Just curious how many people rent games and how many just straight up buy them. Also if you rent, do you eventually buy the game if you liked it?

I belong to an on-line rental shop. With myself, my wife and our 4 kids all wanting games it makes sense to rent some titles first. If we rent something good it goes on the appropriate birthday/xmas/random present list.
Some titles are no brainers though and we buy without renting (Prof Layton for my wife, GT for me, Halo 3 ODST and Borderlands for the kids)
I always buy. I like watching my game collection grow. Renting is cheaper, but after you must return the game you are left with nothing to show for the $8-10 dollars you just paid for a rental, and if you weren't done with the game you're only other option is spend another $8-10 to rent again.
depends on the game. for example i always rent the Smackdown VS Raw games because you can play through their story modes pretty quickly and i'm the only guy who actually likes SVR lol.
If they have a great mutiplayer then ill buy it (COD4, Uncharted 2)
games that i know i'll only play through once like assassin's creed ill rent.
im probably gunna buy Assassin's Creed II though.
I used to rent back in the SNES days.
But with games being as large as they are now and with all the achievments, its a waste of money to rent. Alot of you say you rent to see if you'll like it, but with all the free demo's that are usually out and videos of people playing it on youtube, all you have to do is research it to see if you like it.
I always buy games I KNOW I will love. And I KNOW I'll love them because I research
I'm mostly a collector too, but this generation there has been quite a few stinkers that I'm glad I didn't get stuck paying full price for thanks to renting first. Mail rental services are so much better than old Blockbuster type in-store policies and you can keep them as long as you like for a flat monthly fee.I always buy. I bet I've saved over a grand this gen using services like that.
I buy used on half.com then sell on half.com.....I can keep the game for a couple of months and I'll only lose a few dollars.....at most $10 if its a newer game

I was about to type the same thing, only I use amz instead of hlf. My reasoning is that it takes me forever to beat games, so I could never complete one in the rental time period. Using mail services makes more sense, but I don't game often enough to use them and if I purchase a game I really like that's in great condition, I keep it. Like that other dude said, it's nice to have something to show for the money you spent..
I'd have to disagree with that. Videos of other people playing does absolutely nothing to show me if i'd like a game or not.I used to rent back in the SNES days.

And demos are a bit more useful, but they are never a good representation of the overall game

Okay, how? You see the gameplay. The graphics, the sound, the controls....its just like watching a buddy play. The only difference is the controller isnt in your hands. If what your watching looks cool and you think you would like it, buy it. If it looks stupid, dont. Its that simple.
Renting is just a waste nowadays with all the tech we have available.

Looking cool on the screen doesn't equate to the game being fun to play. Final Fantasy XII looked really ccol. So did GTA San Andreas. Neither was any fun to play, though[QUOTE="BuryMe"][QUOTE="grim0187"]I used to rent back in the SNES days.I'd have to disagree with that. I have to agree with BuryMe. Watching videos and reading about the games doesn't actually communicate how the game will be to me. It's like watching someone play golf versus actually playing. You can see what to do, but that doesn't mean you can do it or like it.PC-games are no longer for rent in Belgium. But that's alright by me, as I never rented a game in my life. I download stuff and when I like the game, I buy it. According to my finances, I either buy the game not long after its release, or I wait til it appears in the bargain-bin...

You see how the game is played. In essence, its like watching your buddy play the game. You get a sense of what it will be like. FFXII looked just like it played. I dont get where your coming from with this....the only difference is you dont have a controller in your hand. But you can tell what its going to be like by seeing it in action.
i only buy, rarely ever rent
rentals feel depressing and are dirty
the same game when rented i will not enjoy, but when bought i will enjoy
