DOOM ETERNAL

DOOM 2016 kinda feels like a slow and limping, crippled old lady suffering a serious covid-infection and being way too easy getting laid, compared to DOOM ETERNAL, that´s why.

@wladolfputler: I'm currently playing DOOM (2016). Should I skip to DOOM ETERNAL?

Nope. It´s still a great game, it´s just ETERNAL feeling like being on steroids and meth, compared to the 2016 version.

I am basically as well still enjoying the old DOOM II or CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN, even that they´re rather "awful" compared to their next-gen sequels.

R u playing it on harder difficulty level? This is where the game actually shines, but i also have to admit my nerves weren´t strong enough to handle DOOM ETERNAL on its heaviest difficulty level, so i re-started with one level below, that was just right then and i wasn´t in trouble of damaging my precious keyboard while throwing it through the closed window out onto da streets on multiple occiasons.

Eternal has the pacing loop of a Devil May Cry 3-5 experience, in first person.

D00M 2016 plays closer to a modern interpretation of D00M 1-64/ Quake III hybrid.

So make of that as one will, neither is bad, they do feel quite different from each other however.

As such Eternal personally doesn't give me that D00M itch, I found that in Dusk and Ion Fury instead. But Eternal is clearly a solid and well designed game.

I enjoyed Eternal a lot more than 2016. But both are worth playing.

I'm super late to the party here, but I'd say Eternal. Like @RSM-HQ said, Eternal plays more like a hack'n'slash in first-person, as opposed to DOOM 2016's more traditional DOOM style.

Even though I greatly prefer the classic DOOM style over Eternal, I still prefer Eternal over 2016. DOOM 2016 did things I liked, but also quite a few things I didn't like. Eternal, while doubling down on things I don't really want in DOOM games, still did what it did well.

@Litchie: Agreed wholeheartedly, D00M 2016 has issues, for me was collectables and weapon upgrades, I just don't want that in D00M, even Unmaker keys in 64 was too much. If I have to run around in a D00M game it better be a puzzle or an ambush.

As someone with taste in First Person Shooters what did you think of the Ion Fury sequel/ Phantom Fury reveal?

The trailer looked promising to me.

Yet considering Ion Fury was a successor to Duke Nukem 3D. Is Phanom Fury really replicating Duke Nukem: Forever? Not sure that's very wise, what with Forever being a pile of shit.

Yup, that's exactly what I meant. Collectables and weapon upgrades just don't belong in DOOM, imo. Not only does it not fit well, it also makes the games annoying to replay. Since you need them for upgrades, you have to grab them every time. And to give the player so many weapons with different alternative modes, runes, grenades, flamethrower, etc.. it's just too much shit, man. Keep it simple for the next DOOM, please.

Not to talk about the artstyle. DOOM can actually be pretty scary. 2016 and Eternal aren't at all. Really bright environments everywhere, cuter looking monsters. Feels a bit lame after the very cool monster designs in DOOM 3. Or remember when you got ambushed by a Baron of Hell in DOOM 1&2, with the screeching howl they do? I still jump every freaking time that happens. xD

Haha, yeah DN:F shouldn't have been a thing. I sadly haven't played Ion Fury yet. Looks great and I should get on that ASAP. Haven't seen the sequel announcement, thanks for posting! Watching now, brb.

EDIT: OK, that was a nice trailer. Opinions:
Punchy weapons. That shotgun looks sweet.
I find the graphics charming of both games. Not sure what I prefer, but I like that the sequel doesn't look the same.
There was a flying and car driving session. That's cool. Not sure if there was any of that in the first one.
Big Mech boss looked cool.
Random air hockey session, lulz. Always enjoy some mini-games in this style of game.
Sliding mechanic, cool cool. That's usually fun.

I think it looks like a nice fast-paced retro styled FPS. Will reserve further judgement.

@Litchie: I do enjoy the horror vibe of older D00M games but they went a little too far with D00M 3 and I think that's what hurt the game because it wasn't a very fun game. Level design was also awful. Tough to really give it too much praise for horror also because early 2000's was peak Survival Horror. D00M 2016 isn't very scary I do agree, and once we hit Eternal it's almost parody in its tone. However D00M is a series that has come back from being an old and forgotten franchise. Even the build up to 2016's game seemed hopeless, I don't recall many on this forum giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Ion Fury starts strong so would overall say it's alright, still would only recommend if itching for a Duke 3D clone and it happens to be on sale, really drags on and runs out of ideas fast. The small enemies in the game are also a pain, and used far too often.

Ion Fury is a solid if padded-out game, but I don't put it close to Dusk which is still my favorite Single Player FPS to be released in a very long time. Downside to Dusk is, not many can look past it's 90's 3D artstyle. Admittedly it is ugly as sin. If it released with a modern coat of paint, I think Dusk would be the most talked about FPS on these forums.

@RSM-HQ: Yeah, DOOM 3 has lots of problems. To say some good things about it though, loved its enemy designs and lighting. Something about the game makes me want to revisit it often.

I really need to play more Dusk. I've only played a little so far, but it felt very solid. I feel you on Ion Fury, and gathered as much just from watching gameplay videos. Still wanna play it though. Must admit that the sequel lines up more with what I want to play right now though.

Also played Prodeus recently, which I loved. It's not done yet, so I don't want to play too much. But I'm very much looking forward to that as well.

Prodeus does look great and gory, I hope it turns out great. Can't find myself to jump on more Early Access games right now. Got too many of them and most will never be finished.

Wrath was the one I dived in for Early Access, and while a great start/ nice demo, I'm disappointed the developer is messy and exploiting Early Access in all the wrong ways. It has been noted those that made the impressive EA demo are no longer working on the game, fired I believe one of the former staff mentioned, and as the new trailer showcases that's in no way a positive. Furthermore all the goals they gave two years ago for Wrath are no-where to be seen, and it's just a mess. I backed the wrong horse that's for sure.

A shame because I was very hopeful for Wrath: Aeon of Ruin and it turned into a scam project.

Really a shame to hear. Wrath looked awesome and I was really looking forward to it. But that new trailer did look weak.. Oh well. We got Prodeus and Phantom Fury. Gloomwood seems to be shaping into something good as well. "Thief with guns" they call it. Not sure what's going on with Graven, but people seem to dislike it for some reason.

@Litchie: I did like the look on Graven, the Hexen vibes are strong. At this rate I'm just seeing if it comes out of Early Access.

Games like Baldur's Gate III and Valheim are constantly being supported and they will be finished; yet outside the Ion Fury team, I'm not confident in any of these teams under the new 3D Realms, they just seem to throw out a demo and fire the staff. Not very reassuring.

On the note of these shooters Amid Evil was another I grabbed but did when it was fully released. It's ok. A little too forgiving, showers the player with resources all the time and the enemy A.I. is not aggressive enough. It may be mean spirited, but I call it "FPS for babies".

Prodeus is on my wishlist, hope it turns out great!
