I know, very bold statement. But I've just been thinking about all this 3D hype, and how it's being incorporated into gaming... is this what the future of gaming really is? The way I see it, 3D is completely irrelevant to gaming, and that may be very ignorant for me to say, but from seeing various people watching 3D with their glasses...honestly, it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Just thinking, is gaming really gonna be heavily involved with 3D only, hence saying goodbye to what makes a video game what it is?

it is to my understanding that you need glasses to game on the ol' big screen tv in the living room, no? don't see why you couldn't just..... take 'em off and stay in this era. o.o;

Its actually a bit of a shame that eevything has to be "the thing". I might miss the vidoe games in 2D, but then again I could always break out myold system and play those I guess. At least it hasn't permeated the entire industry.

Thankfully the introduction of new tech is gradual and there is still a lot of gamers not interested in the motion or 3D. I think we have a lot more time in this "era" of gaming left if the aspects of this era ever completely go away.

I think your statement is partially correct in that we are beginning a transitional phase into the next format for games.

I can't believe you said that 3D is completely irrelevant to gaming tho. IMO any technology that adds depth to a 2D screen can only add to a game if done right. Imagine if the same was said about the shift from 2D to "virtual" 3D back when games like Wolfenstein were pushing the genre forward. Also I'm sure people used to think I looked stupid with my Commodore 64 blackjack game .... actually I remember many people asking why I didn't just crack opena deck of cards. Besides which headsets look stupid but a lot of gamers choose to wear them and communicate when gaming. :)

The most important thing is that the games they release utilise the technology to make a better gaming experience and not just use it for the sake of a gimmick. I have faith that the current breed of developers will do just that. Sure you'll always have your gimmick games, movie games, and bad ports but the current culture in gamers (one's that read this site anyway) is that a good game is always better than a technically advanced game.

I don't think this is a Power glove, Virtual Boy or some sort of gimmick that will pass. I think it'sa potentially awesome expansion to the genre.

EDIT : Another thing to consider is that this new move requires a significant hardware investment by gamers (aside from the console itself). As a result I thinkyou'll see a much more gradual shift to the new type of games with 3D being an optional component for some time. It's not like previous installments where you just bought a new console and, voila, you're good to go.

You took the words right out of my mouth. That is precisely what I look forward to ;)

I don't think it's anything drastic, gaming is booming now more than ever before. And no, not just the 3D type of gaming.

I don't even understand the argument that optional 3D viewing is somehow going to somehow ruin games. I mean, it literally makes no sense to me at all. Games have already been in "3D" for years in terms of how they are rendered. They just haven't been on displays capable of showing depth.

I can't see in 3D, so unless any new technology also comes with eyecorrecting surgery, I hope not everything will be in mandatory 3D technology. As long as they make a normal version of the game, we'll be cool I guess.

Wouldn't you just see a 3D game the way you see a 2D game then? I mean, it's not like it really affects the gameplay. It might make it easier to gauge distances, but that doesn't really change what a game is.

Well, if it's normal like other games, then sure, i would just see it in 2D plain like always. I'm talking about the annoying Blue/red kind or the kind you'd need to wear glasses for. I would only see a dark mess and that makes it really hard to play, almost impossible.

Oh, I don't think that really has anything to do with your inability to see 3D. :P

Could be, but if that's how everyone sees 3D, then I wonder why it was invented (the 3D technology obviously, not the ability to see 3D).

That 3D doesn't work for **** except for line drawings using only the colors red and blue, as far as I'm concerned, because it is then that each lens can truly block out the half that only the other eye is supposed to see. I haven't actually seen any full movies that way, but in general it seems pretty useless and is mostly just annoying since obviously the color of everything is wrong and both eyes are seeing different colors. That's not the same thing as other 3D display methods at all.

From what I've seen at E3, I don't think 3D will hit it off any time soon. In any case, I'm sure they'll find a way to add it as an additional feature to 2D (maybe change in options menu?), but I can't see 3D becoming mandatory, especially when people don't have several thousand to spend on a 3D TV.

Really? How do you explain the 3d monitors, 3d laptops and Nvidia 3D Vision then?

Just to name a few games that can be viewed on PC in 3D (straight from the Nvidia 3D Vision website)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Biohazard 5
Lost Planet 2
Metro 2033: The Last Refuge
Supersonic Sled DemoBatman: Arkham Asylum
Just Cause 2
Mafia II
Resident Evil 5
Stone Giant

Sorry mate, but 3D is spreading to all forms of visual entertainment. Just the other day I went to see a V8 supercar race and it even that was in 3D!!! Imagine that?! Live entertainment in 3D?! lol

I think compared to expectations, motion and 3D are going to be lame duck technologies, since we gamers by nature are drawn to comfort and convenience. Motion will be held down by a good population of gamers out there who just want to sit back and relax while they game. 3D may take off eventually, but only when full TVs are capable of doing what the 3DS screen does, while also being cost-effective.

Yeah the transition period for new technology is SLOW. Considering that we are just now moving into the "wireless" world of gaming. I would rather see new mobile tech being developed.

Nintendo has done an outstanding job of introducing new ways to play games and I wish more developers would start taking the same level of chances that they have.

I don't see what the big deal is tbh. Games are already in 3D?

People probably said "its the end of gaming" when they swtiched from 2D bitmaps to proper rendered 3D graphics. People always fear change.

it does seem the 3D thing is getting a little out of hand, and hope if it does spread to all games that they will still sell the reg 2D version.

Regarding the discussion of optional vs forced 3D have a look at the 3DS. It has a switch on the unit so you can turn 3D on or off. Seems a pretty good idea to me, especially with stereoscopic 3D only being viewable by 90% of people (or something like that).

I doubt this gimmik will cause people to go "OH MY GOD! I AM NEVER PLAYING NON 3D GAMES EVER AGAIN!!" It's just gimmik to sell some games. It's a FAD thatwill pass.

3D Glasses and video games aren't anew thing. Bout tenyears ago the PC supported it but not very many games did and the equipment was far too costly.

3D I can deal with. I dont see it affecting games all that much. Its just like the SD-HD transition.

Motion controls are what I'm worried about. I hope they're not mandatory with future consoles.

It wont eliminate non-3D games. It will simply be and option. Why?? Well, firstly 3DTVs will have to become the norm which I don't see happening. Secondly, headaches from watching 3D is actually very, very common and I dont see game developers alienating such a large portion of the population. Its all about the money and pure 3D gaming does not make any financial sense.

That is different from what Daavpuke originally said, which is simply that he cannot view 3D. Anyway, what I want to know is specifically how 3D is going to change game design in such a way that it is required to have the 3D on to play the game.

Nah. Video game companies ain't that dumb. They know that many true gamers don't want 3D. But if 3D comes up in vid games, not exactly what you call end, but annoying kids will replace us.

EDIT: What I'm most annoyed about is the RED-BLUE glass.

MigsPlusEight

Well I just can't wait until virtual reality sets (like the kind that are like a cage-ball you walk around in) are incorporated into video gaming! I'll be like 51 years old and GTA 17 would have come out and it'll be in virtual reality I'll be on it for like 12 hours straight XD
