I generally don't mind reading the Japanese subtitles for some games, but I would prefer an English dub but only if the acting is excellent or at least good.

English acting is usually bad in fantasy games or rpgs. I wont listen to them in *** though, I will only read subtitles when it comes to a movie.

I find these days, it's more the writing and translating thats worse that the voice acting or directing quality. But to be OT, I usually go with English voices and no subtitles. I find subtitles to be a lil too distracting from whats actually going on. With your eyes wandering down to the text a lot and stuff.

I can't say that I've ever played a game that had Japanese audio and English subs. Every game I've played has been in English, except for STALKER. I accidentally got a Russian version of that once. That was weird.

Anyway, I typically turn on the subtitles if given the option. I'm hard of hearing and you can't rewind in games like you can in movies. I hate missing key words, and it always seems to happen that in games and movies, everyone talks like this.

I HAVE *whisper* cancer AND I MIGHT *whisper* die AND I NEED YOU TO FIND *whisper* the cure BY *whisper* tomorrow OR I WILL *whisper* die.

Oh yeah, and every time they whisper a plane flies overhead, or an explosion goes off, or someone shoots a gun, or whatever. It's awesome!

english is not my main language, so having subtitles helps (even if they are english subtitles). I hate it when games don't have subtitles

I don't have a problem with them. I love JRPGs, so if the game has both voice tracks I'll beat the game in English first and then replay it with the Japanese voices. I actually use subtitles regardless of the spoken language. I like to be able to read the dialogue as well since you may miss something that's being said.

It takes some practice. I'm very hard of hearing and I pretty much need subtitles. After years of using them it's fairly seamless to me, but people not used to them find them very distracting.

I'm trying to get off of STs in my games. There are points where it's kinda hard to hear what someone is saying, but at the same time, I've started to read the subtitles and focus on them more than another else on the screen.

I prefer them. Same as foreign films,I prefer the voice tracks to be in the native language. Besides, even with american games I like subtitles, because depending on te game I just turn down the sound and listen to sports radio instead.

I HATE it when the games DON'T have subtitles.

Assassin's Creed was one of those games. The story sounded interesting (at least in the beginning), but I was never fully able to get into it due to unclear sound (since I always put sound quite low since I live in apartment and I play at night) and since there was lack of subtitles, I ended up missing large chunks of conversation.

NO GAMES should come out without subtitles. No subtitles = automatic point deduction from me.

Me too, I don't care for dubbing, although with a game it's not nearly as bad as a film. Actually I like having the option of subtitles on everything because I think I'm losing my hearing and I can't always tell what they're saying even if they're speaking English :)

I always prefer the original language, then i'd like english subtitles to always be an option. this goes for gaming and movies. Soul Calibur IV in english... not good. The Legend of Drunken Master in english... hilarious

If I have the option, I turn the subtitles on. It doesn't matter if the game is in English or Japanese.

I prefer subtitles. Not only is the voice acting in most games campy as hell, I find that voices can ruin someone's perception of a game.

Example: All my life I've read and pronounced most FF characters names incorrectly. I say Bahamut differently, Ramuh, Chocobo, damn near everthing. And I absolutely HATE the may those words are pronounced when voice overs are done. It kind of ruins the role-playing experience in a way (if you're used to saying something a certain way for a LONG time). I can't even play Chocobo's Dungeon on Wii because of the way they pronounce the word "Chocobo." It makes me sick.

Subbed > Dubbed any day of the week when it comes to foreign entertainment. As for English games with subtitles, I couldn't understand GTA IV's story without them!

Not really, Sometimes I take them off if they don't match with the words spoken, and often when it comes to JRPG I tend to have them speak japanese and have everything else in English. Then you have times when I have them off to live myself more into the part of the protaganist.

Since English is not my native language, I must need English subtitles for almost all the games. I really feel disappointed if a game doesnt have english subtitle.

I think most games should have a subtitle option, I find it a lot easier to follow the game in a sometimes noisy household if I have subtitles on. Can be annoying if I miss something as I can't hear it, been a few times where subtitles have told me something I have would have missed without them.

no, they are silly. they make games sound like cheesy action hollywood sequels........ which is actually an accurate description of a lot of 'games' today..... so, i guess it doesn't matter!!

silly subtitles:

F.E.A.R: 'project origin'

Kameo: 'elements of power'

and others i can't be bothered to think about.

English is not first, so I usually insist upon having english subtitles. It helps me catch up with the story. Especially when we have to keep the volume down.

Not too many games where I feel I need to listen to the Japanese language (assuming it was the first language for the game) and I don't even want to hear games like MGS in Japanese.

I just like subtitles in games regardless. Sometimes it's hard to make out what people are saying. I'm actually wondering if there is something with my ears that make it hard for to understand because it's only an issue with games.

Actually they are quite important to me. With subtitles I don't need to struggle listening to English to understand what they are talking about.

I find them to be extremely helpful, because sometimes all the jabber you hear onscreen comes across as jibberish, and I hate that.

I love subtitled games. With two young daughters I live in a pretty noisy household, so it's great to have subtitles when you have to deal with ear-shattering noise or have to keep volume down. I am playing (well, my current playthrough) Lost Odyssey with japanese voices and subtitled. Although that's because I loathe Jansen's english dub.

I sometime have to keep the volume down so subtitles are necessary for that reseason. Also I like to compare the translation if the game was not done in English.

I always turn on subtitles if there is an option for it. Sometimes, reading what the game is saying helps me take in more of the story and dialogue than just hearing it. Especially when I'm playing at night when others are asleep.

In France we get both, some have the english voices with sub-titles and other games are dubbed in french.

I would prefer if they were all in english but for some games the french voice acting and dialogue is pretty good (GeOW, Halo). For other games the dubbed version is pathetic. MGS on the PSone had horrific voice acting but konami has learned their lesson and ever since MGS2 we've had the english voices.

Voice acting has come a long way, so I prefer English dubs. Subtitles are good too, especially when you need to keep the volume down for whatever reason, or if I miss something a character says.

The only games I've played that required subtitles were 'ICO' and 'Panzer Dragoon Orta'.. if the subtitles were'nt there; I would'nt of known what was going on ! lol.. English/American titles that don't give the player the option to turn them off; I find a little annoying.. But, to be honest, subtitles are a great idea for gamers with hearing problems, why should they miss out on all the fun ?

I prefer listening to the native language rather than dubs, although if I feel the dubbing is good then I might turn off subtitles. Even if the game is in english (natively) I'd rather subtitles in some games, I oftenly find that the audio is sometimes too low on cutscenes and too high during gameplay.

i always turn subtitles on because alot of games can be hard to hear whats bein said due to music/soundeffects durin the cutscene and what not, and no i would never play a game that had japanese voice and english subs, i cant do that crap its to hard tryin to read somethin when its bein spoken at the exact same time in another language that i understand none of
