As the topic says, why do people in the games industry such as reviewers, developers and even fans use the term 'IP' to describe

a new game series? What are we ..LAWYERS??! It always irks me to hear that, in the same way people are referred to as 'consumers'.

Mind you, I've only recently heard the use of 'IP' in my many years of following games so looks like a lot of people just pick up lawyer speak (without thinking) as the industry gets more $$$ behind it.

It just works and is simple. especially in a market driven by the Franchise mentality. You could say it many diffrent ways, but IP is quick, simple, and literally to the point.

I'd say that term would have to go on my list of "Most Hated Gaming Phrases."

What else would new ideas be called? 'Intellectual property' seems just fine...

I agree. I hate it when people use corporate jargon, in general.

So what you're saying is that instead of creating new intellectual properies, they should try to leverage their existing brands to tap into their key demographic? :P

ugh, i know. it's soulless terminology. i hate it too. and i think if you use it long enough it changes other words in your vocab. so eventually you sound like a PR clone for some corporation.

gamers shouldn't use it. it is 'quick' though. i guess those kinds of people are in a rush; going to meetings, calling people etc.

I agree, who cares? There are far more things that annoy me in videogames then someone calling a game a "new ip".

The only time I hate the term 'new IP' is when it's used like "You are BANNED. If you try to make a new account, we know your IP [new or not], so don't try it! "

yep, the IP term still bugs me, and reading the thread its bugging me more. IP should only really concern the owner of such item (in this case, computer game series) and the lawyers, yet it seems to be now part of the vernacular. What was once a term only encountered in economic or even a politics class is now used by say, an 20 year old gamer. Interestingly, I've never seen it used outside video games.

There was a time on SW that it was used as a verb constantly..but not only on Gamespot.

It's too letters, two syllables, and makes sense (intellectual property). It's not lawyer talk, it's smart talk.

"Two letters", sorry.

What else should it be called anyway, new franchise? IP is a property of a given producer, so that won't work. What's so complex about IP?

I really don't care. I'm more concerned about the quality of games.

Nope, doesn't bother me at all. It's a descriptive term, short and to-the-point. I find "IP" more user friendly than "newly-imagined fictional universe." It never occurred to me that it would bother someone until reading the replies in this thread.

So....does that mean you also get irked whenever the terms 'license' and 'copyright' are thrown around?

No... It's faster than typing franchise or series, and every one knows what it means.

I see nothing wrong with it:|

It makes me think of IP adresses and such rather then games.
