Just wondering why so many people spend 60 bucks a pop on these games when renting/gamefly is a much cheaper alternative.

Or do a lot of you use this in addition to buying games?

Just curious

No I don't gamefly, because I think it would be a waste of my money. Also, I would rather own the game than rent it.

I've been considering it. I have the 10 day free trial going currently, but I'm still looking for other options.

There are alot of games that arnt worth buying for me, I'll only play them once and then shelve them. I'd prefer only buying games that I play for a long time for the multiplayer.

Yeah, I have a two game out plan. It saves me money. I have played 92 games and I only own like 12 or 14.

I used to rent all the time back when my family still went to the local rental store. Was nice since I could play games that I otherwise wouldn't buy. I'd get a gamefly account but right now my funds are a bit dry.

it seems like a waste of money... I can imagine it would be cool for a kid though that can't afford games..

I like renting movies but I just can't bring myself to rent a game anymore.. there's just days where I don't want to play games and having rental games going unplay seems like a waste...

Well there's several reasons. First off, I'm a collector and I like to have a library populated with high quality games. Plus, I can play a game for a little while, then come back to it a few months later since I own it, whereas if I was paying a monthly rental subscription I'd feel like I'm throwing money down the toilet. For instance, I went almost a year without playing oblivion, but then I happily came back to it once they released the shivering isles expansion, plus I finished up all the guild achievements too. Also, I believe in supporting the industry. The reason my favorite developers are able to keep making games is because people buy them so that they have more money to produce more games.

Gamefly all the way! Its way better then buying every game you want to play. Like just recently Assassin's Creed fun game, but after it's done there is little reason to go back to it. You can buy from them too, if you buy used and have been a member for a while it's near the $30 dollar mark (I made that bit up but it does get a lot lower than Gamestop).

I posted this a while back. Maybe GF has changed since I was a subscriber, I don't know......but you should be aware this might be a problem if you do join:

I'm not going to pay a monthly fee to be told that a game I wish to rent has a "short wait". If I am paying for a service, they should live up to what they offer. Most of the games I wished to rent (mostly the new releases) were the same as every joe blow on the planet wanted to rent as well, and more often than not I would end up waiting a few weeks to get the game I wanted.

In the meantime, other games would be sent my way, but not the ones I truly wanted. So if I wanted to keep my name at the top of their reserve list for the newest titles, I would have to remove all the other games from my queue as to prevent them from sending me an alternate game (which would fill up how many I could have at a time) while I waited for the one I really wanted in the first place.

They should have enough inventory to supply demand, and until they do I will not resubscribe.

So it depends. If you're looking to rent older titles that you don't wish to buy, it's a great service. If you're looking to get the newest games soon after their release, you should be aware that you may have to wait a while to get them.

I never had a problem getting the games I wanted with Gamefly, but the turn-around time was just way too long for my tastes. With Netflix if I mail in a movie on Monday, I have my new movies by Thursday, Friday at the absolute latest. With Gamefly the total turn-around time was almost 2 weeks. That's just too slow for my taste.

It really is cheaper. For a fraction of the cost of buying a new game you can play any game for as long as you want. The best part of gamefly IMO is that you can try games that interest you but not enough to pay full price for. And then if you don't like it you can just send it back and try something else.

if you want the new games you just have to keep your que empty. that way you can wait a few days (ive never waited close to a week even for new releases) until someone returns it. you are expecting something unreasonable from a rental company IMO. its good to point out you might have to wait a little for a newer game for those who don't know though.

@ robio, that sucks. i guess it matters how far you live from the distro center, i get mine in usually 2 days.

*bump*

I'll be opening an account as early as New Year's Day. I still plan on buying the obvious long term must-haves like SSBB, but I figure as long as I don't keep anything so long that it defeats the cost benefit (which would be about 5-6 months if I'm only paying $20 for two games at a time), it'll definitely be worth it to try out all the games I'm not sure about, or that I'll probably beat once and never come back to. Plus, I live in CA so getting everything in a timely manner shouldn't be a problem.

Here's hoping it saves me a ridiculous bundle and relieves me of my constant, oppressive boredom.
