Not just specific to walkthroughs really, but do you consider going online and seeing how to beat a boss, or pass a certain part of a game, or how to find an item cheating? Why or why not?

Personally I think it is. This isn't to say I haven't used a walkthrough or went online for help, but I think the second you use the internet for help, it's considered cheating. Not that cheating is a BAD thing.

Depends on the way use use them: the way I see it, if you read the walkthrough when you're really stumped or frustrated it's ok, but if you play the game step by step with a guide you may consider it cheating. I see walkthroughs on the same level as a friend giving you a tip on a game he already beat.

Not really. If your really stuck and have tried for hours then no. Now using a walkthrough for the whole game, yes.

You mean weakthroughs? :P I kid I kid. Eh they're perfectly fine when you're dead stuck or in certain games with tons of content imo.

Not if you get stuck, try again for hours on end, and only then use the walkthrough. If you use it like an instruction manual, using it step-by-step the entire game, then it is cheating of the worst kind in my opinion.

Why is it cheating to use a walkthrough for a whole game?Diablo-B

Why spend 60 dollars on a game then another 10-15 (unless it comes with like a limited edition or whatever) just to let someone else basically play it for you.

Personally i prefer to play without any use of a walk through whatsoever. If someone is stuck in a game in this era they should not be playing them. Games are much too simple now. Im sure I will get flamed for this but whatever, its how I see it. :)

True enough. And Diablo, it's cheating because, frankly, you have no skill. Walkthroughs are meant to help here and there, but to use them for the whole game means that you aren't playing it, you're just following directions.

Games are about having fun. That's the reason we play them, isn' it? If I can't go through a certain part, and I'm not having fun with the game I spent a lot of money on (games are not cheap), why would that be cheating?

Is not cheating, but would you have fun finishing a game using a walkthrough the whole time? I most certainly wouldn't.

No, the guides are there to help you save time if you get stuck on a particular part and can't figure out how to progress further into the game. Doesn't sound like cheating if it saves you some frustration

I dont find it cheating, more a help so you can keep playing the game and not get stuck.

I personally use Walkthroughs only in puzzle games if im REALLY stuck and have no idea what to do.

it depends... but I have no problem using walkthroughs, because I don't play games to "prove" anything... I play them to enjoy the experience... and I paid for theENTIRE experience... if a guide or walkthough allows me to find more interesting places and challenges I might otherwise not find, I will use them...

I kinda use them like a vacation tour guidebook... would you visit Washington DC and NOT use a tour guidebook?? is it "cheating" if you do??? if you don't, after spending a lot of money to get there, you will likelywasteLOT of time and not see everything you could have if you had a guide...

No. If you're stuck in a game and can't figure out a way of beating a boss or a level, then why continue playing the game? I see walkthroughs as ways to help those who can't get by those tough spots so they can enjoy the rest of the game.

No. Sometimes developers do a piss-poor job of hinting at how to proceed in certain parts of games and it's not up to us to spend three hours talking to random combinations of people to unlock the next area to proceed to.

Hah ok I'm going to be the only one to admit to using walkthroughs for the whole game (RPG) and instead of ranting on about what cheats are, or what constitutes as cheating, I'll just sum up why - it reduces the HOURS spend wasting away trying to figure out what comes next.

JRPGs are really bad for that sometimes, as the next story scene often won't unlock unless you talk to everyone in a town or find one well hidden individual tucked away behind a building or something and talk to them. They also do the same thing for sidequests, which are extremely easy to miss unless you're a mind-reader or have a walkthrough. Vesperia was really bad for that and FFX-2 was horrible - probably the videogaming world's most obtuse puzzle in order to unlock the real ending.

Yeah, assuming your friend says: "Yeah, I beat Darth Malak in KOTOR. He had 2000 hit points, man! I reccomend using drain life to destroy the jedi he draws power from every time you take 100 hit points away from him, severely inhibiting any healing ability. Then, just use Force Storm if you have it, or a lightsaber if you don't, to take off the remaining 1400 Hit Points. Then, make a last choice, and enjoy the game ending!". Walkthroughs go into detail that friends don't.

I love walkthroughs when I get absolutely stuck, but I don't use them from start to finish. Atleast not on the first go around. I'll generally read them through after I beat the game though, just to see all the crap that I missed. So no, I don't consider them cheating at all. Like somebody else said, I paid for the experience so I want to get the whole shooting match.

True. I'll only use one when I absolutely have to, after beating a game I'll use one to see if their are any quests I missed (if it applies).

I wouldn't really consider it cheating but it def takes away from the game. I remember when I was a kid trying to beat a game and I just couldn't do it for the life of me and then that one day comes where you just give it your all and end up beating that level or boss. That feeling isn't the same if you look up how to do whatever it is your stuck on.

hell no, some games it may not be needed, but some games, you don't get the most out of them without sometimes using a walkthrough to what all the game offers

No, definitely not. I'd rather not spend 5 hours going over the same patch of a map in a game because I'm missing out on something really obvious. Sometimes you just don't spot something, and you get stuck. That's where walkthroughs come in. Walkthroughs can also be helpful if you want to complete a game, because in certain games, finding every item there is takes about 5 years without you knowing where they are.

The only time I would consider them not cheating is when you take an extremely long break from an rpg/action rpgISH game, and it's used just to get your head back in the game.
