I think that indie games dont get as much attention as they should these days. I believe indies have a lot more personality than some big name games.

What do you guys think? Do indie games get too overshadowed by the big guys?

Indie games are getting more and more attention, even here on Gamespot. I wouldn't be surprised if indie games' popularity continue to rise. I end up playing more indie games than big games now and I bet that will start getting more common too. Pretty soon indie games will need another name. Humble Bundle going on for anyone that wants a bunch of games for any price (more than $5.50 and you get double the games)

Yeap, quite alot actually, my favourite game this gen is an indie. I find it funny how the weekly GGD "Ga3ming is just not the same", "It was better in the old days, when the industry was not a business..." threads come from those ignoring/not caring about these games.

Over the last month ive bought around 20 indie games so I think i care. I am annoyed though about some indie devs enthusiastic pricing. A great example is the soon to be released Nuclear Dawn. The price is 18 euro, which for an unknown devs multiplayer only game is way too much for it to be a success. The same thing happend with Dino D-Day released for 20 euro.

Of course. They don't get higher priority from me like with some people but the games are great for the most part.

I care enough to buy them, so yeah :P I do ^^

Granted, I only really buy the genres I like, just as the bigger companies games :P But I think half my steamlist are Indiegames.

I generally like to support things I can see greatness in :P

Not really sure what Indie means.

Does it have to be published by a company I've never heard of?

Or self-published by the devevelopers?

I'll list some games and you tell me if they're "indie" :

Outpost Kaloki X

Uplink (Introversion software)

Defcon (Introversion software)

I think introversion is "indie" but not sure, they do make awesome games of the type that I really enjoy.

I love them, and the past few years they've been able to get incredible amounts of coverage through platforms such as Steam, the highly publicized Humble Bundles, and forums and podcasts. I mean, in the past few weeks I've spent a fair amount of time with Minecraft, Terraria, Dungeons of Dredmor, Atom Zombie Smasher, and a few others. They don't offer the same experience as full games (well, Terraria might) but they're fantastic little games to play in and around regular full releases. And for the price, far more enjoyable.

No not really. I very rarely ever buy indie games I mainly prefer the big blockbuster games with high production values.

I do care about indie games and I think they're very important. In a world of "ME TOO" games and bigbudget blockbustersthese little gems shine just fine:P

I think Indie games can be pretty cool, but most of them I don't like.

I do like Torchlight, Bastion and stuff like that. But the things like Angry Birds, while cool for the first two hours, it's just not fun to play in the long run. If I pay for a game, I want to replay it at some point. Doesn't have to be immediately, but usually, I can replay a game and have just as much fun with it as the first time a year later. I can't do that with most indie games.

And I find it funny that a lot of indie games can have more replay value than most $60 half-finished, day-one-DLC games.

A few Indie games have caught my interest in the past through Xbox Live Arcade. I need to start looking at it more, to be honest. There are a few games I wouldn't mind getting on there, which I will one day :). In particular I am very interested to see what new games the Music genre has to offer :). I am sure there was a game on there that is similar to those zombie flash games, where it is a top down view (imagine the early Grand Theft Auto games), and you shoot all of the zombies away. Also a bit like Dead Nation on the PS3 if you're still a bit confused. Hmm, I will have to have a look :).

I think recently, Indie games have been covered a lot more. Steam has helped in showing people all of the games. My favourite indie games would probably have to be Jeff Vogul's RPGs. The Geneforge series especially. The graphics may not be great, but I love the story and dialouge.

Of course indie games get overshadowed by the 'big guys'. Indie developers usually have almost no budget, very small teams (1-2 people?!) and aren't exactly in the limelight for gamers. I browse the indie game market on XBL on occasion and buy an interesting game or two just to support the development and furthering of gaming's future. :D

If we're being honest, I don't care about those little indie puzzlers/platformers/action games. I do think highly of the developers, but I just don't play them. Tripwire Interactive, I believe is still considered independent, is probably my favourite dev, however.

But stuff like Braid, Trine, Plants vs Zombies-- nah. Not even worth the Steam discount prices because I know I'll never get around to playing, let alone installing, them.

I care about them alot actually i've been actually very happy so many great indie games have been coming out lately there reasonably priced, unique, extremely fun and not filled with corporate bull$#@%. and its an added bonus that i actually get to feel like my money is going to the development of future games by new worth-while indie developers

I adore indie games. Some of the best experiences I've had this generation have been from indie titles. They're truly astounding stuff. Very glad to see that they've gotten more attention.

I love indie games & care about them equally, if not more so (with some exceptions) than full retail games. Minecraft, Braid, Bastion, Dishwasher: Dead Samurai/Vampire Smile, Terraria, Jamestown, Limbo, Super Meat Boy, Machinarium are just a few of the greats I own.

i care about games that look good, whether they are indie or not. while there are plenty of excellent indie games, the "indie" title is getting too much of a positive connotation. its the same thing with music where people see "indie" and immediately think its either better or has more artistic merit. some games are great but either dont have the commercial potential to get a big release or just wouldnt work/benefit as one (in which case, these smaller publishing methods work wonderfully), but there are also plenty of times where the games are merely mediocrity on a smaller scale.

You obviously haven't played very many of them, then. There's a plethora of XBLA games that are only $1 with many hours of replay value. Decimation X3, I MAED A GAME WITH ZOMBIES, Score Rush, and Shoot1up instantly come to mind.

Time spent with indie games is slowly but surely overshadowing my time spent with non-indie games.

They may have lower production values, but they generally have bigger hearts. But in general Good Games>Bad Games. Indie or not doesnt matter.

A lot of the "big guys" had their start as small indie types. Take id for example. I still remember them with Doom in cheap boxes with the lids hand-taped with a small piece of scotch tape. I had 3 copies of Doom and none of the scotch tape on each box matched. He He. :D

I see indie games divided in two. Some games that don't need so much effort like Machinarium and Limbo (but are amazing games aswell) and then other indies that are as good as some AAA games. In my opinion Dino D-day is a very very underrated game, and Orion: Prelude looks as a game where I will spend a lot of hours. So yes, I care about indie games. I look for indies, when I want a game more casual, but sometimes independent developers surprise me with great games as good as some AAA titles.

Are you trying to >imply that Machinarium and Limbo aren't awesome, taking their low price tags into account? Of course, I could be reading into what you said the wrong way. I'd also implore you to try Hard Corps: Uprising and Bangai-O: Missile Fury.

Indie games are the best out there. Mainstream games are amazing, too. But the fact that indie game developers actually listen to their customers is always nice.
