Electronic Arts has seemingly been caught utilizing automated bots in order to support a boycott campaign pertaining to one of their titles.

The campaign against EA is due to the company approving a same-sex romance story in BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. A Reddit user managed to view the support it was receiving and it seems the publisher and BioWare's parent company are taking the matter into their own hands.

Likely for media attention... lol

This is funny because not a month ago they were caught hiring people to troll videogame forums.

like a comment in your link asks: "Can someone explain to me what evidence there is to support the claim that it's EA using automated bots?". they are not the only ones with a motive or opportunity to do this.

same goes for the trolling of video game forums. as far as i know there was one forum post on a board that is not very well known for even being serious about much of anything, that claimed EA hires peoples to do this. haven't seen any proof or even a name of the one who claimed this.

not buying into these unsubstantiated "facts" and not replicating them is the best way to deal with stuff like this as far as i'm concerned.

There are plenty of viral marketers, especially on sites like this one. You'd have to either be an idiot or or one of them not to notice.

I'm pretty sure that zero investigation went on with that article and it's probably the least informative article i've ever clicked on. I can easily say "EA digs up corpses, attaches MOCAP sensors to them and tosses them down stairs" and provide no evidence to back up this statement just like that article did.

I clicked on it and it has people from different countries saying the same thing...as if copy and pasting or quoting was never heard of before. It also pointed out that a spanish speaking person had bad grammar...that almost never happens on the internet. If that is undeniable proof that a corporation had to waste time creating bots to stick up for something that shouldn't be a big deal anways...well then good for them. I mean the whole argument is about two random make believe characters of the same sex having a relationship. big f@#$%ing deal.

I have to be honest here...I don't see what the issue with automated bots is. Is there something I am missing here?

Agreed, all companies do whatever they can to sell a product. From Activision to EA to Sony to Microsoft.

You don't see the issue with that someone puts up a campaign of some sort and then uses bots to give the impression of that there's a lot of people that support it? That's like doing a name lists, like a petition, and write all the signatures yourself.

It's pretty common bot behaviour, same message from loads of people from different and less likely countries. There's Mikes and Nicks from North Korea for godsake. I don't see why you are behaving like an apologist.

So, you need EA/Bioware to come out and admit their guilt? Come on dude, they have a history with this kind of stuff. Fake customer reviews at metacritic and the dante's inferno PR gig. I guess we need proof that stands up in a real life court nowadays on teh internetz.

I knew there couldn't be that many people just tickled pink about on disc DLC and online passes...and a possible download only future, and who think EA has done anything with Madden in 6 years.

To everyone asking for proof: EA's whole response to the ME3 controversy has been something along the lines of "everyone loves this game, the only people complaining are a noisy minority of people who haven't played the game who are angry about the gay romances". So already they have a history of trying to deflect criticisms by claiming they're advancing gay rights and that all the naysayers are homophobes who have no legitimate complaint about the game. Recently EA got voted worst company in America by an online poll in The Consumerist, and not much later someone claiming to work for EA said that we should expect to see some damage control from EA along the lines of "we only got voted worst company because of gay bashing homophobes who hate the gay romances in ME3". And then what do you know, not even a week later there's a petition up on a gay advocacy website asking people to give their support to EA as a way to defeat gay bashing homophobes who voted them worst company because of the gay romances in ME3. And by the time it was discovered it had already somehow amassed tens of thousands of signatures, all coming from people saying the same handful of phrases with American names despite all being from virtually every country on Earth. And even more oddly, all of these identical comments from "John from Pakistan" or "Rachel from Zimbabwe" come within minutes or even seconds of each other, and don't stop flooding in. Even more proof it was bot spam (as if anyone who knows what a bot is needs anymore proof than this) recently came from the site itself which said it deleted "tens of thousands" of signatures on the petition because they were made by bots. Now it is true that we can't prove it's EA behind the petition and bots, but putting together a botnet and a fake, well made petition with writing that sounds like it's straight out of the EA marketing department would be an insane amount of effort for some random guy (or group) to do just to troll EA. On top of that, consider that EA hasn't said anything about this, which you think they would if the petition that's generating such massive controversy isn't their's. And then finally consider that this would be very normal behavior for EA as they've been known to do stuff very similar to this in the past. And for what it's worth, someone recently asked on a tech forum why their Origin client was sending traffic to the very gay advocacy website the petition is located at, complete with logs and program analysis as proof. I haven't kept up with that though and it could very well have been proven fake, but that would explain where EA got its botnet from.

Is there any concrete proof that they were behind this, or is it all just conjecture? I've heard about this before, but I don't think there was anything to suggest they were behind it.

It would, but that isn't out of the ordinary on the Web. Massive troll campaigns are quite common.

You must not travel that often. I'm in the UAE and I know a chinese waitress named Jennifer, a Pakistani Waiter named Harry and a Philipino driver named Jim...I guess they are all bots.

Even if they were bots, you don't think any of the gamers on internet would be childish enough to set up bots themselves? Seriously? Come on now. Seriously?

Hm... Wonder if Origin's tracking software had anything to do with that. Might be that someone else visited that petition through that computer causing the client to establish a connection of sorts with it. I'm not tech-savvy enough to know if that's possible, though.

Interesting that the client would do that, either way.
