No I'm not making that up. Microsoft have patented a system that does just that. Words fail me so here's the article to look at (followed by a firm face palm): linky link.

Achievements for sitting on your ass watching TV and holding products up, and I thought the games that give you achievements for hitting the start button on the main menu were bad.
Television joining things like newspapers, desperately trying to cling to life when its been obsolete for years.
gamespot already does this sort of thing. we get achievements for watching E3 conferences and other passive activities that aren't really achievements. and really, both seem about as pointless as getting achievements for completing a tutorial (or, my favorite, hitting the right bumper in dragon age ii).
yay, achievements/trophies.
You better hope it's not Mulholland Drive*shakes head*
The gamification of watching TV finally happened. I was joking about it when achievements on consoles came out and now it looks to be a reality. I feel like I'm in a weird David Lynch movie.Â

Dear Lord! (<--- And this comes from an atheist) What exactly is Microsoft trying to do with the Next Console Generation? Trying to reach Oblivion as fast as possible? xD
That strikes me as a massive misreading of the market. Gamers are competitive. Set a goal and many gamers feel a need to hurdle it (I confess I don't care much for achievements and trophies). People who watch tv aren't. Rewards for people for holding up bags of Doritos during commercials or watching 12 hours of tv in a row or even watching a particular show (We swear if you watch out struggling show on the verge of cancellation we will give you a thousand achievement points!) aren't going to change viewing habits.
