Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King. Same game. It's good if you like traditional RPGs. One thing I like DQ8 more than other RPGs is that all the main characters are very likable.lol i got the name wrong i meant jorney of the cursed king, not 8

It is a great game, easily 80+ hours. The plot is simplistic but engaging, the characters are likeable and the game is balanced just right in difficulty. This is a standout game in the PS2's RPG catalogue.
I absolutely loved it. It needs to be in your taste though. JRPG, turn-based, quite a bit of grinding.
If you like traditional JRPG's then you will like this one. Although I am not much of an RPG player, this is probably my favorite RPG of all time.
Based off of graphics, I love this game. Other than that, I can't tell you anything more. I have never been able to get into this game and I quickly get bored within 90 minutes of playing. Not saying it's a bad game, it's just not one I can get into.
IMO it is one of the very few games that I can call a masterpiece. In fact, if I were to give that title to any game, Dragon Quest VIII would deseerve it most for being polished to near perfection while maintaining a scope very few games can manage.
It is the greatest RPG ever made in terms of flawless execution.

While I wouldn't go that far with praise, it is a very good game that belongs in any RPG lovers collection.
Hmm, I think I've been ignoring this game for far too long. Might be just what I need to get me back into quasi-old school RPGs.Lode_Runner
I remember buying this game and only playing it over a year later. I had tried the first hour a few times but never got sucked it. Once I put in a few hours thye just simply started adding up. Very addictive game, especially if you get to the monster battle mini game!

Okay, here are a few things you need to know:
- Huge map, yeah. But its all the SAME. All the islands are almost empty, save for towns, and the landscape is breathtakingly repetitive.
- Gameplay: You get very few spells. While that's a good thing, because you end up using the most powerful in any rpg anyway, gameplay is very very repetitive. There's no strategy. Almost. While a few fights will get you thinking, most of them boil down to button mashing. And if they don't, its because the monsters are ridiculously tough. Toughness here doesn't mean they need you to think it out...they just have truckloads of hp.
- Animation, dialogue is brilliant and funny. Characters are very well done. Great voice acting. Plot, although thin, suffices and entertains.
- I have no idea what the hoopla is all about regarding this game. Mindless grind and vast stretches of empty land that's all the SAME with a few treasure chests thrown around at the weirdest of places, and random encounters that'll have you tearing your hair out...that's what they call EPIC these days?

Each and every point you mentioned is true, no arguing that. However that did not change the fact that it was a very enjoyable game. The good far outweighs the bad.
Definitely one of my top games of all time. The lovely presentation, the simple yet enjoyable combat, the inventive enemies, the charming characters, beautiful environments and the long overall playtime (about 80 hours at least) make it a real keeper.
Might as well chime in here and say DQ8 is my favourite PS2 RPG.
It's got that great old-school charm while progressing the series in not to drastic a fashion, but just the perfect amount.
The only thing I really didn't like about the game, and this is a small problem, but the victory "fanfare" after a successful battle...a two second long sound effect. I know it's with DQ style and tradition and whatnot, but damn. What a way to feel underwhelmed after a difficult fight.
Easily one of the greatest RPG's ever made. People who use "random encounters" as a BAD thing in an RPG must not have played to many of the better ones out there... lol. Sure there is some grinding in this game, the fact that you have to level up in certain areas fighting random enemies to be strong enough to advance to the next area, but then again, that is the way it should be, at least in my opinion. Too many games today have the system where enemies level up as you do.... I really don't like that at all. There is nothing like a level 37 rat that can take a quarter of your hp with one hit.. lol. The gameplay, voice acting, characters, items, and weapons are very well designed, and this game will forever be held as one of the best if not the best of its kind!
Dragon Warrior/Quest series and the Breath of Fire series are great games to look into if you enjoy gameplay, a challenge, and exploring.
Just throwing in my .02 cents as well. Awsome game. It's a throwback to the old 8/16-bit styled rpgs while not seeming dated at all. Great story, great characters and enough playtime to last you well into 80+ hours and beyond.

I agree. I actually like random battles, since they make you have to fight for a change.I also really don't like enemies levelling up with you. I think it's really a flawif anything.
