It's official, the reviews are in, and it's worse than I had imagined. Even a direct port of the original would have been better, apparently. Kevin VanOrd absolutely eviscerates Duke Nukem Forever, and he's not alone.

So please, feel free to respond with your thoughts.

  • Surprised?
  • Not surprised?
  • Will it still sell?
  • Will it have a sequel?
  • Is Randy Pitchford, lovable as he may be, redeemable, or the next Peter Molyneaux?

At least I have a passable Alice: Madness Returns to sate my nostalgia.

Happy gaming,

Boz

Okay, speaking as someone who has long gotten over the FPS genre and wasn't likely to buy this game in the first place, I'm just curious what expectations were from the players. My understanding was that Gearbox took all of the 3D Realms design documents, and right down to the letter, made the exact game that was supposed to come out in the late 90s, complete with late 90s FPS sensibilities, disregarding entirely the context of the genre today. In that light, it seems more like a remake of a theoretical late 90s game that serves the dual purpose of re-establishing the brand so that it can continue in true current-gen form with Gearbox at the helm. Just my $.02 as always...

Haha From the start I didnt think this game would be that good. Was expecting a 6 /10... but a 3? xD Omg... such a low score for a game 12 years in development. MW3 will get a 9 again right?

Gamespot is known to be a tough reviewer. There are only seven scores of 10 in the database. Based on some of the footage in the past couple weeks, particularly the sophomoric cringe-worthy opening scenes, I'm not surprised, just disappointed. Boz

Ouch... guess that's it for Duke... it's odd really -- I mean it's not like Gearbox can't pull off a great shooter...

Can't say I'm surprised. Saw some gameplay of it and it looked awful. After being in development for all those years, it's hard to imagine it not turning out to be an utter disaster.

Not really. They were working with something that was way out of date. The only way they could have made it work in this day and age would have been to scrap what they had and start from scratch again. And even then it still probably wouldn't have been what everyone was wanting. The game was doomed ages ago.

Wow how very disappointing both for Duke and Gearbox. I was eyeing a copy today in the store for a little cheaper then the usual price, $54, but I decided to take a pass on it. I certainly wasn't expecting a 10 or 9 on it and realise that it was already going to be an antiquated game but from the sound of it it turned out very bad. A shame as I was really looking forward to it. I'll probably get it when it hits the bargain bin.

This doesn't really surprise me considering that the reviews on Metacritic have been pouring in for about a week now. It's still a little sad, but not all that surprising considering how old the source material was and that they clearly weren't going to update it. A 1980-90's macho/action hero stereotype as comedy isn't going to translate well to the modern day without some revisions. I think the 12 years of coming and goings of console generations didn't help anything either.

Lol. Who is honestly surprised by this?

I always said this was either going to be the most epic game, or the biggest flop in history. And with an average score of less than 5.0 it is the latter.

Yahtzee said it best "... that Duke Nuken Forever isnt an utterly generic brown FPS that any competent developer could have farted out in a year or two."

The scores are so bad Im loling.

Why are people expecting DNF to be revolutionary and innovative? I don't think it's trying to be something it is not. Just Duke Nukem. Seriously, what were people expecting? I'm having a blast. It's a good game. Not perfect, but fun.

If they do make a new Duke game in the future, hopefully they'll look at Bulletstorm for inspiration.

i think its hilarious. its pure 100% irony in its elemental state. 15 years of waiting, hyping and anticipation, and we get a really bad game!

well, since gearbox has the rights to duke now i guess, maybe if they do a sequel (and thats a supermassive blackhole of an "if") they can do it right. i mean they didnt design the game from the get-go. they just took the 75% of the game that was already completed finished the rest of it and got it out the door. imagine what a duke game would be like if they had made it from the start.

Its a pretty harsh review, game's more of a 5-6\10. Yeah its clunky and the console elements are really annoying but I honestly find it to be a ton of fun. It was great playing with most of the old weaponry again and Duke's constant quips had me giggling the whole time, the gunfights were also really fun and had that old school feeling to it (in a way). While its definitely not the kind of game I'd urge everyone to immediately buy on day 1, its definitely the kind of game thats worth getting during a steam sale or store special.

I'm laughing way harder than I should.

My friend would get mad at me all year because I said Skyrim looked good, and He'd say "Duke Nukem is going to beat Skyrim into the ground."

We'll see friend. We'll see.

It's really not 3.0/3.5 bad. Granted it isn't anything amazing either but I don't think it's deserving of this much hate. Remember ppl what we ended up with technically hadn'tactually been in development for fourteen years, it was like the 3rd build. Either way I'm looking fwd to seeing what Gearbox do with the licence in the future.

To be honest, I just started playing this last night and it's exactly what I thought it would be - a vision that came to life all those years ago and stayed faithful to that vision from start to finish. I don't think it was Gearbox's fault, in any case, since they were trying to get this game finished and released. Does it deserve all the hate? I won't know that until I beat it...then again, maybe I should have passed up all of my store credit for it and used it for a game like L.A. Noire or something...

I'm not sure anyone expected it to be revolutionary so much as faithful to the original: Crude humor, entertaining enemies, great boss fights, innovative weapons, and fun multiplayer.

I had not realized that Gearbox literally took the game that had been built over the past 10 years: Of course it was going to be awful! For some reason I had been under the impression that Gearbox had just bought the intellectual property, not the actual game.

That thing needed to be scrapped and a new game built using an existing graphics engine like the Unreal or CryEngine.

Hey, they own it now, so maybe we'll see a decent sequel in a few years.

Happy gaming,

Boz

The problem that DNF have is that it does not fit into the mold of other FPS so it get a reduce score.

Lol It's trying to be like Duke Nukem and fails miserably. That you're having a lot of fun says more about your standards then the quality of the game tbh.

And blowing baddies with a shotgun is fun, yes. But only with the shotgun and only when there are enemies to fight (which is way too rare for a Duke game). I don't understand why some people just cannot comprehend why this game sucks.

A little bit surprised. I thought it would be a 4.0 :P Btw, talking about the game itself, it does look outdated.

Not surprised by the scores. As soon as they started boasting how the game was going strictly old school with some semi-modern touches I knew this game would be dragged through the mud. Still doesn't prevented me from picking it up and enjoying it.

LOL at people bashing the game without playing it.

And no, my standards are fine. Actually, I have high standards. I'm a hermit after all  People need to learn that reviewer opinions aren't facts and should at least play it before attempting to bash it. Not saying its the most revolutionary thing to ever happen to FPSes, but its a solid breakaway from CoD and Halo clones we've gotten these days. Then again, I forget a majority of this board started gaming this gen.

Oh now, come on, you've never formulated an opinion without first-hand experience? I can tell you all about video cards I've never had installed, cars I've never driven, televisions I've never watched, and speakers I've never heard with references to research and experience conducted by reputable third-parties as well as my own knowledge about how such things operate. You do not have to be a first-hand user to form an opinion about something. I've never owned a Ford Mustang 302 Boss, but it's an awesome car and I might recommend it to the right person. I don't own an NVIDIA HD6850, but it's a great card for budget gamers that I might recommend. You get the idea. Professional game reviews alongside live game video provide sufficient information to formulate an opinion. I haven't played DNF either, but if anyone asked what I thought I'd tell them that, from everything I've seen, it's terrible. Boz

I would have gotten this game regardless of what reviewers thought about it if it played like Duke Nukem. But Gearbox lost my support as soon as I read that there's a 2 weapons limit and regenerating health.

Oh well, we'll have our badass old school FPS at the end of this year with Serious Sam 3.

It IS Duke Nukem.. :? Explain to me in your magical world how it is NOT like Duke Nukem aside from regenerating health and two-weapon limit? It's still Duke Nukem fun with crude humor. If my standards are low, then by golly, I should quit gaming now.. because I don't play awesome games. /sarcasm My standards are actually really high, and I'm picky as hell. But I'm not stupid enough to listen 100% to critics when making a buying decision. As a matter of fact, I don't listen to critic reviews at all. I love how people come out and say a game is bad but they never played it. That's a baseless opinion. DNF is fun and it's sad that you walk off the cliff like lemmings just because some critics say the game is "bad." Every person I've run into in multiplayer online love this game and enjoy it very much.. so I guess they ALL have bad taste and low standards too. Wayta go champ. You are the "be it all" decision maker for every gamer in the entire universe.

yeah, people's opinions don't make sense at all. people giving DNF these horrible scores are sometimes the same people that are giving call of duty games extremely high scores. so idk if they are looking an innovation in games anymore. eh. doesnt matter anyways, at least people's opinions dont really mean much to me.

Wanting to see what all the fuss was about I downloaded the demo yesterday and it's hilariously bad. In fact it's so bad that once DNF is at the bottom of the bargain bins, I have a few pounds to spare and I'm desperately short of other entertainment options I may purchase the whole game - if only to see whether the same level of laugh out loud cruddiness is maintained throughout.

Personally i love the game and think its quite fun. I would give it a 7 or 8 out of ten. No way is it a 3.5... I dont know what everyone was expecting this to be lol. Just cause it doesnt look or play like gears of war or call of duty doesnt mean it is a bad game... or battlefield i guess lol. People tend to take games way to seriously i think. Take the game for what it is and have fun with it!
