This thread will be about what games you think can compare or out due some of the Nintendo greats. Pay attention to the example below. Mario= Platformer, I think while Mario has great games, i think it's not the best in the genre, lots of people do, i think games like Sonic, Jak, Sly, Ratchet and Clank, even Banjo, Crash bandicoot, Prince of Persia, Rayman, Klona, Q*bert, and maybe a few others all give it a run for its money. Metroid= Action Adventure platformer/FP Adventure= For the Action Adventure platforming part, there's games like SOTN, Megaman ZX1, Megaman Zero 1, Rayman and a few others I would prefer over Metroid Open platforming, although Super metroi is quite good, not too many better. Kirby=Fantasy Platformer/Casual platformer/Child latformer= Other than Klona, don't really see much competition here, maybe Super Meat boy Wario= Action Puzzle platformer/puzzle party game=Can't really say anything can actually top this, At least 2D wise, as for his puzzle party games, i can think of hot Pixel and Incredible Crisis, but I would still give Wario a slight edge since most other games fail, and IC nor HOTPIXEL ever delivered those promised sequels. Zelda: Action adventure overhead/Action Adventure (3d)= For overhead games, Startropics, Rolans Curse, GTA 1 and 2, Zelda just barely get beaten, mostly because of GTA 1 and 2 and Rolans Quest in my opinion. As for 3D aventure games? Way, way way too many better than zelda, MM was good, TP was good, but even those combined with the rest of the 3D zelda games don't come close, no space to list them all. Fire Emblem=SRPG= Fire Emblem was good, very good, but when compared to FF tactics, Operation Darkness, Front Mission, Let us cling together, Arc the Lad, Romance of 3 kingdom series after IV, and my favorite, Dynasty Tactics, just no competition. Pikmin=Real time Strategy= Pikmin is a great series, and I would say pikmin would just win, but then you have to look at the big picture. There are too many great RTS games, just naming Kessen allows Pikmin to lose, yet it's still in the top 20 for me, and that's pretty good when i have played hundreds of RTS games. Pilotwings=Simulator= MS flight simulator beat the living 384983yu8u0 out this mutha. Starfox=Rails/TPS/Action Adventure= too many games beat star fox in all these categories, although Assault is in my top 30. F-Zero=Futuristic Arcade Racer=hmm, beaten just barely buy games like jet ion, Power Drome, Jet moto. I think if the next game, if there ever is one, comes out and it's really good, F-zero might take the spot. Pokemon=Jrpg=Wayyy too many, some might think it's the best, but I highly doubt the majority do, good lord, too many great games. Even if we reduced it to just casual/kid friendly. Sin and Punishment=Rail=Same as Starfox, too many great games. Dr,Mario=Puzzle= Tetris and Columns say hi. I guess that's good enough, don;t want to have too long of the post, and these are the most important areas nintendo has covered. So i guess Wario and maybe F-zero maybe, have the best in their genres. What do you think?

I don't think I consider any of the Nintendo franchises the best within the respective genres, but that's just my opinion. For platformers, 2D platformers I prefer Sonic series, and for 3D I prefer Jak and Sly Cooper series, for action adventure, I prefer the Tomb Raider series and a ton load of other series, JRPG, I have a huge list of those that go before Pokemon, and for Puzzled there's series like Super Puzzle Fighter II and Baku Baku Animals that I prefer to Dr.Mario. Not to say Nintendo franchises are bad or worse, I just, for the most part, prefer the other series in general. I think the only Nintendo franchise that I REALLY like is The Legend of Zelda, but it's still not my favourite. And Nintendo doesn't have the best franchises in fighters either, though you didn't mention fighters :P

Well yea, they're just the best :P

Some of your comparisons are strange btw. I mean, comparing Zelda to GTA? And the only thing Pilotwings and Flight Simulator have in common is that they're flight games.

And btw, Kirby isn't a kid's game. Here are the villains from it:

Villinas stop a game made for easy access for kids from being easy access? It's a great series, although those Wii games were weak, but it's aimed for kids. the theme is aimed for it as well. next you will say trix cereal isn't for kids. Being for kids doesn't make the game bad mr.Nameless123456789, so that doesn't mean you can't play it.

Well if one considers SSB a fighter, they do. Although I have mixed feelings on that, from one perspective I consider it a fighter, but from another I never think of it when talking about fighters.

Smash Bros. is a mixed thing, and brawl really just didn't help for most people. Pokemon is a rpg. Punch-Out is like an upgraded version of Wii boxing, which while not bad, would not be taking seriously as a fighting game if they presented it so.

Pokemon Stadium is a fighting game, just that it's turn-based.

It would be interesting to see a typical fighter with the Punch-Out cast, actually.

imo, the only genres that Nintendo has locked down as having the greatest games on of all time are the adventure and platform genres, thanks to many great mario and zelda games. Othere then that they are definitely top tier, but there are far better examples of RPGs, action, racing and many other genres that Nintendo has touched on over the years.

Not even close IMHO. I personally can't stand Nintendo's franchises with the exception of the Mario platformers. But even then, I still prefer tons of other platformers over Mario (2D and 3D) like Rayman, Tomba, Spyro, Jak and Daxter, etc. If I'm looking at racing, puzzles, fighters, RPGs, etc. I have literally dozens of more appealing options than any of Nintendo's 1st party titles.

Not at all.

The only series that would be up there is Mario with platformers. Mario dominates that genre, but everything else is pretty weak all around.

Fantasy Platformer/Casual platformer/Child latformerStatusShuffle

ROFL! I don't think I've EVER seen that genre of game in any store or on any website.

Onto the original question:

No.

No gaming company has the market won in every genre, come on now.

As for individual genres, maybe a couple. I think the Mario franchise does often produce the best platformers out there. Tetris is the king of puzzle games, but to say it's Nintendo's game is just criminal. If anyone knows the story of Tetris, they know that it was created by a single man in communist The Soviet Union, and he risked his butt to get the game to the rest of the world.

Zelda games are always good, too, but what genre do they fit into exactly? They're not quite an RPG but they're more than just your average action game. The same thing applies to Metroid. I'm completely in love with the series, but it's more than just one genre, it's a mixture of platforming, action, and even some RPG elements.

They are action adventure games, Zleda is action adventure, not sure how you're confused on that part. Also slightly off but rpg elements? there are things that existed before they were called rpg elements being called rpg elements, and i think that term should cease. IMO anyway. There are quite a few games like Metroid, i consider Metroid myself to be an Adventure platformer or Open platformer, and an example of a game like that could easily be SOTN. I would check it out if you never played it. Play similar.

I don't really see the point in such a broad comparison of one company, but I certainly think Nintendo has the platformer genre dominated many times over; both 3D and 2D. SSB Melee is my favorite fighter of all time, so there's that, and I'd also posit that, whatever genre Metroid Prime is a part of, Metroid Prime destroys. Whether that's action-adventure or first-person adventure, makes little difference. Finally, you forgot racer entirely - even though there are games I like more in that genre than Mario Kart, it's still a big part of the big N's portfolio.

Not in each genre but Mario is the undisputed king of the platforming genre and for adventure it's either Zelda or Metal Gear but the rest are debateable.

Personally, I don't think there is anything out there that consistantly delivers like the "Legend of Zelda" series in the Action-Adventure genre.

StatusShuffle

you have got to be kidding me

pikmin is nowhere near the best RTS games and pilotwings is nowhere near microsoft flight simulator

I think the games he mentioned in the OP were just examples of games people usually mention within said genre, because he even says "MS Simulator beat the living *blablha* out of this", he also mentions Kessen being better than Pikmin. I don't think he thinks any of those he listed are the best, even with Mario he said he didn't find it the best.

Comparing Pikmin and Pilotwings to PC RTS and flight sim games is quite stupid tbh. It's like you'd compare Mario Kart and Smash Bros. to Gran Turismo and Virtua Fighter. It's different games that have very little in common.

Yes, they have nothing in common except flying. They are completely different games with different purpose despite looking similar at the first glance.

Comparing a whole franchise for king over a genre is just too hard especially when theres usually so many sub catergories. My favourite series for a genre changes from game to game, I couldn't list a single series where I loved every game they put out.

Though since this seems to be about nintendo I usually really enjoy 2d mario platforming. I use to really love the Zelda series but I havn't been blown away by them for many years now.
