Note: Here we are only talking about Activision division. So Blizzard is not included in this discussion.

Rules:

  • Be Civil.
  • No name calling, trolling or personal insults.

.

Observation: So guys, I've noticed this for the last few years that these three giants aren't making enough quality products. Some of them are just bad, others are just good, yet others are broken or cash grabs/yearly rehashes. I haven't played anything outstanding published by these guys in recent years.

Companies and their releases:

Ubisoft

Same Assassin's Creed every year. Some turn out be good like Black Flag, others complete garbage like AC3 or broken like AC Unity. They have a history of downgrading their games and their every game uses exact same formula; Climb towers to reveal map, unlock and complete boring fetch quests in between primary objectives. Watch Dogs didn't live up to its hype. Ghost Recon Future Soldier was nowhere near as good as old games in the franchise. And it payed and looked nothing like how they showed it during initial reveal. Then you have Far Cry 4. Again,,, reskinned version of Far Cry 3. Splinter Cell is not even pure Stealth series anymore but I agree that Blacklist was step in the right direction. They have so many great IPs like World in Conflict for example but they are doing nothing about them but one thing that we get for sure is new Assassin's Creed every year. Hell even The Division has been dumbed down. It was supposed to be full fledged MMO but Ubisoft asked Massive to change their direction instead. So basically Massive could never make what they wanted to make (Google it). And I'm not impressed with new Rainbow Six.

EA

Mass Effect 3 had very bad ending and Bioware wasn't given enough time to do the new ending right. New Dragon Age games are a joke in RPG department when compared to Origins. And even games from smaller studios like Divinity Original Sin are way better RPGs than new Dragon Age games. Then you have Battlefield milking story. Battlefield 4 launched with broken netcode that took almost 1.5-2 years to be fixed. The game had same old tacked on Single Player campaign to raise its price. The next year you got BF Hardline which is a half assed game and now they just announced that new Battlefield is coming out soon. You got Sim City in 2013, which had terrible launch due to always online DRM and now they are saying that NFS will have that DRM too because reasons. EA has some of the best franchises like Command and Conquer, Wing Commander, Jade Empire and so on but why they haven't done anything? Why just cash grabs and half assed games with DRM? And what's up with upcoming half assed Battlefront?

Activision

A company that started it all in 2007 (tradition of rehashing same game every year). These guys are milking COD for ages now and all of COD games use same assets from previous games and doesn't bring anything new to the table. Due to COD's success a lot of companies started to copy the same formula and stopped taking any risks or didn't bother to bring anything new to the table for many years (slowly but surely things are changing now). The series is targeted for the lowest common denominator with no actual level design and 6 hours long campaign every year that uses same pattern and some times even same ending animations (Modern Warfare 2 and Ghosts had same copy paste ending). That's how lazy they are. They have some of the best developers like Treyarch and Raven for example but they are used by Activision to release either new COD or work on DLCs. Can't believe they are using Raven Software, a company that made Soldier of Fortune, to work on some DLCs for a mediocre franchise. Then you have Destiny, where so much money was spent on marketing and generating hype but instead you got half assed game with Redbull DLCs and campaign with shitty writing. What's about to come from this company in the future? Something innovative or ground breaking? Anything? All I can think of is new COD.

.

Question: So my question is, do you guys still get excited when these companies announce their new games? Apart from Mirror's Edge (excited but keeping my hype in check, same for Andromeda), I can't say I'm excited for any single game that is planned to be published by these guys.

I asked this question because I see countless articles of same games everywhere on gamespot while a lot of good games are often overlooked. So I wanted to know whether community is really excited for these games or not?

I think following smaller publishers or developers is worth it. Those guys are delivering more than these guys who have a lot of money and big names, yet nothing special in terms of quality,,, just rehashes and cash grabs.

Discuss.

I get hyped for any gaming company that brings fresh games to the table, just tired of the same old assassins creed, call of duty every year.

Ubisoft has always been downgrading their games since ghost recon advanced warfighter, it was no surprise watch dogs was probably not going to be what we saw at the e3 they initially announced. Their games despite not being as advertised are ultimately very enjoyable games however I think I've lost faith in their Tom Clancy games. I'd much rather patriots than some rip off counter strike. Also wildlands...wtf ubisoft?

Bioware - if mass effect andromeda is anything like dragon age inquisition well God help them... On a side note please learn from Cdprojektred. They are the new leaders in the rpg genere.

Activision? Please stop publishing crap.

Ah where to start here.

Ubisoft: It is not that I don't get hyped for Ubi games in general (some of the smaller games is an exception though). Rather it is a complete lack of interest in whatever they make. They have a formula they are sticking to, across genres. Most of the games they make have good production values, but are clunky drab, and lack any drive in them. When referring to "vanilla", Ubisoft is the game worlds answer. Pitifully boring games on average. Add to that Ubisoft is notorious for giving the middle finger to a third of the potential consumer base, and then whining that they don't buy their games? the ****? Even with their preferred platforms they are rarely able to deliver an acceptable product at this point.

EA: is an odd fish, they are both some of the best and the worst, at the same time. I am always weary about EA games, meaning that I will never be Hyped, but on the list they deserve the most. They have a long list of train wrecks, but at least they take more chances then most big Publishers, and they have given us game series that that do not fall into the typical money making genres. For that I at least pay attention when EA reveal something, because it might be worth it. EA also has pretty good support overall compared to most others, and treat any potential consumer bases quite well (if there are moeny to be had, they are a business, not a charity). For that I respect them more then average

Activision: I always wondered why people game EA so much shit, when Activision exists, it is by far my least preferred Publisher, an expert at milking and running things to the ground (yes in modern times they are even worse then EA). Acti tends to make the same kinds of games each year. While Ubi has them beat overall in reusing an idea so old it should be left alone to die, Acti started the trend, and for me, they have run everything they own to the ground. Abandoning anything that did not sell a retarded amount of copies (more niche games, or genres with less mass appeal). And then try to make the consumer base look like the bad guy when people ain't buying cardbord copy game #37 They are the champions of "scorched earth tactics in the industry". The activision of old dies over a decade ago, the activision of today is down right horrible, with pretty sucky support.

Overall I do not get hyped by any of the big 3 3rd party pubs no. My preference in general is with the mid tier ones. But out of the 3, EA has the most potential. Where as the other two seems to try to invent new ways to make the consumer base more pessimistic about them. And no matter how much money they use in ad campaigns and Hype trains, it will not make a game good. Broken games stay broken.

Yeah I still get hyped for their games.

Ubisoft: I still enjoy the Assassin Creed games even though I'm a bit behind in them and the last two Farcry games have been very good. I also really enjoyed Watch Dogs. The new Ghost Recon game looks great and The Division looks promising.

EA: I loved Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquistion so I eagerly await anything from Bioware. Star Wars Battlefront looks like it should be a fantastic game. I love their NHL franchise despite passing on last year's disappointing entry. Hopefully this year's is better.

Activision: I still very much love the Call of Duty franchise and am really looking forward to Black Ops 3. Despite the disappointing story aspect of Destiny I found it to be a really good game and I enjoyed my time with it. I'm really looking forward to how they expand on it from here.

So yeah these companies produce a decent number of games that I look forward to and enjoy.

I don't really get overly-hyped for games anymore. Of these companies, sure, they each have franchises I'm no longer interested in. But they all, except maybe Activision have potential games I would be interested in. For instance, I do hope a sequel to Watch Dogs happens because I quite enjoyed that game. And from EA, I will definitely be more excited as Mass Effect: Andromeda's release draws near. I just don't have any interest in hating gaming companies, even though each of these three have participated in some sketchy business tactics. But I think Ubisoft doesn't deserve most of the hate it gets. I've really enjoyed most of their games that I have played.

Platinum making Transformers for Activision is exciting.

I'll support Ubisoft when a new Ray-Man gets underway.

EA tends to disappoint me so I avoid them.

Honestly their the last companies that ever really get me all worked up when they announce shit. Their business models allow for all the shit I hate about this industry to be prevalent in the majority of their games, and their lack of quality has gotten worse considerably. Less risks, less creative ideas, lesser products. They've burnt me so much of late with their broken games, and policies of less for more (EX.Battlefront) that I no longer watch out for anything they announce.

Yes, except Activision's. But I don't like the route Ubisoft is taking in their games in recent years and their PC ports. And I don't like EA's Origin/fan service and expensive DLCs, some of them should've been free.

I don't care much for their anual series anymore but their other games sometimes interest me. For example, The Division, Ghost Recon Wasteland, Battlefront, and Mass Effect Andromeda are all games I am really looking forward to. I also enjoy seeing games come out from them that you wouldn't expect, like Unravel.

Depends on a game-by-game basis. But a game being under their Publishing label does make me slightly cautious as a consumer in how they'll approach pricing, monetization and service related things.

For example:

Anno 2205 - Ubisoft

Mirrors Edge: Catalyst - EA

Star Wars: Battlefront - EA

-

On another note, I quite enjoyed Dragon Age: Inquisition, even though I was not hyping or excited about the game at all. Just went and tried the game after getting it cheap and enjoyed it despite some glaring issues. Then you also have to consider their smaller efforts, which I have been impressed with: Like Grow Home and Valiant Hearts (Ubisoft), King's Quest (Activision) and Unraveled looks cool (EA).

I don´t get hyped easy so not really and never have been hyped for games by any of the Big 3.

Only thing that has me a bit hyped now is Fallout 4 but even there i am just waiting for the famous delay speech.

Quite honestly i stopped caring 3-4 years ago for almost everything those 3 do.

There are only 3 franchises i care from those. Mirrors edge ( and i hope EA dont screw this one ) , Anno ( which ubisoft almost ruined it with over abusive DRM and i do hope the new one is not using any DRM ) and Far cry series which after FC3 and Blood Dragon ubisoft gave us the mediocrity that is FC4 ( and that is not taking into account the horrible state it was released in ) so i would assume that franchise went down the drain

Activision are awful, I truly believe that they are bad for this industry and will be the driving force behind another crash. They have destroyed so many brilliant studios, and wasted/milked/ruined so many promising IP's. I don't want to list them all for fear of depressing myself. Activision are a wasteland, I don't get disappointed in them because I expect nothing from them and am not interested in what they're peddling.

I believe that the negative press surrounding Ubisoft and EA, is overblown by internet Che Guevara's looking for a first world crusade to fight for. People love to highlight all the bad stuff these two do, but keep their mouths suspiciously closed whenever either company does something good.

Last year Ubisoft dropped Grow Home, Valiant Hearts and Child of Light and nobody ever brings that up. Sure they messed up in a big way with Unity but that doesn't erase their good work. Same with EA, nobody EVER talks about how they have consistently supported EA Sports UFC with free DLC and constant balance patches and after sale support, but they'll jump on the hate bandwagon as soon as they get the chance.

Watch_Dogs was an overhyped game, that then got underrated when it released.

Activision has nothing I'm interested in, pretty much the same for Ubisoft atm.

As for EA, I was interested in the new NFS and Battlefront but they fucked the former up with their online DRM crap and the latter seems to lack content. Not sure how to feel about those games right now. I'm still looking forward to Mirror's Edge 2 though, almost forgot about that game lol.

I'm still hoping for a Battlefield 2143.

i don't really mind ea and activision, probably because i'm not that interested in much they do, but ubisoft really frustrate me. i remember how much i used to love their games circa 2006 and before. black flag aside i haven't enjoyed anything they've done for at least the past several years. the rot started with double agent and far cry 2, both trying to outdo each other to win the title of most disappointing follow-up to a classic game ever.

they have a knack of taking a great premise and then woefully underutilising its potential. and now they seem to force all their games to inherit a tediously humdrum open world template which they stuff full of filler, hoping all that content masks how generally unremarkable and lacklustre the main game really is. some of the shared content / mechanics between titles is downright shameless. after watch dogs i will never get hyped for another of their games although my natural optimism is quietly hoping the new r6 doesn't stink the place out. they're by far the most disappointing of the three companies in the op to me

I will say that I do get hype when EA announce a game that I'm interested. Like Mass Effect: Andromeda, I'm really hype for that game. I was also hype for Watch Dogs from Ubisoft but when that game came out, it didn't live to that expectations but the gameplay was still fun but nothing like they show the game at E3. EA most of the times, impress me depending on what game they show and if I like it, I get hype cause of the trailer, like the new Mass Effect and I'm a Mass Effect fan. I was really hype for Dead Space the first time I played it and it live to that hype for that game and I really enjoy Dead Space/2 but 3 suck. The only Activision game I was hype [and I fell for it big time] was Destiny. Yes Destiny has it's flaws but the gameplay and classes for each characters, I was really impress but was disappointed at the same time. I however met really good friends from playing Destiny on PS4. EA is the Co. I get hype from those guys the most and when they show Titanfall the first time, I got hype from it, played both PC/Xbox One beta versions and was letdown when I play the Beta.

Now then, the only thing I'm disappointed with Gamespot is the fact that they are not covering any news on Star Citizen at all. They keep constantly reporting Destiny's new DLC, The Taken King. While I can understand it's a fun game for the type of crowd, but I want GS to cover more then just Destiny. I'm cool with GS posting movies article but for a gaming site, I feel like GS is just isn't even trying. Sorry if this post was long.

Well, when they have good devs like Bioware (EA) or Michel Ancel (Ubi), I try. But EA won't let me for the former, that's for sure.

Activision? Well... I haven't been interested in what they were doing since probably 2010 when they released GE 2010.

I think you can be hyped about games but still remain skeptical when it comes to big publishers. Theres always the chance of games releasing broken, overpriced dlc, always onlne, and all the other stuff that gets gamers backs up. Star wars battlefront may well be released as broken as battlefield 4, who knows. But its still my most anticipated game this year. The only games I cant get exited for are the annual franchises such as COD and ass creed.

My current stance with these guys, except for a few exceptions, is to not get hyped and just see how the games are when released. I still get excited for new Bioware releases and the odd game from Ubisoft (the new Trackmania for instance).

I cant think of anything Activision has put out in a while that I've really cared about.

These publishers remind me a lot of what happened in the music industry. The people in charge are out of touch with what the fans want, and keep chucking out the same recipe for success. So we get Linkin park instead of nirvana. bland soulless crap.

I have a lot of problems with their business practices, but each company surprises me once in a while.

EA gave us Brutal Legend, Mirror's Edge, Kingdoms of Amalur, Alice: Madness Returns to name a few.

Ubisoft made Blazing Angels 2, Red Steel 2, and Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands for wii was actually good. Even Assassin's Creed was pretty impressive the first few times they made it.

Activision is my least favorite of the three, but I do want to see Tony Hawk 5 turn out well. Speaking of which, it was Tony Hawk, not CoD that started Activision's annual rehash strategy. We were just too young and innocent to notice at the time.

Nope. Michael Ancel's games from Ubisoft would be the only exception.

But, you never know what could be announced.

Hardly.

From Ubi I have Rayman Origins for Vita, Asscreed: Black Flag (PS4), Asscreed Whatever for Vita (laggy) Watchdogs (PS4), Farcry 3 (PC) and finally Farcry 4 (PS4). I haven't finished even one of them.

From Activision I have COD: AW, the campaign is mediocre, MP is pretty fun though.

From EA I have BF4 and the MP is totally awesome, can't wait for the night maps.

I thought AC Unity was awesome. Liked it better than Black flag. Got tired of returning to ship before sailing off and repeating all the nonsense that entails. Unity was flat out beautiful and I played it after the final patch so I didn't have any troubles.

But no, I don't hype for any game nowadays. Just leads to disappointment usually.

I'm interested if Ubisoft (Valiant Hearts: The Great War, Rayman), EA (Unravel, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Devs new game ), Activision( New King's Quest) otherwise no. I used to like Tom Clancy's games, Far Cry, AC, Brothers in Arms, Prince of Persia, BF, MoH, WW2 CoD etc.

@Cloud_imperium: not really, the only games i like from EA are from Bioware

Bioware wasn't same since EA acquired them. They used to be good devs. Mass Effect 1 had rpg elements while other 2 are more of sci-fi TPS than rpg. I prefer The Witcher over DA anyday. Baldur's Gate, Jade Empire..... those were the days.

I haven't been very excited for any major pub's games in a while. There are a couple but it's getting exceedingly rare, they've made it pretty easy for me to ignore them.

None. I don't like any of these companies that you listed.

Ubioft: No, think they have a very boring library. Disapointed by their recent focus on shooters/military-ish games. Before I thought of them as an artistic focused company. Now they seem very industrial (aka massproduction, iterating on specific formulas). Think they have lost their spark. The Division seems like a super boring shooter MMO. WatchDogs, FarCry, AssCreed all rely on a similar really tired open world formula. Meh.

Activision: No, never had an interest in their games.

EA: Yes, very hyped for Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect Andromeda. I also think Battlefield and FIFA are high quality franchises even though I don't play them as much any more.

Ubisoft: Cant say I have ever been hyped by their products. Pretty much anything I have gotten from them is something I got later down the line.

Activision: Likewise, I have never been interested in their products.

EA: I stopped being hyped for their products shortly after mirrors edge. Though, not at the fault of Mirror's Edge.

Edit: LIkewise I dont think I will ever get hyped for anything from NC Soft (Guild Wars 2 was my last straw), Microsoft (since they left the PC), Bethesda (I have a very strong negative confirmation bias against these guys and have had since Fallout 3) or Valve (after getting bored to tears 3 times in Portal 2)

Most of my interest lies in AA studios nowdays (Larian, Taleworlds, Nintendo, Paradox)

I still enjoy battlefield, mass effect and dragon age inquisition was surprisingly good, I don't really get hyped over EA titles because it means I'll have to suffer through using origin but those other 2 I basically try to avoid at this point.

i dissagree on ubisoft. Assasin creed blackflag was BOOOOOORING i dont see how you think that game was good it was ac3 with more boats less buildings and crap combat, maybe you like pirates too much?

Far cry 4 was a reskinned fc3 as far as assets and tech go but both the campaign and open world were designed with freeplay in mind and making chocies while fc3 was designed like a linear scripted movie. Fc4 is miles better than fc3 because it is bigger, less linear with more stuff to do and buying stuff/upgrading takes alot of time. I despite fc3, the setting was ok but it was too godamn focused on being a movie with qtes that forgot far cry is about freeplay even ubisoft admited it wasnt made with freeplay in mind but fc4 was. Fc4 is a great game as is dishonored and deus ex for the same reasons, mgs v looks like it is going the same way.

Basicly fc3 was the futurer soldier of the far cry games. Same utterly scripted missions making most of your equipment a useless.

What ubisoft needs to do is make a new ip, improve watch dogs 2, focus on rainbow six and stop making creeds games for a while.

EA has killed everything, especially the sims and nfs. The fact i was more interested in hardline due to the setting kinda shows that i dont care in bf, its the same thing over and over, i guess now they are doing star wars. Bioware deserves to go bankrupt, the only reason i would ever bother with the nex mass effect is if it will be a open world game like their last game. Essentially it will be a sci fi open world shooter.

I didnt care much about cod until cod4, cod waw was crap. MW2 was awesome and yes it has problems in mp, but it was enjoyable. Black ops was a decent take, decent story nice ideas and addons, mw3 was a cheap half arsed game and black ops 2 was pretty godamn good for singleplayer, it actually did some changes to the formula, mp was trash. Ghosts was meehhhhh but advanced warfare was decent, i guess that is because i like sci fi. Now the new one? i like the setting deus ex and all but the gameplay looks unimpressive. Still you got to admit they adding alot of conent sp will be longer with coop, there is mp and there is a coop campaign. It has more content than usual.

Honestly these days i am more interested in bethesda and square enix. There hasnt be a bethesda game in the last few years i didnt like, wolfenstein, evil within, dishonored, rage, new vegas.

So long story short mgsv, fallout 4, just cause 3, deus ex.....cant wait for cdprojekt to reveal cyberpunk.
