies clearly because of the blurry crap. Luckily, as a PC gamer, I always have the option of turning that shit off.

Motion blur is cancer and needs to die in a fire.

Hey, just wanted to clarify by my original post. The effect that I think has been perfected in games like Batman Arkham Knight, is per-object motion blur, as seen on Harley Quinn's arms when punching Batman's back after he grabs her. I still don't like it when applied to the main camera. I just wanted to clear that up, as I feel most people here are expressing their disdain for the camera effect. I wasn't aware which one was normally referred to as "motion blur" by the majority of gamers.

I've heard people say it helps prevent headaches.

Apparently more detail is harder for your brain to deal with.... I don't know if there's anything to that theory. I usually turn it off and don't have any issues.

I didn't mind it in Crysis 3, looked cool in DOOM, don't like it in some other games. Thing is, it should always be optional and as long as that's the case, I have zero problems with it.
