I created this topic because this is what exactly happened to me today. I went to the mall and met up with my friend and unbeknown to me, he bough Tenchu Z. This immediately had me try to convince him to return the game but my friend is very stubborn about this kind of thing.

I explained to him that the game was utter crap due to its lack of difficulty, depth, and story. I also gave him various ratings of the game and he immediately gave me "Why do you follow rating?" and "It's just one person's opinion." This lead us to have an argument and at this very moment, we aren't on good terms.

I personally felt like I was trying to do him a favor by telling him this. My philosophy on the matter is that a good game is a good game and a crappy game is a crappy game. Considering that the game is retailed at $59.99, I really thought he was making a mistake. I know I shouldn't butt in his decisions and his experiences but I honestly was just trying to help. $60 is a lot of money and I feel that was $60 not well spent at all.

I don't know if he played it yet because we're still kind of not speaking at the moment. Though, I can't imagine him enjoying it.

If your friend cannot understand your concern after playing that pile of crap (and apologizes), you're better off.

i playedthe demo of TenchU Z and i actually liked it lol. but different people have different tastes in games, so you should just let him be, and not tell him what games he should, and shouldn't play

Yeah my friends tend to buy crappy games without ever reading reviews. They really buy stuff based on the box art. Like when the Jet Li game came to the PS2, one of my friends bought it right away because I guess it just said "Jet Li" on the cover and it cought his eye. The game totally sucked.

I've had a few friends that'd do the same. I'm a pc gamer through-and-through so I can't (and don't) offer anything for console games but when it comes to pc FPS/RTS/MMO/Strategy, I'm normally the one they'll come to because they don't usually keep up with any reviews, ratings, etc. Some don't even bother using google to find any site! I don't mind, especially if they listen but there's a few who'd buy it anyways when I'd tell them about the demo/reviews/etc and then complain how it was a waste of time. Do it once, sure...do it repeatedly and I just tell someone "waste your time, not mine because you won't listen anyways". But I generally never try to tell someone what they should or shouldn't play, that's for sure.

He's right though!!!. A review is just someone's opinion.

Me for example, I don't like sports games much and know I would never pay more than $10 for one (wait make that $0). So if GameSpot had told me to review Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for the PS2, I probably would have given it a 6.0 or lower.

I always take GameSpot's reviews for adventure titles with little reguards, because they suck. I go to other sites to read up reviews on adventure games.

It's all about personal preference. Maybe your friend doesn't like some of the games you play?

This is sad. Everyone has their own game taste. For example I didn't like Oblivion and most of people love. Even If somebody enjoyes playing game with score 1.0 on gamespot I don't see the problem.

As long as they have fun with it, it doesn't matter if it's a bad games or not. Heck, even I buy games that I know are mediocre, just because they seem like something I would like.

I agree with him. Honestly, you shouldn't be so forceful in telling him what he should play or not play.

Nah, my friends are geeks like me and a few of em work at EB/gamestops. They got pretty good taste in video games. Some of em are anime addicts and will buy any Naruto or Gundam/mech game in exsistence, but you can't convince them that those games are bad. Their minds are just too warped.

heahaehae i dont try anymore, my friends dont listen to me much especially when i get opinionated... and they normally trade in games they get sick of

mostve my friends are casual gamers and can usually get enjoyment out of fairly average games... i used to disapprove but really just knowing about better games shouldnt detract from playable games... sortve like bad movies can be good in my opinion if not taken too seriously

No. Not many people around me play games and if anybody asks for my advice then it would time for me to tell my opinion.

When friends/family buy bad games....usually I laugh. When they want advice, they ask for it, but some times there are those weak moments when you're at a store and you see the bargain bins and you just can't resist that game that's $10 or under. Some times you get gems, most of the time you get really bad games and you realize why it was there to begin with.

You know you really shouldn't do anything about if he wants to buy it let him. It's not really your place to tell your friend (or anyone for that matter)what games to buy.

That's one thing I don't really like.People try to tell me what to buy what to like Etc.I going to buy what I like and there's nothing anyone can do about it so let me be.

If I'm with a friend and they're looking to buy a terrible game, I just say "Oh, I heard that game is baaaad". That's usualy enough, since I'm known as the local videogame nerd.

What's worse is when my friend tries to tell me some really terrible game is actually good. My one friend keeps telling me to buy the 3D Castlevania games, and I'm running out of excuses to tell him.

well in any case it wasn't worth arguing over. you should have expressed your concern and then let him get on with it, let him play it and if he hated it, you should say i told you so. what i suggest is you apologise to him and as a sign of good will put yourself through playing the game with him :D

my best friend was hell bent on buying tenchu for his psp even though i suggested not to. it's the game he hates the most in his collection but we still have a laugh about it.

I think it's crap but maybe he doesn't. Either way I don't care what my friends buy although I can't understand that one of them is considering Pirates of the Caribbean for the Wii. People hate on Gauntlet Dark Legacy and I think it is amazing so it's all subjective.

What's going through my mind when I was talking to him was this. We're both college students who happen to live in the hood, not a project but the neighborhood isn't as friendly as a suburbs if you know what I mean. We don't make a very large income due to college so we are very limited in funds when it comes to games. Plus living in the hood should tell you that we don't have much money to begin with.

In any case, seeing as how he doesn't have an unlimited amount of funds, I don't see why he would waste the money on a bad game that costs $60. He could have bought a good game that was a whole lot cheaper like Dead Rising, which is now $40, or Odin Sphere , which is also $40. He's also a huge RPG fanatic. This is why him purchasing the crap known as Tenchu Z boggles my mind.

I used to think like that, too. I used to get angry at people I knew for buying these 'crapfests'. But then, I realized something, and it was that, more often than not, they would end up liking the game. And what's wrong with that? So your friend might enjoy a terrible game, so what? These days, when people ask for my advice on games, I'll tell them whether or not I've heard it's a good game. If I played it, and I hated it, I'll tell them so. But if they choose to buy it anyway, then that's their choice, and if they like the game, that's good for them, it really is. It means that they're more easily pleased than I am, less picky, less jaded.

Besides, I've personally enjoyed a lot of games that have gotten decent/slightly mediocre review scores, and very much disliked some games that have gotten solid 9s across the board. I'm sure that a lot of people here have.

I agree completely with you. Personally, I thought Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven was crap, yet I think it scored in the eights here on GS. I happen to think that Wind Waker should have gotten a score like that instead of what I perceive to be a grossly inflated one. Metroid Prime 2 should have gotten a higher score here than it did, IMO. GTA: San Andreas has horrible graphics, but it got a very high score. Anyway, enough with my rambling.

Casual gamers (speaking of most of the PS2's userbase; neglecting for the moment whatever people say about the Wii's userbase) have much lower standards for video game quality, it seems. Right now, I have incredibly high standards, but that's only because I've gotten bored with what I have as a consequence of inadequate funds. There's nothing wrong with someone enjoying 50 Cent: Bulletproof (ick :P). It just means they aren't demanding what the majority of us self-described gamers do, with regard to quality.
