I wonder because I keep coming back to a fighting game I play (Virtua Fighter 5: final showdown), I get a couple of streaks of wins but it seems like I am constantly losing. It's annoying and I get frustrated every now and then and I try to take a break from it. Somehow someway I keep turning it back on to go through the same thing. Anyone else play a gm they lose more than they win?

It depends on how well I can keep up with the competition. I do what you do for single player games, not so much for online.

The inconsistency of win:lose makes each win more satisfying for you. If you won too easily, it wouldn't draw you in as much. That is part of the psychology behind addiction. In the end, the house always wins with online games.

I think as long as there is some improvement by each set of games I've played online I will feel satisfied with going back in to practice some more.

It depends on how attached I am to the game. But if it pisses me to my max, I'll just rage quit it.

Depends. If I am constantly improving, no matter how slow, I feel motivated. I only give up on a fun game when I notice that I hit a wall. For example, I gave up on Starcraft very soon since I just wasn't improving. My army always grows only half as fast as the opponents and I saw no way how to change that. So I dropped it. Blazblue on the other hand I've been playing for 4 years now although I still suck at it. But I just feel how I am improving. Just last month I naturally pulled off a combo that I gave up on trying several weeks earlier. Moments like that leave me unable to stop playing.

If I am consistently doing as bad every time, then yeah, I will stop.

Ive been playing DOA5+ online, the first few matches I played online, I got destroyed, it wasnt even close. I kept practicing and getting better. Last night I played around 8 matches, I still lost all of them, In each match I won at least one round, and the ones that I lost were close.

Regarding my Battlefield 3 Stats, yes, but then again, I can play skillful, even when I'm in a team with too many idiots, sometimes even do one or two actions that hurt the other team significantly which feels satisfying enough.

Not to mention of course, sometimes when in the idiot team and the other team is a clan or all well experienced who take the game a bit more serious you can do whatever and get pwned. In those moments...I still keep on playing because I know it can only get better from that point on. If not, I'll leave the server and try my luck with another team or switch sides at the end of the round if there's space.

Well, in short, it's not so much the winning or losing that gives me the most joy out of the online experience, it's being able to pull of tricky, difficult, skillful manouvers that sometimes even turn the tide or say a big fat "No, not today" to the enemy team.

I don't game online much anymore, but back when I did I mostly played to try and win instead of caring about personal stats. And that is part of the problem with competitive online gaming for me; I prefer tactics and strategy and getting team wins, but 90% of any community cares only about getting medals and ribbons and a 'good' ktd ratio... Not to mention (most)games aren't designed to require any amount of real strategy.

So long as the game is fun - yes.

I really don't care for stats or anything in online games. And since there's no real prize at the end, I'm not highly competitive. So really the only reason I play is because I enjoy the game. And yea, I'll keep playing so long as I'm enjoying it.

yes. i usually always suck at online games at the beginning, then get good as i play more. the only exception is dark souls. it's the most rage inducing game ive ever played. usually if i play an online game long enough i get pretty decent at it. but dark souls pvp is just so fvcking irritating man but for whatever reason i keep going back to it.

hell i think i've watched more pvp videos on youtube then actually playing it in an effort to get good at the game.

It seems like all the fights I managed to win were just dumb luck on my part. I once had a two on one match and killed them both, to this day, I still cant manage to tell you how I pulled that out of my ass :P

It used to be like that for me with Halo 4. I was quite the average player in terms of k/d but my losses were higher than my wins. Playing smart with tactics and strategy are the way forward. Being able to adapt to other players play styles is also a bonus and a trait i think I'm picking up on. Now the wins are higher than losses with a positive k/d so I'm happy. K/D only matters in 1v1 game types. I doesn't belong in team games so I don't know why I've mentioned it.

Having a good K/D ratio helps your team, so I don't get the ratio bashing. IF you kill more then you die in ANY gametype your team is much more likely to win.

Sure.  I lose way more matches of BF3 than I win, but my performance of my single soldier among the 64 players in the match is more my thing than that of the entire team.  I don't focus on my K/D, but I try be useful to my fellow teammates and just be a part of the action.  Some of the best matches I've ever played are ones I lost.

sometimes with FPS's I don't feel as bad when I lose because it's a team effort. I do feel bad when individually I perform bad but fighters and sports game makes me go insane when I lose

Sure I come back, although sometimes it requires a break from said game. In DayZ for one, although my characters tend to last a fairly long time, and I'm fairly good with the game, I still die a lot. Mainly because I play solo, and that puts you at a huge disadvantage. However, since my guys tend to last a few weeks and I end up getting pretty well kitted, when I die it becomes very frustrating to start from scratch again, so I'll often take a few weeks off. This is especially true if the death is caused by the game glitching out. My last death was with a 15 or so day old character. My normal server was down for some reason, so I loaded up a different one. Well, I spawned 20 odd feet in the air and immediately fell to my death. Hence, I haven't played it in about two weeks.

It doesn't matter if I keep losing. As long as I'm enjoying the game, I'll keep playing.
