I wouldn't be surprised if some of the spam accounts we've banned were made for that purpose. Doubt there's any among us right now, though. They'd have to actually invest themselves in the community to avoid being caught. Seems like too much effort to justify the cost.
Probably not. A much more effective way of advertising your game is being one of the accounts that has the "game dev" tag or whatever. I believe there was one for a game called City of Steam? He released a lot of little tidbits straight from the team that gave us all quite a lot of info on their game.

They are a much more sad reality: they actually do what they do for free.After going deeply undercover in GSforums for years I can now say that 86% of the user base here is hired by companies. Only a few dozen people that post here are actual neutral gamers.
