I see a lot of reviews that call split-screen "outdated." I also see reviews complain about a lack of online while others don't even mention a lack of split-screen. This got me wondering if it's unusual that my friends and I still play split-screen all the time. When we want to play Halo, we gather in person rather than play over Live. Also, the people I see at school like to play offline multiplayer. Maybe it's because that as a teenager, more people in my age group play games. Less adults play video games, so those who do need to play online. Any thoughts?

I very much enjoy playing multiplayer games in person. Online is fine, but nothing beats owning three of your best friends at Goldeneye, and informing them of their sucktitude face-to-face.

Yeah, we really need a return to single console multi-player.

I keep getting excited over all these games have co-op, but then its online only. Grrr. Hows a couple with only on console suposed to play games together... what about the siblings, spouses, roomates.... what about them, huh?

I couldn't agree more, the games that have released with split-screen have been the jewels of my collection when I have friends over. Gow, RSV2, COD4, and the recently released UT3 for 360 all support SS.

I will do system linking on occasion as well, but not nearly as often, as even my friends with 360s tend not to have the same games as I do. 360 to xbox link is always good for a thrill though, Star Wars Battlefront and Halo both get a lot of play at my house in that fashion.

Wow, I'm surprised so many people agree with me considering how much split-screen seems to be dying. I was considering buying Frontlines until I found out that it didn't have offline multiplayer. So I bought Call of Duty 4, but it doesn't let you play all the maps split-screen, and system link doesn't allow split-screen. I just don't understand why developers don't put it in.

Yep and I prefer it to online, especially on consoles (LAN on PC). I still much prefer playing with actual friends in the same room than random people over the internet.

Playing through Unreal Tournament 3 splitscreen with my sister. Play splitscreen with brother and/or sister on Doom, Halo 3, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, Perfect Dark Zero, and a couple of others. And playing Halo 3 against my bro and sister tends to be MUCH more enjoyable than playing randoms online. Shooters in particular should NEVER get rid of this feature, it's astonishing that it happens. Arguably the 2 top console shooters, Goldeneye and the Halo franchise, have this splitscreen feature to thank for a huge chunk of their success as far as I'm concerned.

i hardly play split anymore. one reason is the fact that less and less games are having the option as time goes on.

we need it in all games >.>

seriously your friend comes to your home and you want to play games on your new expensive generation but what ? no multiplayer on the same machine ?

you pay alot of money to have fun but you cant even have fun with it... this generation has alot of problems and this is one of them. split-screen is a MUST.

especially for racing games, like Motorstorm!!! ( i hope they dont forget it in Motorstorm 2 )

Definitely split-screen. I'm not really sold on online gaming, and theirs nothing like accidently bumping into your buddy and making his car veer off into a wall.

I pay attention to games that offer split-screen co-op or MP. Just this past Friday we had a 360 lan and needed games that offer split screen for those who don't own the system.

Absulotely. There are many people (like me) who can't play online but can play split-screen with friends. I was majorly pissed when GTA4 dropped split-screen. I still play games like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Halo 3 with my friends, though. WE NEED MORE SLIT-SCREEN GAMES!

Whenever I can, I look for games that offer offline co-op or split-screen action because it's much more fun to play with a friend that's in a room with you then some guy from across the nation.

I perfer split screen because of the social aspect. Me and my bro both have 360s but we both perfer to play in the same room. It makes you feel more connected and interactive with the people in the game even if it is only one or two people in the game. When I'm on the internet with 15 other people I still feel by myself

I know EXACTLY why developers aren't putting it in. Because split screen lets multiple people have fun with ONE copy of the game. Why let four people have fun with a $60 game disc, when you can eliminate split screen play and make those same four people buy FOUR copies of the game?

Oh yes. I like to be with friends and we like to play games with each other so I'm a big fan of split-screen. Online is great but there should always be a split-screen mode. Maybe more people are loners today and developers feel split-screen isn't necessary. I dunno.

This is an example of developers TELLING people what they want. Ask just about ANYONE, and they'll tell you that they like console split screen gaming. The reason that developers still aren't putting it in is because the people who want it are willing to put up with not having it. But I swear, console gaming seems like it's getting more and more like PC gaming every day.

Hell, I just bought the new Silent Hill today, and it took me 10 minutes before I was even able to play the ****ing thing. Before that, I had to read and sign user agreements and install freaking update software. Are you freaking kidding me? Why the hell am I having to spend minutes on end installing software before I can play it on a freaking console? And every time I hear about console game problems being fixed with a patch, it makes me want to break something. This **** is supposed to work correctly right out of the damn box. Then you have stuff like developers getting rid of split screen just to squueze more money out of gamers.

What it looks like to me is that console games seem to be getting more and more like a freaking hassle. Do you know why I don't play PC games at all anymore? Because it became too much of a hassle and I didn't feel like putting up with it. Especially when I'm spending $400 bucks for a freaking console, I expect the games to have universally loved features that have been around for 20 years.

Gamers don't like split screen gaming? Really?? I mean, I recall having lots of fun playing Tekken on a TV while my friends fought with. I had a hell of a lot of fun playing Goldeneye. I loved hanging out on the couch with my brother while racing against him in Gran Turismo. What I DON'T find fun is sitting alone in front of a screen while strangers call me a **** and a ****, and tell me to go **** my mom. I play games (or I did) because I want to have fun. And somehow, it seems like the fun is slowly getting bled out of console gaming. The fun isn't gone yet, not by a long shot, but I see some disturbing trends, and this kind of **** is gonna ruin gaming for a whole lot of people if it continues. And whether or not this kind of stuff continues depends entirely on whether gamers are willing to put up with this kind of crap.

On a side note, I just bought the new Silent Hill game today. Seemed to be getting mixed reviews. But I loved the older Silent Hill games, so honestly I was gonna buy the game anyway. So later on, I read more in depth on one of the reviews that gave it a higher score (something like 95%, I believe). Anyway, this review stated that there were very few save points in the game, and that you often have to play long stretches of the game without saving. And these dumbasses were actually PRAISING that, saying that the risk of dying and then having to replay the last hour because you were 30 seconds away from a save point "increased the tension".

**** that. **** that kind of crap. This is 2008. There is NO excuse for console games today to increase playing time by limiting save points. I'd furthermore say that we should be past the point where those kinds of save points should be gone entirely. Let me save whenever I want, damnit. The technology can damn well do that, and forcing me to replay scenarios because I can't save is ****ing CHEAP. It doesn't make the game more fun, it makes me want to smash the console when it happens, and there's no excuse for us to be subjected to that kind of crap in today's games. But you know what? It was my fault. I was gonna buy the game anyway, and that's the EXACT same mentality that causes games to sell even though gamers are getting ****ed over. As long as we put up with this kind of crap, it's only gonna get a lot worse.

But yeah...there's no split screen in a lot of games because developers are genuinely trying to **** us over. They know gamers want it, but they're not gonna do it because **** us. And they know that at least right now, even though gamers don't like the lack of split screen gaming, they know that for most people it's just a minor annoyance and is not enough to keep people from buying it.

Split-screen > on-line. Playing with friends is much more fun in person and developers are lazy when they don't offer this option. I don't buy many games unless they have a MP feature; specifically split-screen, which is why I don't buy XBL gold.

My brother and I still try to find 360 games that are split-screen, but unfortunately, they are scarce since most current-gen games focus on online multiplayer.
