Talk all things dreamcast!

I just got back into playing some Grandia 2; as my Gaming PCs PSU has broken; I will be playing nothing but Dreamcast for around 4 days until the new one arrives.

grandia 2

should I buy a gameshark? Which version? Should I buy a mic for seaman?another VMU? vmu batteries? SO many things to talk about.

Also bonus points for talking about dreamcast peripherals or favorite Dreamcast game.

If you don't have the mic for Seaman, definitely get one.

Batteries are only needed by the VMUs if you plan on using them independently of the console. Since mine just stay in the controller I've never bothered to replace them (one of my VMUs even still has the little plastic strip).

My absolute favorite game on the Dreamcast is Crazy Taxi.

There are tons of cheat CDs for the dreamcast, so whichever you buy is up to you. You can still get some downloadable stuff I think. Just hunt and peck and you should be fine. Never played seaman so tell me about it when you get into it.

I just bought a DC, but I don't have a controller or any games yet, so I don't have much to say. I like how the console looks though, lol.

Dreamcast is a great system, and a ruined opportunity. I felt it had enough presence to try and stay in the market a little longer, but oh well. As for Seaman, I SOOOOO want to play that game. After watching the hilarious Classic Game Room review of it on YouTube, I want to torture a fish-man! But that microphone is rare and pricey from what I remember last time I went to look for one on Ebay. House of the Dead 2 is a must-have if you can get a light-gun. I love 70s and 80s expoitation and splatterfest horror movies. And this game is a total homage to them. Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm is a great 3D, 3rd peson action/fantasy game that sprinkles a little RPG-elements in there. One of the best games on the Dreamcast, and one of the best looking games. Marvel vs. Capcom is 2D fighting-game perfection, and the Dreamcast version is the best home-version. Maken X is a unique action game that was a ton of fun. Resident Evil: Code Veronica was released originally for the Dreamcast and is one of the greatest RE games ever made. It also has the best version of many multiplatform greats such as Spider-Man, Vigilante 8 2nd Offense, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 3, MDK, and others. And anyone here like online gaming on your consoles? Because the Dreamcast popularized that on consoles with hits like Phantasy Star Online, Quake III: Arena, Powerstone, and Unreal Tournament. You likely wouldn't be playing Halo 3, Gears of War, or Call of Duty (at least on consoles) without those successes. They'd likely be PC only releases like they used to do with online gaming. And the VMUs just looks so freaking cool. I wish they had more functionality, though. They look like you can take games on the go. I know you can if you own certain Dreamcast games, but there's not many. They should have released little mini downloadable games on it. Stuff like Snake, Solitaire, Centipede, Pac-Man, etc.

DC is one of my favourite gaming systems EVER... i was a Sega fan, but the game that drove me to the Dreamcast was RE: CV... i still play it a lot, and it's funny but next game in the line is... Grandia II LOL

There are great games in the system, i felt Sega GT was great for those days standards, Headhunter was amazing, Sonic Adventures (both of them), MSR, Shenmue (both), Project Justice (Rival Schools 2), Grandia II, Virtua Tennis (both)... there are so many of them...

A great system with a sad story... if you search well enough there are still games beeing developed and free, many places to buy games from, etc etc... it's not quite dead, if you know what i mean...

There were always a couple things that I just never understood about the DC. First, I want to know why they chose not to use DVD. It just seemed to limit the console in many ways, and I doubt it would've died out if they used it. Secondly, why the hell didn't they add a second analog stick? Every other console after the PS1 did, but they chose not too, just a weird decision to me. Same with leaving out rumble. Cool console, but sega, even during the genesis years, seemed to have really idiotic console features that sort of shot themselves in the foot.

I think the main reason for not including DVD support was the price of DVD players at the time, you have to remember that sega was not a huge company like sony, they were probably the world's 2nd biggest game developers , but they were not sony, and I think they just couldn't afford the production costs of the DVDs and the DVD players, coupled with the fact that most games at the time didn't even fill a standard CD, let alone a DVD. though yes, it probably would have been better if it had a DVD player. and as for the controller the dreamcast controller was based off the Saturn's 3D controller, the problem with that, is that the 3D controller came out in 1996 , and was adequate for the time, by 1998-99, it was outdated considering the PS1 had the dual sticks.

I think the gamecube did not use DVDs for a similar reason, as Nintendo does not have the massive funds sony and microsoft had.

They did use DVDs, but they were in a different format on Wii and GC so that they didn't pay the liscensing fees. That is what the DC should've done.

the gamecube does not use DVDs, a gamecube disc can hold 1.5 GB, as opposed to a DVD which can hold 4.7 GB at least.

the production costs would have been alot lower still, due to the smaller size and capacity.

Maybe, though probably not much by the end of the generation since normal DVDs were so readily available.

thats true , though you have to remember that 1998-99 DVDs were extremely expensive, I think Sega tried to create a format that would hold more data then a CD , but not cost as much as a DVD, the result was the GD-ROM, which can hold 1GB of data, and that was the DC's format, kind of like what Nintendo did with the gamecube format, only I think Nintendo had the benefit of a few years to let storage technology get a little better. apparently ,Sega wanted to use the DVD format for the DC, but it was just to expensive at the time, and they eventually dropped the plan.

The Dreamcast was in development since prior to Sony introducing the Dual Analog (precursor to the DualShock), and released long before this controller design had really proven itself. Most PS1 that supported it at all only used the left analog stick. In fact other than Ape Escape (which came out a year after the Dreamcast) the only thing I remember using the right analog stick for was gas/break in driving games, with the Dreamcast's analog triggers working even better for this.

sega probably felt that the Saturn 3D controller was good enough and could be used, though in my opnion the saturn's 3D controller was more comfortable, they are very similar.

the Saturn controller does have triggers exactly like the DC ones , though for some stupid reason the DC has 2 less buttons.

The dreamcast has the BEST lineup of arcade style games on any console. I'm considering buying the official dreamcast arcade stick, but does anyone happen to have experience with it? The dreamcast controller is pretty terrible with fighters, though the d-pad is decent.

ThePerro

The best after the Saturn one.

The Dreamcast did not have a single 2D side-scrolling action game for example. And some of the best companies either weren't around anymore to support it or did not want to.

in all honesty the standard Saturn pad (the japanese design) , is better in my opinion, due to it being more comfortable, but for some games like racing games and 3D platformers, the 3D controller is almost a must

There really isn't a 2D controller I like. They're all just small and Dpads make my thumbs cramp up after a while. I'd say that Saturn had the best pad though.

I think on of the reasons I love the dreamcast so much is that there were so many unpopular-yet-great games.

even today I could just buy any random game and play for hours!

Also: Sega Genesis controller is the best 2D controller

I wish my DC still worked properly. Oh how I miss Sonic Adventure, House of the Dead 2 (had the gun controllers to boot!), Worms Armageddon, Crazy Taxi, and Sega Rally.
