Topic^

I found an old Dreamcast at my local gamestore going for about $40 and now Im debating whether I should get one or not. I heard the library is pretty suckish though. I pretty much just want one for a few games...

  • Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and II
  • Sonic Adventure
  • Sonic Adventure 2
  • Time Stalker
  • Sorcerian
  • Falcom Classics
If anyone could recommend any other games Id appreciate it.

Samba De Amigo, Soul Calibur, Typing of the dead, space channel 5. You should buy it no questions man.... The DC is actually a fairly diesel system and actually does have a bunch of fun games :D

I can't believe someone beside me mentioned D2.

All of the games mentioned in this thread are amazing, Dreamcast is a great system.

People have mentioned some great games...but why do you want Time Stalkers? I still have it but I never really had too much fun with it, to be honest I liked both of the Evolution fair bit more. Also it is absolutely necessary to have Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur both of those games are amazing.

Its a great system, though I agree that the game catalog is hurting a bit. The good games that are on there will more than make up for it. The dreamcast till this day is one of my favorite systems of all time, if not my favorite. So yes you should buy it.

Dreamcast is the best! You'd be stupid not to take advantage and grab it. As far as games to get? I could go all day with that :o As far as what to get with it: - Keyboard and Mouse, because unlike the ps2, many of the fps's for the dreamcast did support key/mouse, so you could then use it in the DC versions of UT and Q3A. - VGA box. This was the only way to get 480p out of the system, and the majority of games supported it even without explicitly saying so. But you want the box and not the "VGA adapter" because if you come across one of the rare games that won't boot in VGA mode, the standard VGA box would provide S-Video and composite output for video as an alternative. Games I'd suggest? - Marvel vs. Capcom 1&2 - House of the Dead (I think 2 was on there) - They had Crazy taxi 2 on there as well, IIRC - Space Channel 5 part 1 & 2 - Q3A & UT for Dreamcast were very good, had superior framerate (over the PS2 versions) and had online play too. - Rez on Dreamcast was the ideal version; at least until it showed up on the XBLA. But still... But yea, nearly ten years later and still keeping the Dreamcast dream alive. :)

The Dreamcast had easily the best launch in console gaming history, with an absurdly high number of highly rated and quality games from the word "go." Some would say there were simply too many coming out all at once and thus why not so many got as much revenue as they should have. And the list of games made for the dreamcast would go on even longer still than that. Especially in Japan; after the "end" of the DC, the SDK's for the system became seriously cheap (a whole system with GD-ROM burner so you could press your own games for the thing was like $800 on eBay a few times  ), so a lot of indie devs over there snapped them up and had been working on making new titles to keep the thing going. It continued for so long that even China released a knock-off they called the Treamcast  for those whose systems burned up and stuff. :( Finally it prompted for Sega to re-enable the PSO servers for the DC version again so that people could continue playing without employing some serious hacking.

some of the games are extremely expensive, and well the amount of games someone previously listed, the rarity and cost of most of them in my opinion make them unreachable with the money i have, so it really depends how much money you have to spend, but if you only get one or two games, i suggest shenmue and sonic adventure. there pretty easy to pick up and fairly priced.

It's a nice system and there are enough good games to make it worth $40. Most if not all of the games I liked on it have already been mentioned in this thread. I've been thinking about getting another one, kind of wish I'd never sold it (I used to have a bad habit of selling my old systems before getting another one :( ).

....The thing about Dreamcast is really depends on what types of games you like. If your a hugh and I mean a really hugh Sega fanboy it's good or if you like Japanese games a fair bit it's good but other then that it's not that great but not really really bad. I love Sega but the Dreamcast is something else. To me it's like N64, in that I know there is a good number of games on it but I just don't feel the need to buy it again.

I would stay away. The majority of good games on the dreamcast can be bought on other systems. However, if you don't have those other systems, maybe you'd like to invest in a dreamcast. I bought a dreamcast, and the only reason I'm keeping it is to play and to own some rarer survival horror games (the games aren't as rare as their place in most game collections - D2).

Great graphics, innovative games and online play not your thing?

online play for how many games? and how many of them can you still play online games?

the ps2 was launched shortly after and it completly defeated the DC graphics wise

yes it has great games, but when compared to the saturn or the genesis you can find many of them on other consoles, usually with a graphical uplift. You can find the sonic adventure series on the gamcube, headhunter and rez on the PS2, Shenmue 2 on the xbox and many more

Too bad the PS2 version of Rez was flawed, graphically and audibly.

Also, where's my PS2 ports of Ikaruga, Under Defeat, and Border Down? Fact is, the poor PS2 could never handle those games, and in regards to Ikaruga, Treasure said they tried porting it to the PS2's hardware but it was just a mess; they wanted to stay as far away from the PS2 as they could after that.

There's also the fact that Dreamcast was ideal for sprite-based games; Bangai-O was so intense that a PS2 port wasn't even considered, due to the PS2's poor handling of 2D sprites.

My bad. I'm not familiar with virtual on or tech romancer, but there was a jet grind radio released on xbox, I believe. Jet Grind Radio future or something. Knowing the other dreamcast ports, I assume it was another port and not a different game.

It was a different game. :/ A sequel, which took place after the first game. Crappy music and a dumbed-down graffiti mechanic hurt it immensely.

Also, the Ikaruga port on the Gamecube was horrible. DC port was arcade-perfect, as was the case with many arcade-to-home titles.

It is worth $40. You might find a better deal on Craigslist or ebay. And fair warning, Time Stalkers sucks horribly.

Must get games:

both Sonic Adventures

both Crazy Taxis

Grandia 2

Skies of Arcadia

Samba de Amigo

If you like arcade games, most of Segas arcade games were ported to the DC.

I see it as a decent pick up today. I would jump on the deal but many worthy games received ports on the other consoles that washed over the Dreamcast. Gamecube got Sonic Adventure games and Skies of Arcadia.

[QUOTE="Zwei_Thanatos"]it was pretty god what are u talking about it was the same voices from part 1kemar7856
No. If Shenmue's voice-acting was "god" (I assume you meant to type "good") then Time Crisis 2's acting is Oscar-winning material.

Devil May Cry? Final Fantasy X? Resident Evil? Take any horribly-acted game and you've got yourself a contender for Shenmue's voice-overs.

theres good games on it

most was ported to xbox or gc or ps2

crazy taxi-good but ported to gc

sonic adventure 1/2 -also ported to gc but good dc titles

jet grind radio-ported to gba also there was a jet set radio future on xbox1

sega gt -got an updated version 2 of them on xbox

gta 2-good dc game was on ps1 but it looks better on dc/pc

test drive 6-a good racing game also on ps1 but with infererior graphics

shadowman another good title which is widely available on n64ps1

tony hawk 2-another good dc game but guess what it also is on n64 ps1 and even xbox

dave mira bmx

ecw hardcore revolution-ok wrestling and is the only wrestling game on dc

spirit of speed- its ok , but i wouldnt recommend it unless you find it very cheap , at pawns

house of the dead 2/3 good dc games but wouldnt you know it got remade on the wii,and has a 4th game in the works coming to wii

ps0-no one plays it ne more , but was a ok game from what i read also been ported to xbox and gc and ps2 phantasy star universe is on 360

mortal kombat gold if you like fighting this game hasnt been ported at all, and is exclusive to dc if you mind buying old games that are ported you shouldnt get dc

but if not go ahead
