Im talking in comparison to games that ONLY have gameplay for its cutscenes. Do you like games with both or just prefer gameplay only cutscenes?

I for one like games that only have gameplay shots like The Shadow of The Colossus. That game has no CG or touched up cutscenes and I prefer it this way

I'm not opposed to CG, but prefer in-engine because it is less obtrusive. *Shrugs* CG makes sense if the designers want to show something outside the capabilties of the engine.

I don't mind as long as they advance the story.

they can be good if they are done well, but sometimes they feel like they are taking you out of the game world because of the difference in visuals.

cutscenes done with the in game graphics are more immersive.

I don't mind it, but I much prefer it doesn't get used. We're at a point where games already look really good in-game. You don't need CG anymore. I mean, I can appreciate the spectacle of it, but it just isn't necessary.

It depends on the game. If the game flows like a movie, then story-driven movie like cutscenes are a welcome addition. I'm thinking Uncharted, Enslaved, etc.

Games like Ratchet and Clank need the fully animated cutscenes for all of the physical comedy and what not.

An Artsy game like Shadow of the Colossus does well without them because it's not suppose to feel like a "game" at all. So if the gameplay felt much different than the animation, your brain would say "ok. back to the game." There no graphic user interface during play and transitions between cutscene and gameplay are more seemless.

Games that are simply just games don't really need them as much because the story and animation isn't meant to add much in the way of entertainment.

And then there's games like Fallout and other RPGs where the plot unfolds in user-guided conversations.

What's more annoying than cutscenes are long, poorly placed, unskippable cutscenes. Those shouldn't be in any game.

Look at a game like FFXIII or God of War III, the in game cut-scenes were more than good enough. God of War III as I can recalled didn't have a CG cutscene unlike the previous entries.

If they want to have a good cut scene then make it prerender. Using the game system is not good. First, some times it does not even load some models. Having scene here one person is not there and yet can still interact with the world is horrible to watch. Worse is when just their face does not load. Second, the in game scenes are always more limited than prerender. They are limited to what is reasonable to be in the game. Third, the in game cut scenes are the one that are commonly the ones that you can not skip.

I'm fine with them, I like stuff to look as good as possible. Sometimes the superior graphics bring the characters to life more and makes me feel more immersed in the game.

I remember seeing this stark difference between Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II. At first, I only enjoyed Assassin's Creed's in-game cutscenes and dialogue. Then I came to appreciate that Assassin's Creed II's cutscenes allowed for more character animation and emotion to be conveyed through facial expressions. I'd personally like to see a mix of the two. Not fully in-game but definitely not fully movie-like cutscenes.

It depends on the game. For example, Halo Wars had absolutely beautiful cutscenes that drove the story very well.

I definitely prefer pre-rendered CG cutscenes. In-engine cutscenes can look good but the pre-rendered CG ones still blow them away with how much more finely detailed they can be.

in the realm of resorting to cutscenes, out of engine scenes have a niche. for instance, theres an area in FFXII thats a sand sea and its exactly how it sounds. the sand flows and moves like water. i dont know how they would have made it look right on a ps2 engine, but SE ended up just doing a quick scene of a character reaching into the sand sea, cupping sand like water, and then watching it flow through his fingers. it was a brief explanation of the area that resonated for the whole section of the game.

still, in engine scenes stick out less overall. the transitions arent as jarring. out of engine cutscenes are like those 3D movies that are only 3d for a select few scenes. its difficult to put the player in the world with the medium calling attention to itself. admittedly, a lot of games this generation are smoothing the transition thanks to better hardware and a few will even tone down the cutscenes a bit to be less obvious.

Depends. Sometimes it's necessary. When you compare STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl to Call of Pripyat, the latter has in-game cutscenes instead of CG cutscenes, and they look pathetic. Some CG wouldn't have hurt there. On the other hand, I'm not very fond of cutscenes as they can be pacebreaking (although they're not nearly as bad as QTEs).

I actually love it when the game does not have cutscenes at all and lets everything unfold before your eyes. Cryostasis is a great example of this.

I like them, especially in games where characters matter and you have to see their full expressions the CG can really help.

In-game graphics. PERIOD. :) And the occasional CGI cutscene (like 2-3), where they see fit. Starcraft 2 did it well. But if CGI is done well like the older Final Fantasy games then I'm all eyes. :)

I personally feel that CG is important for more certain points of the storyline.

It'll be anti-climatic if a 16bit sprite pokes a 16bit sword into a 16bit villain at the "epic final conclusion" of a game. ( Then again , that's how older games were like )
If the dialogue were well-made and the sprites were well-animated , CG graphics isn't necessary at all.
But for 3D games , not having a CG video for certain scenarios can really kill the scene.
