I mainly stick with first person shooters. It's been a while since I played anything else. Do you stick with one genre or do you play all of them?
I play most all of them, some more then others mind you. My favourites though are:
- Fighting games
- Action/Adventure
- RPGs
- Third Person Shooters
- First Person Shooters
My main genre is JRPG for sure
But I do play action games like God Of War, Shadow Of the Colossus, The Last Gardian
I do play platformer like Mario, Tearaway and Little Big Planet
Racing is more complex ... I enjoy Mario Kart and sometimes Burn Out but it is pretty much it
In fighting genre I play Mortal Kombat and Naruto Shippuden ( if we can call it a fighting game )but back in the SNES days I played all of them
Shooter ... not that much, I have a hard time enjoying those but I played Killzone 2 and 3, Unreal Tournamen 3, Borderlands Serie and a little bit of DOOM 2016 ( I'm not enjoying that one that much ) I also did play Bioshock 1 and 3 but it was really meh to me.
I don't play sport game at all and avoid openworld as much as I can, otherwise yeah I play a wide variety of stuff I think.

I play Games not Genres. So what ever interest me i will pick up, FPS, RTS, Strategy, ect. ect.....
So i play anything
This is kinda funny, as it depends on the console for me.
On PS4 and 360 I only play racers, sandboxes and open world RPGs.
On PS2 and other old consoles, I play anything I can get my hands on, from ace combat to golf.
I play pretty much every genre except RTS. My favorites are old school platformers, JRPG, survival horror, and racing (sim or kart IDGAF).
Some genres like JRPG and MOBA are filled with trash, and others like RTS and MMORPG are only good for a select few games (StarCraft and GW2 respectively). Beyond that, there's no telling what I'll enjoy.
One of my most played genres is Musou (Senran Kagura, Sengoku Basara, Dynasty Warriors)
I also play a lot of Action RPG (Tales of, Witcher, FF15, etc).
I hardly play any Shooters, with only of my favourites are Tomb Raider and little Uncharted (and that's mostly because of they are action adventure like AC, also being one of my favourites)
But yeah, just give me a Musou/ Action RPG and I'll be pleased.
I play all genres, or I try to. Problem is I game exclusively on PC, so a lot of Japanese games (specifically JRPGs) are not available, and a few genres don't do too well (sports, fighting) on PC imo. I'm tempted on occasion to get a Playstation but...no.
The one genre I haven't actually tried, despite it's popularity, is the MOBA genre. Although I'd called that more of a subgenre, it's still a strategy game, right?
I just got done with a marathon 2-hour session (that's a long time for me these days...) of Stonehearth, a really great indie town-builder in early-release.
Before that I was revisiting Kingdoms of Amalur, a criminally unsuccessful action-RPG from infamous 38 Studios. It's like an offline MMORPG, action-RPG lite...kind of fun. A nice alternative to the Fable series.
And for the most part I generally play about an hour or two of Battlefield 1 each day, a shooter.
So yeah...I dabble :P
@narlymech:
I cycle through these,
First person shooters, adventure, rpg, jrpg, racing, simulation, fighting.
I'm really big on fighting games like Mortal Kombat Deception, RPG games such as Xenoblade, and FPS games such as 007: Nightfire. Other likes include WWE wrestling games such as Day of Reckoning (still one of the greatest wrestling games for my money)
It would be easier to name the kinds of games I don't play. Some genres I rarely play like First Person Shooters as well as Rhythm games, Puzzle games, MMOs, and racing.
But the games I never play and try to avoid-
Sport Simulators, Life Sims, Story-QTE games, and walking games
