Do you think games like Uncharted are worth $60

So I got the Uncharted collection and been having a blast playing through them. I finished UC1 in a week and that game was around 6-7 hours long. Currently on UC2 now.

The thing is with these games is that the main campaign is straight up phenomenal. All the development resources are put into giving you an incredible experience and I think everybody can agree with the trailers for UC4 that the story is going to be action-packed with a deep storyline similar to the Last Of Us which I also loved. But they all end so quick. Like 10 hours and you're done with the game.

Yes, you can play through it again but I usually find little incentive to replay a game again unless the game offers ways that can make the second play through drastically different form the first. An example would be mass effect 2. A linear story driven game, but there is great incentive to play through it again due to the choices you can make.

I find that games like tomb raider, uncharted and many others artificially increase the lifespan of their game by introducing collectibles in their game for your subsequent playthroughs. Not to mention a harder difficulty which is usually only unlocked if you beat it on the second hardest. I personally don't find collectibles a good design choice. But there are some games that do it better than others. The riddler trophies in the arkham series are surprisingly fun to collect as they require you to solve puzzles. I haven't played rise of the tomb raider but I hope the collectibles are similar to the arkham series.

Once again, I'm not advocating quantity over quality, and I personally think that Uncharted 4 will have such a great campaign that I would actually want to play it twice but I just hate that these games can be done within 20 hours if you play through twice. I think my expectation of what I get for $60 has been inflated too high due to me recently playing witcher 3, msg v, dragon age inquisition each of which took me a minimum of 50 hours to complete and the thing is I haven't even done all the side quests in them.

So do you think I have an overinflated sense of what $60 should get me or do you agree with me?

TLDR; the game can be completed in 10 hours and then you only have collectibles to look forward to

I don't think most games are worth $60 in the first place. Anyway, I can't see a game like Uncharted being extended out to being a 15-20+ hour game or however long it is you want it to be. Games that I spend much more time with just aren't the same. They're usually open world games where you spend most of your time traveling around and exploring. Uncharted is more to the point and straightforward with its action and storytelling. That said, I suppose I do tend to more so feel that I've gotten my money's worth with these open world or otherwise lengthy games, even if something like Uncharted is a more overall "quality" experience.

I honestly don't know where my train of thought is going. I think I might agree with you. But I don't think I've bought any of the Uncharted games near full price. Plus I've also played through all of them at least 2 times each. So I'd say I've gotten a lot out of the Uncharted games compared to other more linear games. Of course, that leaves all the other roughly 10 hour linear games that I've played. And if I were to look back on them I'd probably see that I either rented or bought most of them at a cheap price. So, yes, maybe I do see less value in these sort of games.

Yeah I think games like that are worth their initial retail price, usually. I've always been someone who considers the experience of playing the game more important then the time spent with it, although time spent on it does hold some value.

@BboyStatix: Uncharted is my favorite series, so yes, I think $60 for three incredible games is a steal.

You have to remember that both Uncharted 2 and 3 (and the upcoming 4) have multiplayer as well. I have played the single player portions of each game probably over a dozen times. Then you take the multiplayer into account and I was well above 200 hours in the multiplayer on both U2 and U3. Each game was easily well worth the $60 price of admission.

Everyone obviously has their own opinion, but that's mine.

Yes. If it's short, I wanna know that every moment is gonna be incredible. If it is, then my purchase was justified, like with Uncharted, The Last of Us, or even Spec Ops: The Line.

It has unlocks in the campaign, multiplayer, and likely the coop horde mode like in the other uncharteds so maybe but then again, almost no game is worth 60 bucks

It really depends on why you play. A lot of the arpgs and MMOs I play, I have over 100 hours and in some cases over 1000, but none of that time matches up to the 10 hours I spent with Life is Strange, the four or five hours I spent with Soma, etc. I love Uncharted and the new Tomb Raider - they are the Indiana Jones sequel I'm never gonna get. Games like, to pick a recent one, The Division have to have long legs to make up for the lack of substantive content. They're button pressers that I play and enjoy in between the really meaningful releases...in this case, while I wait for the games of april (R&C, U4, Quantum Break and DS3).

This is like judging a movie based on how many times you've watched it.

if a games got little replay value and only lasts 10 hrs or less i don't think its worth 60 dollars. Civ 5 is the one single player game i put the most time into, it gives a lot of value since it can be replayed and each playthrough is unique.

Yes I think so. There's a lot of effort, love, and production value in them. They aren't worth it to ME because I have a lot of gripes/things I wish were different. But I totally see the value there for someone with different tastes. I "like" them, so I buy and play them, but for me it's more of a $20 thing. But I'm sure there are lots of games I'll pay 60 for that others would much rather hold off for a price drop. In other words, I think they are "$60 worthy games" but I don't go in at that price personally :-P

I do not think that all love is equal. The love of money, for example, is something that I would say is inferior to the love of honor which is in agreement with Platonic philosophy. Similarly, the love of developing manipulative games that encourage players to spend more to profit from like slot machines is of less value games than encourage growth of social capital to grow player skill at challenging games or offer a new way to view gaming like World of Warcraft has done.

The comment that BboyStatix said about Uncharted and games like it that I think we should give particular attention to, and that is the following:

Yes, you can play through it again but I usually find little incentive to replay a game again unless the game offers ways that can make the second play through drastically different form the first. An example would be mass effect 2. A linear story driven game, but there is great incentive to play through it again due to the choices you can make.

The incentives of playing the game are important. What is the goal of playing? This reminds me of what Will Wright and Todd Howard have been saying for years: the purpose of games varies. In the past, games were mostly skill-based. In recent times, they are more about entertainment. While I have not played any mobile Uncharted, the home console Uncharted series has been no exception to the modern trend in gaming in my experience. Therefore, players should ask ourselves about whether we as individuals would like more skill based games or entertainment focused ones, and we should speak with our wallets.

@BranKetra:I think we have both in the modern gaming market. And aren't skill based games entertaining?

My main incentive of playing games is actually to "experience". Live the life of the character, interact with the characters, something movies can't do. It's sad when the story is done and you realise that when you play again it won't be the same. It'll be less immersive but I think a second play through is still pretty good.

@Ish_basic:yeah I agree but I wish these games would give better incentives to replay the game. Like for people who love achievements and collectibles, they love that stuff but once you think beyond and realise that the things you do for the achievements are boring, you realise how worthless they are. If the achievements are fun to get on the other hand, that's a totally different story.

@Telekill:See this is why multiplayer was a good decision or the game. People complain about a single player game having this mode but it's actually really really important. And the beta was fun lol.

@Archangel3371: The question is though... would you hold on to the game? Would you sell it afterwards after exploring every nook and cranny(which you would probably end up finishing in 20-30 hours).

@BboyStatix: Well I'm a collector though so I tend to keep all the games that I buy. Sometimes I'll go back and play a game again but most of the time I'll just play through a game once. That's not to say that I don't want to play through the game again it's just that there's so many games that I want to play that keep coming out that I simply don't really have the time to play through most of my games multiple times.

I think the uncharted games are easily worth the price. I liken that type of game to an action movie. Might not be so long, but it's packed with awesome stuff, and can be replayed a lot.

Nope. In fact, most games aren't worth sixty dollars to me, which is why I almost never buy games at full price. I tend to wait for them to be used/ drop in price. I can't actually remember the last time I bought a game for sixty bucks. I do tend to buy handheld games at full price though, although games like Fire Emblem tend to give you a lot of bang for your buck and they cost forty dollars as opposed to sixty.

No not at at all in my opinion. The campaign isn't too long and the campaign it gives you is extremely shallow and light. I feel the same about a game like Bioshock Infinite. These games lack quantity and quality in terms of what I'm looking for.

I personally like mechanically strong games that offer a lot of post credits content that push those mechanics to the limit. Either that or a big interesting world to explore and interact with. The above games miss all these aspects.

@Pikminmaniac: I disagree with the point you made that the campaign is shallow. Uncharted games are known to have spectacular campaigns with good pacing and an extreme attention to detail.

@BboyStatix: but these campaigns are very shallow in that the player does very little in them. It's mostly a passive, backseat driver experience.

I personally thought the pacing in Uncharted 2 was terrible. It was excessively slow and on rails, but broken up by painfully slow, slogging gun fights. Such a drag. Naughty Dog did so much better with The Last of Us

Depends on the quality.

If a game is fantastic yes, if a game is crap then no and that's no matter how long it is. I'll play an amazing 10 to 15 hour games dozens of times, I won't even finish a crap game once no matter if it's 50 or 100 hours long.

I think this all depends on what you are looking for.

If you want your game to be 50 hours of play and that is what the buyer considers worth the initial pricing then no, games like Uncharted are not worth it. However, there are other values that can be attributed to the value of the game. Maybe you love the storylines/campaigns as was mentioned. Or you played all the previous games so you place value on a new game in that series valuable to you.

This is all a matter of opinion, I think the only time you can truly say a game is not worth it is when it is generally received to be a poorly made game by most gamers/consumers. For example, the Superman game on the N64. That game has been stated by mostly everyone as one of the worst games ever made, so at the time I believe games were released for 50 dollars, if I remember correctly. So in that case it is generally conceived to not be worth 50 dollars. Although, and I hate to say it, I am sure someone would take up a sword to defend that game. I don't know who but I'm sure someone was of the opinion they enjoyed that game.

I don't think games with no replay value and extremely linear campaign should be charged 60 bucks. What's funny is that games that offer more content (and good one at the same time) and have high replay value cost less than linear games with no replay value these days. Now, I understand that a lot of these mainstream games have high budget because of celebrity voice acting, marketing cost etc but still...

I just bought UNDC yesterday for cheap off of KIJIJI.
With the prices of video games going up I find myself
waiting a few months after a games release to buy it.

Unless it's a must have game for me, I don't think games
are worth the price they are currently listed as.

Last game I bought brand new was fallout 4 and before
that it was the Witcher 3. Both games I couldn't wait for.

I prefer RPG or fighting game, few action games did it for me. Like when I bought the God Of War collection, man it was fun but each games last like 10 hours and the real challenge is in the challenge section.

Otherwise for Uncharted, for it isn't worth it as I only played the first one, finish it and hate it so much that I haven't played the others. I got The Last of Us for free with my PS4, installed it and ... still haven't finished it after almost a year. Just hate it.

I just bought MK XL and I know I will have fun with it. I also will buy Bravely Second and I know I'll have a lot of fun with it so it is worth it for me.

No. I don't think most games (none that I can think of off-hand) are worth $60. Most games I've played aren't even worth $50, which is why I love STEAM sales.

Games like Uncharted should be $100 dollars by now but most people that play games don't have a job or they would whine and cry like 5 yrs olds to destroy them, though no one would care. I would gladly pay devs like Naughty Dog, DICE, Ubi(I did with the division), Bethesda, Rockstar, Biwoare etc. a $100 for their games. Come to think of it, if you include all the DLC most of these guys offer its already at $100 so yea I'm good.

I don't view Uncharted as a "like(the others)". It is such high quality that imo it is easily worth the price. Prices drop quick these days, too. Is your favorite film worth $20-$25 at release? Are Disney restorations worth $25?

@BboyStatix: Not any more. I'm so sick of linear action games. Uncharted doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Games like Witcher 3 have proven that you can deliver epic story telling in an open world setting. Though I must say Witcher 3 would be worth $60 and then some for me. I love it that much. I've spent HUNDREDS of hours in the game. I'd quite possibly pay $120 for it to be honest and still be happy with my purchase.

Compared to some of the shit games I've wasted money on over the years I'd be happy to pay that money for such an epic game.

Having closed corridors is no longer acceptable in my opinion. Even in the new Uncharted which is MORE open in areas they are still funnelling you down a linear path. Into the same old over the top set pieces we've seen for years.

If a game comes out linear my interest in it takes an immediate dive. That and I simply don't like Uncharted that much. Think the story is kind of crap and the action is floaty garbage. Wait for a price drop if I buy it at all.

@dexda: Yeah the thing about Witcher 3 which makes it so special to me is because it is so immersive. Like even if Uncharted 4 is able to deliver an amazing storyline, these kinds of games are not able to immerse you that well into the game world. In fact the Last of Us is one of those rare games that despite being linear, ended up being extremely immersive.

I definitely agree Witcher 3 is worth more than $60 haha. In fact after playing the game I felt like I didn't pay the developers what they deserved. Anyways can't wait for Blood and Wine expansion!

I buy games at full price for the social elements of playing a game among others encountering the same fresh experiences. The whole, "did you see that?" or, "how did you kill this boss?" is part of what keeps gaming fun.

More in line with your question, unequivocally Uncharted 4 will be worth full price. Whether $60 is full value will differ between individuals, but a meaty game with fun shooting and an engaging story that the series is known for is worth it for me.

Not at all. For me to consider a game worth a $60 price tag, it must give me well, well over 100 hours of enjoyment. Fallout 4 gave me over 150. XCOM 2? 100+ and counting. Dark Souls 3 is my next full price purchase and I've spent 200+ in Dark Souls 1 and 500+ in Dark Souls 2.

@CanadianEh: Yeah and based on the footage we've seen so far, you can get very creative this time around. Seems like we can approach enemy bases in different ways, just like MGSV which is very much welcome and would make subsequent playthroughs fresh.
