What about the Havoc Engine? I know there are others, but that's the only one I can think of at the moment.

Havoc is a physics engine. I think you mean the Source engine, which started off as a modified Quake 2 engine.

Unread Engine one and two look the same with just more polygons. I think the real advancement with 3 was how they did all that fancy lighting and reflecting, and just generally making things look more real without just crunching polygons.

What I dont understand is that the character models look thicker than their previous models. Why are they thicker in general? The character models of Gears of War looked like their arms were thicker than their heads. Whys that? This is seriously bugging me, and sort of ruins alot of UE3 built games for me...

It's most likely to make the animation run smoother, no clipping of the shoulders through the arms.

Body building is really popular lately. It's just a new marketing buzz used to sell games to kids. As an 30yo adult who think about having children it bugged me A LOT in GoW that everyone looked like boosted to steroid when we know how bad those things are.

A lot of games feature normal sized characters with good animation.

Yeah, but in previous Unreal games, that was an issue. Which they're rectifying by making it harder to notice.

Wait... so are you saying Half Life 1 (which uses the source engine right?) is based off of a modified quake 2 engine?

It didn't happen in Bioshock, which is an UE3 game. It's most certainly an artistic thing, because Gears of War is about tough, testosterone-filled guys shooting the crap out of aliens and pretty much anything else that moves.

wow, they look awesome, we have come a long way in a short time. and UT3 is the army is it not? or like it some how? well what else do u do in the army besides work out, run and do courses everyday, would you expect someone to look like that? and that guy has to shoot big guns, take bullets and run around without getting tired, would you think a skinny dude would take like 2 bullets, and hold nothing bigger then a rifle, if that. so making them big is a good thing. you prolly think, but wait, the aliens are small, but aliens might have special powers to let them hold things like rocket launchers. so i think what they have done and made him big is a good thing. plus it looks f**king awesome. srsly, who doesn't love using a big guy to take s**t down with huge guns?

Sorry about the stars like **. I'm not to sure if swearing is aloud on the site, and don't wanna get in trouble or my message deleted because of the swearing.

That's fine, I just wish Epic's games didn't look so similar.

When you look back like that you really see the progress that has been made. From memory you cant remember just how BAD stuff used to look.
