I'm 30 and i remember the 2600 as a kid before i remeber playing the nes. But even as a kid i thought it sucked and the graphics were ass (i'm serious) But when i played super mairo bros for the first time late 86 i was in love instanly. So basicly i don't collect anything pre-nes because it holds no nostalgic value to me. But are there any peeps on here that sit down and have long gaming sessions with there 2600? It's just to rustic for me.

I had the Atari 2600 Jr. (maybe clone) and all I remember is that it had many in-built games and extremely stiff controllers. The games didn't impress me either but I liked to play all games when I was a kid :D

I think Atari 2600 deserves some credit for being the first "proper" console, but it had extremely square graphics, true. It also couldn't provide nearly as complex games as Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. I think liking it today is more a matter of nostalgia.

Well, what do you expect? That game was released in 1990, and the 2600 was released in '78. That's like saying the Sega Master system could never make a game that was as complex as "Nights into Dreams" for sega saturn. Just doesn't make sense, bro.

Anyways, the 2600 revolutionized the home console business, and while the graphics may not hold up now, they were quite impressive at the time.

I started playing 2600 games about 16 years after the system came out and I still enjoy them today. It has nothing to do with nostalgia, because I was comparing my 2600 games to the likes of the Super Nintendo and Genesis (which were what I grew up with). Games like Yars' Revenge, Combat, Pitfall, and River Raid are timeless in the truest sense of the word. Great gameplay does not age.

That was my first console. I remember playing that at age 4 or 5. Could I enjoy playing it today? Maybe for 10 minutes, say cool I remember this, and turn it off.

If I could get more than static out of my VCS then I would play it. At least there are the newer TV-game systems like the Flashback/Flashback 2 and the 10-in-1 joystick available with built-in games.

If I had an Atari 2600 and a box of 40-50 games. Yep I could enjoy an all-nighter of vintage gaming memories. But I was a Colecovision fan back then. When it was Intellivsion VS Atari VS Colecovision. Insteed of Microsoft VS Sony Vs Nintendo of 2010 I am Old...

Don't forget about the Vectrex, Astrocade, Odyssey 2, Channel F, and Arcadia 2001. Lots of consoles to choose from in the second generation, which is one of the many reasons the industry crashed.

I'm 33, and to me the 2600 (jr) was my very least playable console. I had one, my parents got me one based upon that cheesy 80s Atari ad:

"Under $50 bucks!.....$50 BUCKS!!!" It was very very well advertised at Kay-Bee Toys.

The only games I really put forth some effort was space invaders, pole position, missile command, pit fall, bowling, and that horrid side scrolling propeller game where I kept crashing into the barn, I forgot the name.

Too young to have grown up with it (my first console was NES) but I do have a Plug-n-Play Atari that comes with a handful of built in games. Despite the low graphics I enjoy games like Breakout and Asteroids. I like seeing how long I can last and how high a score I can get and then try to beat it.

Its not about graphics with games like that. Just fun to see how much better you can get. Thats whyI love Bejeweled 2. Obviously Bejeweled looks really pretty but even if it were just simple shapes it would still be fun.

I think you might be playing Atari for the wrong reasons. Most games were just about high scores back in those days. Its nowadays with characters and stories that better graphics are needed to immerse you into the game.

The SG-1000 is basically the same hardware as the Colecovision, that hardware was one of the most popular for the time period with many different machines using similar set-ups.

In Japan the SG-1000 was actually released on the same day as the NES, which makes it seem a little crappy, but in reality the NES was hugely impressive for its price range at that time, only possible because Nintendo had taken a lot of chances with chip manufacturing and really staked everything on its success, with the belief that they would be so hugely successful that they would be able to recoup their investment with the money made from software.
