Faced with too much competition from other consoles and Ipod/Android/Tablets, as well as being far behind in technology from unwillingness and increasingly inability (as time goes on), I think the next Nintendo console will be both console and portable in one. It will essentially be a Wii U without the console, that allows up to 8 portable system controllers to play at once where users can continue playing even after they're miles away from the tv set.

While Nintendo claims the unification of their portable and console development studios is for other reasons, I think it is an early sign of this. If not then the other thing we may see is the same assets being utilized in your portable and home Nintendo games so that all the games look the same.

I think Nintendo needs to focus on the systems they have out now and not worry about another new system just yet.. and for that matter not worry about making another colour for a new system. They need to get some good first, and third party titles made and released for the Wii U. They have been making some big announcements, but they are all "oh we are making this game again, oh and this one, and this one, oh yes and this one.." same games just a different system.

If I could use a gamepad to play iPad while plugged into a TV then I think that would pull the rug from under the console market.

That combined with Nintendo's current situation, it might be a realistic direction for Nintendo.

That's what I thought the successor to GameCube will be when that system started doing bad - some sort of "Game Boy Advance 2" which would unify the portable and home console into one device.

Then, the DS and Wii happened.

And I think what you're describing could already be achieved in a few years with the tech they have. (i.e. a fully portable WiiU which would also connect to the TV)

Arguably, isn't that the line they're attempting to blur in this generation with the Wii U? I'd say that assuming the trend of streaming/ downloading games taking the place of physical media continues, one could very well use the Wii U's tablet as a portable.
