Have you ever played a game that received so much hype, got great reviews, and all together just sounded fantastic, but once you actually started playing it you couldn't see why it was so "great"? For example, I heard Bioshock was an amazing FPS with a great story, however I played halfway through the first one and kept telling myself "alright the graphics are pretty good...i guess. The story is alright...Gameplay is pretty good I guess..." and basically I just couldn't find why it was regarded as such a great game. How about you guys?

Hmm, your topic title and post are kinda different. title: No. I'm cool with admitting that my expectations weren't met or feeling that everyone else is crazy. If a game blows, then it blows. I may force myself to play it for a few hours to give it a fair shot, but I don't force myself to say that I like it. post: Yes, i've been disappointed in games and not understood what everyone likes about it.

Can't say I do. If I don't like something, I don't like it. Period.

I've tried. I've tried to like Half-Life 2, but I just can't. Usually I can find the fun in almost any game.

Nope, if I hate a game, that's it. Whether I spent sixty dollars or three, if it sucks and I don't like it, I'll say so.

Love your sig. To the topic. I give every game a fair shot, but after an hour, I know whether a game is not for me. That's okay though, not every game is for every person, no matter how popular or niche it may be.

I'm highly suspicious of games with a lot of hype. Lower your expectations and lower your disappointment.

Almost the exact same experience I had with that game, except I would give it a rest and put it down for awhile, get other games, and see if I could go back to it later. It never worked.

Same thing with final fantasy, although to a larger extent because I was younger didn't have as much expendable cash for games--so it was a situation where buying 'x' game meant I probably won't be able to buy 'y' game. I'm pretty sure I may have finished ff7, but I though it was tedious, boring, and not much of a game at all.

Kotor!!! Lord almighty. If words could describe the disappointment on this one.

Force myself to like? No. Force myself to play through telling myself the fun will start soon? I used to. I played Suikoden 3 for maybe 15 hours (loved the first two, reviewers stated S3 became really great around the 20 hour mark) then realizes playing games shouldn't be like eating vegetables before desert, it should all be cake.

That isn't to say that I love every second of every game I play through, but if I find myself bored for more than a short period of time, I have no problem trading in a game without beating it.

I would never force myself to like a game. If it sucks, it sucks, and I'm not obligated to like anything.

I basically do that to all games. I made an effort to get it, to buy it with my own money, so I'll be damned if that was money gone wasted.

I never forced myself to play a game, I tend to rent a game before I buy it.

Yup, every "Western RPG" this gen, AKA every shooter masquerading as a once fun genre.

Unfortunately I can't be bothered to force myself to like those games or waste my time investing in PC gaming to get the non shooter-esque RPGs.

Right now i'm forcing myself to like FFXIII. I do like parts of the game it's just that they are ruining tradition for no apparent reason. Got rid of the prelude theme forit and didn't use the Victory Fanfare theme for some reason. Instead they used some other lame little jingle. Very little exploration and holds your hand the whole way. Congrats to the babies who didn't want to spend alittle time grinding to get past a part. Now the game is a cakewalk....and without Nobuo Uematsu composing for it the music is subpar too. XII's music was good w/o him, but this time around they did too many things wrong. At least they kept the Cid tradition alive. I think this in large part due to the past FF teams members having left for the most part. This is why i look forward to XIV more. It is way more traditional and has the things i come to expect in a FF game. For many people XIII was there first FF and i feel bad because this is what they are going to think FF is all about when in reality it doesn't really do the series justice. /rant off

Sometimes I forced myself to like a game and actually ended up loving it! FFXII and Suikoden III comes to mind.

What Carnage said about Suikoden III is pretty true. It doesn't get good until you pass the mundane and boring parts in the beginning. But I ended up really enjoying it. Same with FFXII, like I mentioned.

Sometimes it works and sometimes I just hate it no matter how much I try to get into it. Etrian Odyssey is an example. I wanted to love it but I just couldn't. Which is why SMT Strange Journey intrigued me even though I never got into a MegTen game before. It looked like EO with a actual story! I'm still playing it but I think it'll be far more interesting and fun than EO for sure.

See, the reason that can be a downer is because the mundane and boring parts of the first two games never ended, so we didn't have reason to believe they would in III. The Suikoden games are definitely among those I couldn't bring myself to like, though there are many others.

I tried to force myself to like the demo on God of War 3. Maybe I'll change my mind when I get the game if I don't keep putting it off right now I don't have money for it anyway. I keep telling myself after I get Assassin's Creed 2 I'll get God of War 3 I also said the same thing when I got oblivion that I was going to get God of War 3 after I got Oblivion now it's Assassin's Cred 2. I don't think I've triedto force myself to like a game other than God of War 3 I think I expected too much from it probably and it was the first time I played God of War.
