Reliability? I'm on my fourth PS2. All the other ones got disc read errors. In fact, the one I'm on now is the only one that has lasted me more than a year.
^ i never had that problem personally. though i have had to buy more than 1.....
first ps2 - fell from the top of the tv, i had to open it up (thus voiding the warranty) and reconnect and situate some pieces, got it running fine after about an hour of heavy drinking and screwdriver'ing
first ps2 pt 2 - ghetto ninjas broke into my apt one weekend and stole my ps2 and all my games (about 20 games)
second ps2 - ghetto ninjas broke in about a year or so later and stole my second ps2 with about 10 games (they stole my FREE laptop too, although it wasn't brand new by any means it could play non graphically intensive games and surf the internet, burn cd's and had my music software on it ala acid 4.0, fruity loops etc)
ps2 number 3 - i bought this ps2 about 2 or 3 weeks ago. i'm using it to play *edited for content*
apparently i overstepped the TOS agreement so this has been edited
You should really, and I do mean, really edit that out.^ i never had that problem personally. though i have had to buy more than 1.....

wow so many unlucky people. i used my fat ps2 for 5 years, non-stop gaming. it lived more than my cd-rom and dvd-rom even I used them less. so i got the second ps2 as slim and now using fat ps2 with hdd which is still pretty useful. i think my ps2s are reliable enough for me.
PS2 has no reliability. The disc reader has stopped working and I had to change it, however, my PSX still works. What I miss is the SNES reliability, for example. I don't know if it's because it works with cartridges, but it doesn't give problems.TheCygnus
yes thats the reason. optic media is meant to die. your cd-rom/writer, dvd-rom/writer die after a time. producers say 50000 reading is average number for these readers.so you can use it for a long time depending on your usage count

I don't know about that, sure I've had a few CD/DVD burners go bad on me after a while, but some of them are really meant to keep going. How many thousands and thousands of reading didn't my GCN do with just Super Smash Bros. Melee, that there was a game with constant access to the drive. Plus the other many other games, and yet my GCN never showed any signed of slowing down. I think in the end it has to do with the quality of the laser reader and how well adjusted its POT is.I don't know about that, sure I've had a few CD/DVD burners go bad on me after a while, but some of them are really meant to keep going. well ofcourse quality is important but those things are made like that. I used PS2 every single day for hours in 5 years until it starts to read hardly, so 50000-70000 reading count is not something few. I'm not sure how it counts exactly but thats told us by manufacturers not something we made up here in forums. i used all quality products but they fail after some time. optic media isnt for long term. for better and detailed information about optic media and drives check here
I don't think it's accurate to say newer consoles aren't as reliable as older ones. I think what you're really trying to say is that the Xbox360 is less reliable, which is obviously true.
As far as the PS3 and Wii are concerned, they are reportedly performing with around 3-5% failure rate, which is right in line with, if not better, than the average failure rate of 5% for electronic devices in general. When I think about the fact that most laptops have a failure rate of more like 15-20%, and the fact that today's consoles are more and more like PCs than ever before, I am amazed that the PS3 and Wii are performing so well.
By the way, the estimates I've seen for the 360 put it at about 15% or so, depending on who you ask. (I've heard as high as 30%, but I highly doubt it's that high.) Clearly 15% is well behind the console curve, but it's not fair to assign the 360's failures to the other "new" consoles.
Mine just recently stopped reading discs :( I do miss it quite a bit. Exeed_Orbit
bad to hear that atleast they sell at some places for 99 bucks now.but the ps2 was reliable system it could turn of in a power surge and you new it would come back on let that happen to a ps3 and it's all over.the only problem it had was not reading blu back disc.

You may want to get some renters insurance it's less than 20 bucks a month and you get thousands of dollars in coverage and your experiances have nothing to do with the reliablity of the system btw.
i've got my ps2 at launch in 2000 and it's still working perfectly fine.
well i've also had the reading disc error problem a month ago but i simply fixed it by cleaning the lens of the dvd drive:D
all of my other consoles are still working fine too (including Gamecube, PSOne, PS3, Game Boy, Dreamcast, SNES, Sega Saturn).
the only reason why i haven't purchased a 360 is its unreliabilty. I won't support a manufacturer that ships buggy hardware.
all in all i think that older systems were more reliable than today's systems.

i'm looking into it already :D thanks (the only places nearby want a ridiculous down payment cuz of the neighborhood i live in)
and actually it did have to do with the thread in the fact that out of the 3 ps2's i've had, aside from theft i've had no problems with any of them.
The Fat ps2 has loads of problems, but once the slim came out, the failure rate went WAAAAAAAAAAY down. The slim line doesnt get the disk read error that I know of. It(slim line) also has alot more reliability than any next gen console except the Wii(not counting the flying remote to the tv) and Gamecube. I dont think I ever heard of someone's gamecube breaking.
sure don't take much to break the new consoles huh. i would say that. even for the ps2 and xbox, they were fragile IMO. mines took forever t obreak but it did.
I am an owner of a 360 and it has bricked on me after a year. I miss the reliability of the older consoles. Does anyone feel the same?? My ps2 has lasted me 6 years and no problem at all!!!!Spartan-4295
