Observation: So guys, I've noticed this for the last few years that these three giants aren't making enough quality products. Some of them are just bad, others are just good, yet others are broken or cash grabs/yearly rehashes. I haven't played anything outstanding published by these guys in recent years.
Companies and their releases:
Ubisoft
Same Assassin's Creed every year. Some turn out be good like Black Flag, others complete garbage like AC3 or broken like AC Unity. They have a history of downgrading their games and their every game uses exact same formula; Climb towers to reveal map, unlock and complete boring fetch quests in between primary objectives. Watch Dogs didn't live up to its hype. Ghost Recon Future Soldier was nowhere near as good as old games in the franchise. And it payed and looked nothing like how they showed it during initial reveal. Then you have Far Cry 4. Again,,, reskinned version of Far Cry 3. Splinter Cell is not even pure Stealth series anymore but I agree that Blacklist was step in the right direction. They have so many great IPs like World in Conflict for example but they are doing nothing about them but one thing that we get for sure is new Assassin's Creed every year. Hell even The Division has been dumbed down. It was supposed to be full fledged MMO but Ubisoft asked Massive to change their direction instead. So basically Massive could never make what they wanted to make (Google it). And I'm not impressed with new Rainbow Six.
EA
Mass Effect 3 had very bad ending and Bioware wasn't given enough time to do the new ending right. New Dragon Age games are a joke in RPG department when compared to Origins. And even games from smaller studios like Divinity Original Sin are way better RPGs than new Dragon Age games. Then you have Battlefield milking story. Battlefield 4 launched with broken netcode that took almost 1.5-2 years to be fixed. The game had same old tacked on Single Player campaign to raise its price. The next year you got BF Hardline which is a half assed game and now they just announced that new Battlefield is coming out soon. You got Sim City in 2013, which had terrible launch due to always online DRM and now they are saying that NFS will have that DRM too because reasons. EA has some of the best franchises like Command and Conquer, Wing Commander, Jade Empire and so on but why they haven't done anything? Why just cash grabs and half assed games with DRM? And what's up with upcoming half assed Battlefront?
Activision
A company that started it all in 2007 (tradition of rehashing same game every year). These guys are milking COD for ages now and all of COD games use same assets from previous games and doesn't bring anything new to the table. Due to COD's success a lot of companies started to copy the same formula and stopped taking any risks or didn't bother to bring anything new to the table for many years (slowly but surely things are changing now). The series is targeted for the lowest common denominator with no actual level design and 6 hours long campaign every year that uses same pattern and some times even same ending animations (Modern Warfare 2 and Ghosts had same copy paste ending). That's how lazy they are. They have some of the best developers like Treyarch and Raven for example but they are used by Activision to release either new COD or work on DLCs. Can't believe they are using Raven Software, a company that made Soldier of Fortune, to work on some DLCs for a mediocre franchise. Then you have Destiny, where so much money was spent on marketing and generating hype but instead you got half assed game with Redbull DLCs and campaign with shitty writing. What's about to come from this company in the future? Something innovative or ground breaking? Anything? All I can think of is new COD.
.
Question: So my question is, do you guys still get excited when these companies announce their new games? Apart from Mirror's Edge (excited but keeping my hype in check, same for Andromeda), I can't say I'm excited for any single game that is planned to be published by these guys.
I asked this question because I see countless articles of same games everywhere on gamespot while a lot of good games are often overlooked. So I wanted to know whether community is really excited for these games or not?
I think following smaller publishers or developers is worth it. Those guys are delivering more than these guys who have a lot of money and big names, yet nothing special in terms of quality,,, just rehashes and cash grabs.
