*gets up on the Dragon Quest soap box and prepares for a long and rambling joyful speech*
I saw this a couple days ago and all I can say is that it is about time. When the remake for DQ IV got cancelled back in 2001 I was disappointed to say the least. That game was amazing on the NES so with the list of changes I expectit to have,it stands to be the handheld game of the year. And Dragon Quest V has what is probably the best storyline in the series. We are long overdue for this one. The only short coming the original Super Famicomversion had was a very limited number of monster types to battle. I'm sure they'll be incorporating a couple dozen more for variety's sake now. Most importantly we can watch Slime Races in the casino once more.
Dragon Quest VI is the only one I can't claim to be familiar with. I do remember getting excited about it when Nintendo first announced it was going to come over to America after we missed out on DQ V, but that got dropped since it was too close to the end of the SNES's life cycle. It does have a similiar class system to DQ VII though if you're familiar with that (which was pretty much the only good thing about that game). So I'm especially looking forward to this game.
Kind of cool to see the DS become the official platform for DragonQuest. Now if only Nintendo comes up with a way to play DS games on a TV.
I'm still waiting for that one faithful day when a DQ game will not feature Akira Toriyama's art style. This has always been the reason why I refuse to buy or play any of the DQ games. I just can't stand looking at some of the character designs. KreatzionI doubt that'll ever happen, as that has been one of the hallmarks of the franchise. That, and Koichi Sugiyama's music.
For many people, a DQ probably wouldn't be a DQ game without those two elements, so I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Strange. My refusal stems from its complete and utter lack of gameplay.
between the DS and PSP I can pretty much play every RPG I never got a chance to play.
cant wait for these and the star ocean games

While we're at it, screw Suikoden and ICO too.
This is awesome news...but...only for Japan.
Until I hear any confirmation that these games (including DQIX) will come to the states, I won't jump for joy just yet.
And one last thing, are they remakes like FFIII & IV are or are they just ports?
ASK_Story
Same, if they are announced for the states that is when I'll start to hyperventilate.

Considering Joker is coming out in november here and that's a side story, I really don't see why they wouldn't bring those here. As for me I'm 100% sure they'll bring it here. + as far as main entry of the serie goes, we didn't miss one ever since they started bringing them here with VII. Now that the NA market is more familiar with the franchise, I think it's a pretty good time to introduce those games that never came out here.
As far as remakes or port goes, VI will probably be a remake. As for IV & V, those have already been remade on PSX so I'm guessing it'll be a port of those with some added content probably.

I hope it dose come to the state side. Ever since I played dragon quest 8 on ps2 I fell in love with the series. Even if it dose come out we won't see it released in the states for a very long time. With all those ports and remakes coming to the ds it makes me think of the handhelds future. I mean sure we get original games like EBA and NSMW but a huge company like SE porting out their games I'm sure others companies will follow. I hope the ds lineup for 08 aren't justremakes and sequels.

Those are YOUR opinons not facts. I happened to enjoy DQVIII VERY much and found it's exploration very fun and adding to it's gameplay experience. I'm sure you've seen your fighting games get dogged many times so please don't dogg others favorite franchises.
Yes even though Dragon Quest is nothing compared to more core JRPG's such as Odin Sphere, it's still a very fun game series to just kick back and enjoy. :)
would square enix not translate these games if theyre going to bother remaking them?... i think not
but ill keep mycelebrations for when localisation for them is announced anyway
lol either way this is a megaton lol the only dragonquest games i have played have been in japanese and no not for long because i cant read japanese ... anyway i guess it would be an understatment to say japan is rather happy with the ds right now
Anyway I'm excited for these games especially IV since it's said to be the best in the series by most. I'm still mostly stoaked for IX. I'm happy *along with 95% of the DQ community* got rid of that *IMHO and many others* stupid action hack-n-slash combat system . I wouldn't want the game dumbed down to a generic Diablo hack-n-slash fest (saying that Diablo's attack system is dumbing down itself making it generic not saying Diablo's attack system is generic*even more so then it already is* to follow the whole "real-time trend* that many JRPG's are *well did for the time, seems like SRPG's and RTSRPG's are the new trend*. However I'm stoaked that all this time the DS is FINALLY getting a true killer third party game. Not a spin-off, not a "handheld" series, not a branching of a franchise, not a remake, not a continuing handheld series, but a TRUE continuation of a game series. It will be intresting to see how this will sell and show that if third party games can realy sell as well on a Nintendo platform then as in another. But I'm realizing I'm getting this thread off-topic  But anyway I was originally going to wait for a VC release *but seeing that Square-Enix said a no-no to that* I guess this will gladly do. :)

I can understand why people would think that. Even DQVIII was simplistic and not entirely engaging when it came to gameplay. For myself, since I play such an eclectic blend of games it is that very reason that I find I enjoy it. Not because of lack of gameplay but just the simplicity of the game. There is a certain charm I have always enjoyed from it.
Perhaps I am a traditionalist in some sense or it merely might be just the nostalgia that courses through me when I play DQ and it reminds me of when I first played DQ back when it came out on the NES. All I know is that it doesn't surprise me to find that people feel that DQ is lacking in any depth in regards to gameplay and for that I can't fault them. To each their own.
Hey I didnt know they canned that stupid real time combat from DQ9, thats awesome. Now im actually interested in the game again. Exactly Dragon Quest without a turnbased combat system is like a Mario game without platforms. What really gets me angry is the sheer fact that people treated the whole "changing back to old combat system" as a bad thing, tons of JRPG's have real-time combat systems can their just be one that still has turnbased?

I've never seen a good fighting game get attacked in an indefensible way, so when it comes up, I simply make the necessary defense. I've also never apologized for how I feel or watered down my comments, and I have no plans to start now.
Yeah okay. Wake me up when theMOTHER 1+2+3 compilation actually comes out and hits America.
The Dragon Quest spirit died in me after missing out on the rest of the games since 3 and Monsters 2.

Yeah not even Final Fantasy has turn based battles anymore... I agree.Final Fantasy XII IMHO is a big insult to the series and JRPG's in general. The game wasn't even a JRPG, it basically took everything from a WRPG the inferior combat system, usual lack of story *especially events and characters personalitys*, lack of pacing and polish that you get with a linear design only, etc. and left out all the good things about the WRPG such as the strong role playing, total control level up, and controlling your fate, etc. and left the games at it was, and to do it at a time when JRPG's are seen as "inferior" to WRPG's by much of the gaming community? For shame Square-Enix for shame.

Third Strike sucks and has absoletly no skill what so ever. I could play against anyone in the world. I've done it before when I battled against Diego. He used his Ken and I annihalted him with Sean just by randomly hitting buttons. :P
That sarcasm reminded me of what some fanboy said in System Wars.
"Fighting games? Nobody plays those games only n00bs and casuals."
Anyway it's still your opinion, I'm not sure if you were stating it as an opinion or fact, but everyone has different tastes as of what makes a game. I think it's a great franchise because it has a great polish of keeping you entertained, and a fun and easy laid back combat system I can relax and enjoy to. :)

And this is the attitude I dont like, we need to embrace strong innovations like FF12. Im not saying we need to do away with turn based for good but damn sometimes I dont want to play a turn based game.
The only DQ game I've played was DQ8 and I can see why people want it turnbased. The game just reaches its full potential as a turnbased game. Certain things the game wants to accomplish is made for turnbased.

Multi-Alias
Strong innovations? There's a difference between innovating as in revolutionizing the gameplay and innovating just to experiment. How does changing a games genre "innovation"? I mean I could see mixing and matching it like action-adventure and RPG like Castlevania, but FFXII just seemed to change the whole genre in general. I only support "innovation" if it makes the game better, but with FFXII it made everything worse. A worse combat system until it was basically hack-n-slash while the "skills" and "magic" were useless *I could almost state this as a fact and not an opinion*, their was little pacing so most of the time you were just running around pressing "X" and letting the game do the work for you, the gambit system....I'm sorry just no. All of the above were all in my opinion so I don't want the usual poster who comes in here and says "OMFG blah blah blah, rant rant rant, ya ya ya!". Anyway, if you don't want to play a turnbased game then you're in luck since many console JRPG's and a fair share amount of handheld JRPG's have real-time combat. If anything we need more Turnbased JRPG's.

I'm curious if you think the FFIV/FFVI gameplay (name escapes me at the moment) is turn based. I like that system a lot better than straight turn based, and would have no qualms with IX being in that system.
You also implied that you haven't played IV. I weep for you.

It is turnbased it's called ATB or Active Turn Based System.
It's literally the exact same thing as traditional turnbased only your timed. I personally dislike ATB's because it rushes you to do things and usually totally X's out adding any much skill or depth to the combat system since it's next to impossible to make complicated plans in under 8 seconds.

That's it.
Thing is, it can be turned off. I mean to the point that once a person's turn is up, all other actions will be paused. From "Active" to "Wait."
The reason I like it is that it gives more weight to agility. At the end of a turn based day, a soldier is still getting the same amount of actions as a fighter, while in ATB, a fighter can get four to a soldiers three, for example.
Isn't that big a deal, but given a choice, I'd take ATB.
^^^^^^I disagree it is by fact that Active Turn Based sucks, it has no skill nothing it's all garbage.
:P Just kidding, it's really all about preference and what you prefer, ATB use to be very popular but it seems that it has faded away. I guess that is so since most devs. and people that prefered it would rather take the "speed" all the way and make it "real-time". It's a shame though because even though I prefer WTB much more ATB once in a while is a breath of fresh air.
^ As opposed to the North American Dragon Warrior IV release that wasn't in English?
Snarkiness aside, Dragon Warrior IV is findable. I'm more interested in V, VI, both which have not had an official translation and North American release.
I have no gripes with people who complain about the battle system of Dragon Quest. Yep, it's basically the same turn based combat that it was 20 years ago. Yep, it's archaic. That's okay though. I certainly don't play DQ for the battle system, but at the same time I don't discard the series because of it. There's so much else to these games that many other RPGs lack.
The main thing that appeals to me is the feeling of exploration in these games. Wandering around is something that DQ games still embrace and encourage. Too many RPGs have gotten extremely linear and hold the hands of the player. That annoys me to no end. DQ VIII had a wonderful world that rewarded players who were willing to step off the roads of the game and see what else was out there, and really that's something all of the games in the series have in common.
Not to mention the consistant art style of Toriyama, appealing characters (even DQ VII had one or two)and the slights nods or direct connections that the games have to one another. DQ is kind of like an old pair of sneakers. Familiar and comforting.Games don't always have to be innovative and trying new things. There's something to be said about familiarity have its place.

I'd be really interested in seeing how you'd take the Grandia system.
One thing that's being swept under the rug here is the actual name of ATB. It's not "Active Turn-Based." It's Active Time Battle, so the debate as to whether or not it can be considered turn-based or real time is still wide open. I personally think of it as a hybrid system.
For me, character development/growth systems trump battle systems in terms of what sells me on an RPG. I've only played Grandia Xtreme thus far, and I didn't quite get into the game that much (then again, I also didn't like Valkyrie Profile 2), so perhaps I should try one of the other Grandias...but the battle system really is secondary regarding how much I'd like an RPG.I'd be really interested in seeing how you'd take the Grandia system.
