I'm not much of a sports game player, but there is something about some EA Sports games that has always bothered me, and that is the only way to have a "normal" game score is to play with the shortened periods that are usually the default settings. If you play a full-length game (and in some of the old games at least, the timer still ran fast anyway), you generally end up with unrealistic scores. I don't know if the games are deliberately weighted towards scoring points to make them feel more exciting, or if it's just hard for them to nail down defense right, but this is something that has always bothered me on occasion that I play a sports game.
I should add that I have not played EA Sports games in a while, so I don't know if they ever made any effort to address this, but I just recently happened to glimpse a review for the new Madden game where it was said that the game was very much like the real thing, and it made me think of how none of their contact sports games that are played with a timer have ever been realistic in regards to how quickly points are scored. I get that not everyone wants to sit down and play a game that is over an hour long every time they play a sports game, but surely they could at least have different settings to accomodate those people who really want the game to be as much of a simulation as possible.
