Do you think we'll ever see game rental kiosks, or even downloadable rentals?

I have noticed that game rental trends always seem to follow on the coattails of video rental trends. First there were video rental stores, then they started renting games too. Then there was netflix, and following that we got gamefly. Now we've got redbox; do you think we'll ever see game rental kiosks? What about downloadable rentals? You can already do this with movies, where you have a specified period of time with which to watch a movie, so why not with games? You pay to downloada game and then you have maybe 72 hours or so to play the full version? Do you think that will ever happen?

I don't think so. They'd rather have demos, so they can cherry pick the best parts of the game for you to play and make your decision based off of that.

The thing is that games require a different level of user interaction than movies, and that has an effect on its viability as a rental. The need to "try before you buy" has mostly been addressed through the release of limited demos and Live's Arcade model, which locks the game to limited areas until you make a full purchase. To publishers, they have a distinct advantage over rentals in that they can always leave something out of the demo, whereas full versions available for rental may be picked up by an aggressive speed runner, run to its completion, and then returned without the playing having to experience it again. There's also the matter of the online factor and the increased emphasis on multiplayer, both of which require a long-term presence and tend to lean players away from rentals and towards full purchases (new or used).

Good points. I tend to think that we won't see rentals as described by UT_Wrestler anytime soon.

You appear to be talking about game rentals as if they didn't already already exist. I could rent games easily from blockbuster or gamefly if I wanted, and that pretty much nullifies most of what you're saying.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist (though its existence is getting tenuous--Blockbuster is probably the only big B&M rental business remaining after Movie Gallery/Hollywood went under, and last I heard even they're teetering). I'm just saying that the publishers probably haven't and won't be encouraging the practice: especially now with alternative means of trying the game are available.

PSN is attempting something like that. I believe you can download a trial version for inFamous which is pretty much the full game but you can only play it for an hour or something before you have to buy it. I imagine they'll do it for two more games and then we'll never see it again.

They have game rental Kiosks. Not prevalent like movie ones, but they exist. I would love for them to catch on like the movie kiosks though.

If those are succesful expect to see them everywhere. Gamefly has some too, I recently seen one in Boston.

No, because developers and publishers would rather sell retail. Let the video and game rental stores and online websites like Gamefly handle the rental part.
