I think games like Company of Heroes is the best role playing game that I have played. I hope to get 'Company of Heroes, Tales of Valor' soon. I also like the Hearts of Iron' games. I like sports games very much too, like FIFA '09, and cricket games. I hear the latest title from Codemaster named Ashes Cricket 2009is very good. I play games onlyoccasionally, and one of the best games that I own is Virtua Tennis 3.
It's the genre I like to play most, but not all the time and not exclusively. Variety is the spice of life.
Example: after playing Persona 3 for 105 hours, I was done. ButI didn't directly start with Persona 4. That feeled like an overkill. So I am now working my way through Resistance 2,withabit of SuperMetroidon the side and now and againa dash ofWorld of Goo. RPG's are a big investment timewise.
i think they're actually one of the most tired genres of games. and japanese rpgs, are in my opinion, some of the worst games out there. not in terms of production quality, but in terms of quality of experience. they're just very bland and samey.
My faverites usually are the cross genras i.e. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R.games which is a mix of FPS and debatably rpg thigns, and I also like the more americanrpgs like oblivion and fable
They are my favorite genre. They pull off a story better than most other genres do. Stuff like Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Alpha Protocol use combat mechanics from other genres so the variety of experiences you can get from RPGs is pretty broad. I can pick up a jrpg have have fun doing turnbased combat or pick up a wrpg like Fallout or Mass Effect and have in a game that plays like a shooter.
I wish when other genres add rpg elements, it'd be stuff like telling a good story and having well developed characters rather than just giving you XP for killing people.
