It just depends on your expectations and how much you hype yourself up over certain games. I, for one, always try to curb my own expectations until I actually play a game. 2014 wasn't as bad as people say. It was just hype going overboard.

This
2014 was the year of delays, but 2015 should leave behind all the cross-gen trash and kick start this latest generation, assuming games actually make their dates. Looking forward to stuff like Bloodborne and Dying Light to start the year off, sequels like Witcher and Uncharted as the year goes on, RPGs like Pillars of Eternity and Tides of Numenara, finishing stories like Dreamfall Chapters and Game of Thrones, anticipated new IPs like No Man's Sky, and just generally ending the year on a high note with games I didn't even realize I wanted. There's a lot to look forward to right now...some may eventually slip to 2016, but hopefully it won't be as bad as this past year.
Yeah even though 2014 was pretty darn good with Dragon Age: Inquisition, Wolfenstein, Titanfall, Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Destiny, Super Smash Bros, Destiny, Forza Horizon 2, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare to name a few I think 2015 will manage to top it. Some of the games that I'm really looking forward to that I think will help make it an excellent year are:
i haven't even played any games for an entire year... but i've still been caught up with most games and i am excited for each and everyone of them i've seen. i practically jumped for joy when i heard of the new Star Fox game. this year looks much more promising then last year.
With No Man's Sky, Zelda U, Witcher 3, Splatoooooooon, Project CARS...
yeah, I'm overhyping myself for this year... then again I'm on the whole more easily impressed by games than most people here it would seem, so I think I'll be alright.
As for the comparison, well I though 2014 turned out alright honestly, just the games people expected to be amazing (Thief, Destiny, Unity, Watch_Dogs...) ended up not delivering as was promised. Still, I have a feeling 2015 is going to be much better.
I think there will be gems like any year but from what's been shown or teased outside maybe the witcher 3 or star citizen I don't have much hope. I'm sick of sequels, collecting herbs and rocks, or doing the same thing again and again with a new skin. Only game that felt like I was really playing a new experience in the last few years was the last of us. The main reason I think was the amazing writing and acting that showed a quality and vision that doesn't seem to be present in most if not almost all titles released now a days.
2014 was not a bad year for gaming at all,it was not a groundbreaking year, but it was a solid year that had tons of great games released.
The problem is people hype up all the wrong things and then try and call the whole year a failure when a handful of overhyped games that were destined to be trash, turn out to be trash.

YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAH!!! Those two titles alone have me pretty excited for 2015, but the new Xenoblade is what really takes the cake (really hoping it isn't delayed). I'll admit I'm one of many who was disappointed with 2014, largely because I was hoping to see more from the newest gen than we've really gotten at this point (although Mario Kart blew me away, not gonna lie).
2015 looks like the 2006 of gaming for my own personal tastes. Two Devil May Cry's with rumours of the 5th going to be shown at E3, two Resident Evil titles with RE:0 HD in development, Mortal Kombat X, Metal Gear Solid V, Dark Souls II remastered, Halo 5 and Scalebound. I've not had as many games to be excited about since Gears of War and Oblivion were shown at E3 2005.
2014 Was bound to be an awesome year too but it was rather disappointingly. Watch dogs, Titanfall, Destiny, Unity, Far cry 4..... They're decent games but I really hope 2015 really does live up to the hype. And it might just do that with Witcher 3 and MGS coming to PC. Mortal Kombat seems nice too.
