here is something I have been thinking about, so I came here to find out the opinion of other gamers. I was playing Catherine today and I noticed after a while that I was feeling very down and depressed. so I thought about other games that I've played and how they make me feel. Mass effect games make me feel positive and good. xenoblade chronicales made me feel positive and good. metroid prime made me feel positive and good. world of warcraft made me feel positive and good. but catherine made me feel sad. games like killzone make me feel awful. minecraft makes me feel a little down. what games make you feel differently ? what do you think is the main causes of these feelings?

something like a good round of Battlefield, the type that makes adrenaline or something come out, can make me feel happy afterwards.
I guess it would be because it made me feel like I accomplished something (without actually doing it), or because adrenaline or something is still there, or maybe good chemicals go into your body after your body is excited.

but then something like a dark part of a STALKER game or mod, where it is lonely or sad, doesn't make me feel sad afterwards or actually sad during it. Maybe even happy afterwards, because a game managed to make a feeling that is really really mild and different than actually being sad, but something was there and that's pretty coool.

a scary game like SCP: Containment Breach would probably make me scared to walk around at night afterwards.

Sometimes I get different "feelings" from different games... for instance, if I play the Wind Waker, I get a kind of adventurous and almost care free feeling from it. If I play Silent Hill 2 I get a sad feeling from it. If I play Pokemon I get a competitive feel from it. These aren't things I feel myself, but feelings I feel the game projects.

Dead or Alive Extreme games make me depressed, because they remind me that in the age of the internet there are still people ready to pay $60 for some softcore porn

If a game has well developed, likable characters and something especially good or bad happens to them, then I suppose I feel a little happy or sad. Or if a game has a big epic climax, I feel a bit excited. Mostly though I just feel interested, and less bored than I would be if I wasn't playing it.

Edit: In Final Fantasy XIII-2 there's a chapter called A Dying World, with an extremely bleak and lonely environment, dark except for a fabulous crimson sunset, very somber music playing, etc. That really got me lol. They did an absolutely fantastic job with the atmosphere there.

Sure, games are no different than movies in this respect. Each has a unique tone and flavor. A game that brightens my mood would be one like Katamari Damacy or Journey. Others, like Manhunt or the original MGS (don't know why.....SNAAAAAAKE!!!!) bring me down.

I think when life is good, playing lonely and depressing games can be good. but when life is not great, a person won't want to play a depressing game.

Any Dragonball Z game makes me feel happy because of the nostalgia factor. It reminds me of my childhood.

Same goes for any other game based on an anime from my childhood. Like InuYasha Secret of the Cursed mask or YuYu Hakusho Dark Tournament.

Braid makes me feel depressed because it has a very depressing ending.

Grandia 3 makes me very happy because it's got such a nice atmosphere. I've never said this about a game before, but it's got great charm. The game is extremely polished, the story is very interesting thanks to the very well done cutscenes and great voice acting. (Aside from Alfina's voice actress.)

Don't really know any. Though If I play some games when I'm feeling unhappy, a lot of times it tends to make me feel irritatedand frustrated. That's when picking up an old favorite game and getting lost in it can usually make me feel better.

Kind of an interesting thread- I too have given these things some thought lately. I tend to agree that it's often not that the game is the cause of the mood so much as it's an extension of what you're already feeling. Sure there are exceptions to this and there's no doubt that things that remind us of the carefree days of youth are sure to induce the warm tinglies but generally speaking, I feel like my fave gaming moments are the ones when life's good in general. When you go in feeling depressed, alone, afraid or whatever, it seems like games can extenuate those feelings. What else is interesting to consider is the effect these emotions may have on determining out favorite genres or what games we decide to sink our cash on. There's a whole lot of psychology at play that you don't often hear much about.

A few games did this.

Twisted Metal Black on the PS2 had such a depressing vibe I sold it. I don't have a problem with dark or depressing games in general, or ever, actually, but Twisted Metal Black just had this incredible blue monday feeling.

On the other hand Chrono Cross gave me a very happy feeling, the game's atmosphere was so absorbing with beautiful locations, paradiselike weather and happy, loveable characters.

Those are 2 games I can recall that actually changed my mood significantly.

I used to love playing alternate history games like Freedom Fighters and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty for this reason- watchinng the invasion of the russians or the germans inspired a sense of horror in me when I considered it from a 'what if' viewpoint. Other games make me feel like a badass, but of differennt shades- WET and Arkham City make me feel like an angry badass, Captain America: Super Soldier makes me feel like a heroic badass, and WH40K: Space Marine makes me feel like a righteous badass(although the scope of the conflict, interaction with the NPCs, and audiologs add to the same kind of horror I mentioned above).

i dont know about down and depressed....but ive played games that absolutely make me giddy...usually my old games for nostalgic reasons....

games are like time markers for me. if i was playing a game around the time i was feeling down and depressed in real life, i tend to not play it because there are memories attached to them...but not the content itself. i guess im not as into a game to bring those kind of emotions....

I've been too busy skyrocketing up the iceberg lounge leaderboard to be posting on here- I shattered my high score last Sunday, and topped it again last night. I'm now #319 worldwide! So SEXY!

I enjoyed all the responses here :) I know that my main focus i games right now is to not feel lonely. pretty telling. playing kingdoms of amalur now and it's pretty good. nice positive feeling and reminds me of WoW. I really like the comment about time markers and the emotional association. that's why i will avoid okami like the plague form now on. even though I owe a lot to it, it really helped pull me through. now it is just a reminder of tough times. it reminds me of a thing I read one time. can't remember where. a comment on an art piece or something. a person felt such gratitude for the kakariko village in ocarina of time. they said it was because it was where they retreated to when they were being constantly bullied in school. it was their personal escape and a place to feel safe. rather touching. it really inspires me to make video games. it's something i really want to do. to give people these precious moments and memories and to tide them through tough times etc.

Alan Wake. I feel depressed and detached to the point where I'm welcoming an AI companion to keep me company. Game does a good job at making you feel lonely lol.

Games like Uncharted have always cheered me up because of how 'soft-hearted' they feel. Funny characters, great adventures and overall games like that just feel rewarding. Then there's games like The Darkness which, as the title already kinda explains, are darker toned. The mood is depressing. Even after succesfully completing a chapter, I feel a bit down because the story still remains sad lol.
