I played through it and thought it was really good. However, if it was really the best game of last year, then it wasn't one of gaming's best years for top tier games.
Great? Yes.
Overrated? Also yes.

Overated? Nope, name a rpg thats good during the first 5-10hrs? I haven't played one yet, personally I wouldn't comment on the game until you played it more.....saying its not the best game of 2008 is your opinion, I complety disagree..but then again unlike you I played the game for 60hrs.F3 is the first sand box title I've played, when I first got the game I played it non stop for the first couple of weeks, But then, just as always I will go back to one of my other games for a while.. I'm the type of gamer that takes his time with a game, so playing F.3 'on and off' will probably keep me going for about six months.. Personally I don't see the point in rushing through a game, but that's just my opinion, your intitled to your own.. At the moment I'm maxed out and 140 hours in taking on as many side quests as possible for achievments whilst trying to discover every area before returning back to the main story to complete the game. Personally I think the game has a lot going for it, BUT the average individual can only play through something for a certain amount of time before getting bored, especially if the scenery starts to get repetative (but what game is'nt repetative ?!) .. I admit that the game can be extremely enjoyable with an impressive amount of content squeezed upon just the one disk (if only all titles has this much content upon the one disk !).. But what gets my G.O.A.T, is the fact that Bethesda Softworks have been an extremely lucrative games company for quite some time now, so why the hell don't they invest in more voice actors for their games ?! Hearing he same voices time after time after time is a joke, and a bit of an insult to gamers who have invested around £39.99 when the game was first released. (I got F.3 free with my Elite, but that's not the point !) I have'nt played Oblivion yet, but apparently there is even less voice actors in that game ! So the answer to your question is.. The game is kind of over rated, but would'nt life be boring if we all liked th same things ?
Whilst dining out in a fine restaurant, your date fails to notice that you accidentally spit a small amount of food onto her plate whilst talking, do you..
A) Admit it, and hope she see's the funny side of it
B) Say nothing, and silently cringe as she eventually gets around to eating it
C) Laugh to yourself as she eats it, thinking rather you than me
D) Explain you don't feel well, get up quickly before she'a able to takes another mouthful, regurgitate your meal onto her plate, then ask her back to your place to watch Alien.
Decades Of Gaming.
My reasons for feeling that Fallout 3 is overrated (while just my opinions mind you) are this:
1.) The color pallette. Ok, Gears of War and Uncharted and other graphical kings tend to have the grey, brown, green blue color pallette scheme. Fair enough, but generally they are not required to make you wander off into the undifferentiated wasteland where exploration is rather a chore. Also graphically, the animations are horrible.
2.) The game wants to be an RPG with a FPS, but does neither well. VATS makes the game feel like it's a true turn based RPG, but inherently you are always getting into fights, and until you get overpowered or have some uber gear or get lucky, you are going to sustain damage no matter what. Try and aim your gun like a real FPS and you get unresponsive inaccurate crap.
3.) You look at anything people treat you like a criminal even if you are an upstanding citizen. Not a real problem just extremely annoying to hear "If you touch that we will have problems" whenever you look around in a bar or store or something. That and the constant repetition of dialogue and voice overs and stuff, especially from enemies is tedious and annoying.
Now is it a horrible game? No. But is it worthy of GOTY or a 9.0+? No, not at all.
I have zero interest in buying it.
Maybe some day when it's dirt cheap.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not really Fallout. It might be a good game, but it's not Fallout.
It's just yet another FPS piece of trash with the name Fallout tacked on, or post apocalyptic Oblivion - whatever.
Didn't like it at all, but then again I didn't like Oblivion either and their really similar. The main problem I have with Fallout 3 and Oblivion is that it's a huge world but almost no point in exploring it. Finding some new items and that kind of stuff isn't enough and the world feels dead overall. Also the story is quite boring in both of them and the combat is beyond boring.
There were much better games than Fallout 3 in 08 in my opinion. Metal Gear Solid 4, Dead Space and GTAIV to name a few.
I have zero interest in buying it.
