And why are the contenders for best FPS of all only Crysis and Half Life 2?
Besides, Far Cry is better than Crysis... which I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, but whatever.
Because Far Cry has nowhere near the 96 on MC as Half-life http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/half-life-2 and also these are the only two games constantly regarded as best FPS of all time on Gamespot. Oh so we're playing the popularity game, not an actual discussion on our personal favorite FPS titles? If we're having a metacritic debate not only will it be A) Completely boring but also... well no boring works. Crysis has a 91 on metacritic, Half Life 2 has a 96. There's your answer according to your criteria.
Far Cry has an 89 on meta, btw, a whopping 2 points below Crysis. IMO the only thing Crysis has on Far Cry is superior visuals, but Far Cry had a much more memorable campaign and better multiplayer.
Crysis has visuals and nothing more. As a game itself it's not particularly great. Some neat mechanics and level design but it gets boring fast without pretty mods to stare at. It's story is extremely weak too.
Crysis is really overrated. Good, but overrated. And Half Life 2 has been topped... by Half Life 2: Episode II. Other than that it's still on top.
Talk about a can of worms!
Personally, neither of those games would make my list of top 5 first person shooters, but it's all subjective in the end.
half life 2 best fps? lol its not even better than the first half lifecampzor
Half-life better than Half-life 2? lol, it is not better than Half-life 2
I prefer Far Cry 1 over Crysis (though Crysis is still a fantastic game that has alot going for it other than graphics)
But I prefer Half Life 2. Honestly one of the best shooters ever made
Crysis is easily one of the best FPS this gen, but even though Crysis does some things better than HL2, Half-Life 2 is the better overall game.
Half Life 2 was revolutionary in so many ways when it came out. The graphics and physics among other things were amazing but the levels were so tedious and boring to play through, just the boat levels took like 3 hours to get through and the driving levels at least that. Ravenholm and the late game was fun though.
I just played through the game again 2 weeks ago and found myself bored through nearly the entire thing. I can still play Half Life 1 anytimie and not get bored.
HL2 was the most innovative sure, but as a game it doesn't stand up that well anymore imo.
I agree. I don't know what is so special about crysis.Crysis is really overrated. Good, but overrated. And Half Life 2 has been topped... by Half Life 2: Episode II. Other than that it's still on top.

I think HL1 and 2 are best FPS' of all time, I think I like HL1 better though because the shooting's better and the environments are more interesting.
- There is no greatest FPS ever
- HL2 isn't a FPS

Gunplay + Variety in playstyle choices + Environments suited to playstyles + Fantastic AI + Exceptional physics resulting in gunfights all the more intense
You really can't get much better than that (except perhaps FEAR when it comes to gunplay/AI).
HL2 was an amazing journey.
Lots of good FPS out there.
Doom 3 was really good. Rage gunplay felt awesome. Hell I loved gunning schit down in FO3 with the minigun.
R6 Vegas 1 & 2 are heavily underrated shooters. Heavily. Has some of the best FPS "look and feel" ever.
Crysis 2 was a fun romp but wasn't nothin special.

How so?
I see the gunplay as an inevitability rather than the focus. The game constantly introduces you to new elements, therefore you're never doing the same thing for too long. I feel the drive of the game to be the ever-shifting gameplay. Just compare it to HL, whose gameplay (that being solelythe gunplay) remains consistent throughout the game. The variation comes in the setpieces and not the gameplay. HL2 is utterly distinctive in that regard.

I thought to myself "There's no way he can defend this claim of HL2 not being an FPS, he's doomed."
I do actually see your point though, very well said. HL2 includes much more than just shooting, however gunplay is still the central and most prominent element throughout the entire game, despite the shifting and new elements it introduces.
Still, made me a believer, but I have to disagree.

Combat is apart from the gravity gun and the enviromental stuff is uninteresting, vehicles are nightmareish and the difficulty has an odd progression imo. Great game nontheless.Crysis is really overrated. Good, but overrated. And Half Life 2 has been topped... by Half Life 2: Episode II. Other than that it's still on top.

Quite understandable. I only find it vital that people distinguish first-person shooter from merely gunplay inherent in a game within a first-person perspective. System Shock 2 cannot be critiqued under the same terms as Serious Sam. It would be unfair to do the same for HL2.
I think most gamers think Half life 2 is the best shooter of all time, its hard to argue with it, but to me its either that or Halo. And why are the contenders for best FPS of all only Crysis and Half Life 2?

Crysis amazed gamers with its open world gameplay but failed in personality, characters, gunplay, mechanics, and felt shallow.StatusShuffle
