This might be just me and maybe I'm going out on a limb here but... I think I enjoy games more when I pay less for them. This has always happened to me, I'm super pumped for a game, pick it up on day 1, pay the $60, enjoy the game for a bit, then when I get used to it, I start thinking "I paid $60 for this?" Then I buy a game for $20, enjoy it and never think about what i paid because my expectations weren't too high to begin with. I don't know what it is, maybe i'm just cheap... or maybe I just think too many games are not worth the $60. If I can put more than 50hrs in a game I never think about what I paid.

I don't know, but I've decided to wait it out for games I'm not 100% sure will satisfy me. Let's see what you guys have to say and I'll try to build on what i'm talking about.

Yeah that is a factor of a game's quality. If I'm paying 60 bucks, I want some value for all that cash. The reason I rarely buy games when they are first released is that so many of them so short. If I pay 20 bucks for a short game, that's a much better investment than paying the full 60. It's why I almost always buy used or secondhand.

I feel the same way most of the time. Most games leave me feeling empty after paying full price for them. That's why I usually wait for price drops.

However, some games are so packed with value, that I don't mind paying full price. Hell, I bought the Oblivion GOTY Edition for $20. I would have gladly payed $70 for that big ass value pack. No joke.

Yeah last year I bought Last of Us and GTAV full price, Last of Us I didn't want to go through the story twice since I found the objectives pretty boring, and for GTAV I hated the characters and the story lol. Online for both wasn't too great for me either.

I think the good things happen to those who wait saying applies to gaming big time. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a bundle or some special edition and I'd hate myself for just getting the game or even the console when it came out. Doing good now though, managed to not buy PS4 on launch date and have no interest since there's still so many great games I haven't played last gen that are below $20.

I'm the same. Over the past several years I think I've only bought three or four games at the full $60 price tag, and I've always said the same thing as you: "why did I pay $60 for this?". Those games were: Infamous 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Tales of Xillia, Xenoblade and Starhawk. Every other game I've bought over that time has been at a discount or used, or handheld games.

Gamefly has helped me tremendously over the years. I can almost always get games sent to me on release, and these are brand new copies that I can buy for at least ten bucks off the original price. It really adds up after a while.

Im the same way. I spent 10 bucks on fallout 3 and it gave me almost 100 hours of gameplay. But obviously spending 10-20 on a game as opposed to 60, your expectations are lower before playing the game so its much easier to be satisfied. When I have played 60 for a game in the past, I EXPECT it to be great.

No, the amount I pay for a game doesn't factor into my enjoyment of it. I rarely pay full price, though.

The only time I buy a game at 'full price' is when it is a gift for someone else, or if it is a game that I know I will play for dozens of hours (like an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game). I do like to get 'value for my money', and I have to be honest, a game where the campaign is designed to only last around 5 hours just doesn't seem like good value to me, no matter how high the quality of the production.

I am also consciously delaying some purchases now because of DLC. I would rather wait to purchase a 'complete' game, than buy it in dribs and drabs, and I kicked myself for getting Skyrim straight away. As more and more games are designed with DLC in mind, that means I will be delaying more and more purchases in the future. Borderlands 2 stands out as one of the worst implementations of DLC I've seen in a while, because their GOTY version didn't even include all of the DLC. It's all getting a bit ridiculous, imo.

Not very many games are worth 60$ to me. Almost none. If every game was 19.99$, I would buy everything and love everything. $60 is just a lot and I find it hard to justify that price.

I think I paid full price for two games in 2013. Tomb Raider and The Last of Us. Everything else was pre-owned, or reduced. I think handheld games have a good price point of 30-39.99$. Thats a fair price.

I think there's maybe 5 games this year that I'll be buying at full price, I usually only give in for the release price if it's a game I've really been looking forward to. Can't afford to buy heaps of games at that price tag each year! That said personally I enjoy a good game regardless of the price tag associated with it, even though a big fat discount is always nice ^^

If you do your research, it shouldn't really be a problem. I've got a 3 dollar an hour rule myself. If I play a game for 15 hours, I'd be satisfied paying $45 for it. Anything over 20 hours plus is worthy of a full price $60-70 price tag (all of these are in Australian dollars).

Paid $54 for A Link Between Worlds recently, and just yesterday paid $58 for Bravely Default. Played (and still playing) ALBW for close to 20 hours. Bravely Default is supposedly 60 hours plus. They both fit the rule, but I vetted each game for a number at least a week before deciding.

It's important first to see if the game is something that you'd like to play. Have you enjoyed previous games in the series? What genre is it and are there games which you like that fit into that mould? Are gameplay videos enjoyable? What are the reviews like? What are the opinions of people who are still playing it 4 weeks later when the initial hype has died down? All that sort of stuff.

That's why I rarely buy games on day 1. Once the storm blows over, is this game still worth buying? Or is it something that can be put off for a price reduction or Steam sale?

I'm a lucky one. A few years ago I funded a friend's dream of opening a games store and he pays me back by giving me free copies of the games I want so all my games are "free", but I think it's not just about the money but about expectations...normally the most satisfying games for me are the ones he sends me and I wasn't expecting. On the other hand, the ones I spend months waiting for, normally disappoint me after a few hours...

If I'm paying top dollar for a game I expect it to be great.

I don't think that people enjoy more games because they paid less for them. The thing is, if you consider 60€ a lot of money to spend in a hobby, and the game isn't that good, you regret it. Paying 10/20€ hurts a lot less.

@j0rd14: Very true. But this also raises the question if games should be priced based on their length... although that's highly subjective because one person may do only one walkthrough and another may do 10 or more...

@royalclown_1: yes, the length and the "quality" of a game is completely subjective so I don't think price can be based on those. Now they are priced by "the newest, the highest" like almost everything else

Cost doesn't affect how much I will enjoy a game but generally I very rarely buy games on full price. Exceptions are franchises I'm a fan of like Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect and the occasional game that just vastly stirs my interest(like Dishonored). In all other cases, I just wait for a price drop - steam does a great job with that. I've bought games like Sleeping Dogs, Witcher 2, Fallout 3, Batman Arkham City for about 5 euros each.

im a lot more forgiving if i pay less for a game. Many 60+ dollar games i've really been pissed off at with how short they were or just how basic they were. Last game i got i felt that was Dishonered, i didnt enjoy anything in this game but if i had paid way less the sting wouldnt be so bad.

I feel the same. Only games i buy full price are the blockbuster AAA games with a robus online full of people. GTAV Call Of duty etc.

Otherwise if i were to buy a trilogy of games for $60 then i don't mind since that equals $20 a game worth 100+ hours of fun.

really depends on the game. If it's your standard run-of-the-mill title which will receive price drops and be readily available months or even years down the road, then I usually wait. An example of this is Lollipop Chainsaw. Then there's titles that I pay to play on release, and two upcoming examples of that are Dark Souls 2 and The Evil Within.

price doesn't affect my experience with the game. In fact, most japanese shmups I import are between $90 and $110 which I buy on release since they typically have small print runs and increase in price rather than decrease. most arcade boards (with single games on each board) that I buy are between $100 and $500. resale value in the genre is insane and I can easily sink in 100s of hours into each title, so I gladly pay the price tag. Just found out that Batsugun (SAT) that I bought 2 years ago increased from $70 to around $140.
