A position in video game development where you just direct a games directions and come up with innovations for the game without actually programming? I just ask this because i think i have great ideas in for games but i plan on going to law school in a year and do not have the time to study programing. So basically is a game director a programmer?

Thank you for the responses in advance

I'm pretty sure they'd also program, because if all you did was have ideas, then what would you do with the other months-to-years that the game would be in development?

There are positions in the industry where you're mostly a "idea/concept" kind of guy/gal. But to get to a point where you can say "Okay everyone, here's my idea for a game, go make it", I assume you'd have to put in quite a bit of years of (successful) grunt work in the industry.

I remember watching a video about the directors of all the god of war games. And they never started out in that role. They all were able to program or draw or something like that and worked their way up to game directors. You have to start at the bottom-mid level in most jobs work your way up. You can't go to the top straight away. Sorry. I would also love this job but there is a tonne of pressure and stress involved. Also i wouldn't do a job like that if you have a girlfriend or a wife. It will devour your time and your life

You're thinking of lead game designers or producers

Do it the way I learned: Start with Game Maker, so you can learn the train-of-though behind programming, and how to follow a syntax, in a more forgiving environment, which also encourages you (Game Maker lets you very easily make a playable product, encouraging you to continue programming.) Afterwards, when you get the concepts behind programming and the problem-solving required down, move on to C++ or C# (Avoid Basic at all costs...learning in Basic will basically destroy your ability to program beyond recovery...once you get in that mindset, you won't get out easily.)
