Tell me an example of when you think a video game crossed the line. I love video games but I think

Call of duty World at War did this when they showed real footage of atrocities. What if the person viewing this was a family member of the person being murdered.

I really can't think of any. I'm sure there are a few out there that would cross my personal line, but I really can't think of any right now.

We can see far worst in movies or in reality.

The only thing I didn't like to see was in a South Park episode were they showed archive footage of a sex change ... it was something.

Mortal Kombat is a bit too gruesome I think.

It was okay back in the day with bad graphics. But the new fatalities are kinda crazy.

I haven't played a game that crossed the line yet. Pretty weak examples so far in this thread.

I don't remember World at War showing anything graphic... clips you would probably see in a history class or TV. And it is a war game I would hope anyone easily offended by war violence wouldn't play it. Don't mean to focus entirely on your answer I just don't find it a good one.

Anyway, I don't know, I'm not one to get offended by almost anything. MW2 had the airport scene, but I was more offended by the content warnings and ability to skip it. Just found it kinda silly and I shouldn't be asked if something is going to offend me in a video game. I guess South Park: The Stick of Truth is the only game where I thought "huh, I'm kinda surprised some of this was allowed", not that I was actually offended and shouldn't have been too surprised in the first part due to it being, well, South Park.

In all I think there's very little out there that should be considered crossing the line in a way that it probably shouldn't exist by most people's moral standards. I'd say it'd have to go into very deep territory like something along the lines of a rape simulator.

I don't think showing the atrocities was really taking it too far, I get you with the family member thing but by showing it as they did i think the attempt was to bring light to the brutality and to avoid the total desensitization of killing without consequences. I'd like to see it in more games if i'm honest. With future wars probably been fought by guys with controllers in their hands i think things like this will stick in the minds of the people holding them. Got to be a positive.

I think Shinobi on the Sega Master system took it too far by making me spend a full bank holiday weekend trying to finish it and putting an impossible jump at the end instead of a last boss. Still annoyed about that and it was nearly 30 years ago.

@christhefish: Honestly World at War got me very interested in World War II. I was relatively young when I first played it (like 14) so I wasn't fully aware of the scope and deadliness of the war. I distinctly remember the statistic shared at the very end of the some 60 million lives lost during the conflict. I guess the worst perception I can see of this game is some thinking it glorifies war, but I would have to disagree with that. I personally think the real footage stuff was a great touch to the campaign.

So, @sayutaI don't exactly remember the clip in question. At worst I feel like there were clips of people moments before being executed. Maybe there were some dead bodies, I don't know. I understand it being a sensitive subject, but still, the game does revolve around the conflict so I don't see the offensiveness of showing some real glimpses of what the war was actually like.

I remember a reviewer getting ticked off because Command & Conquer: Generals had suicide bombers. He felt using the concept as a game mechanic trivialized the suffering the real-world version caused.

The "No Russian" level was, and still is to some extent, a pretty questionable thing to add to a video game. While I won't call it "tastefully done", I personally think it was done appropriately and when I played it, I felt revolted, disgusted, and horrible. I don't think anyone would play that and feel good about it. It was definitely toeing the line, if not crossing it a bit.

Maybe it's just because I am getting older, but I don't like how the GTA game nonchalantly glorify a lot of things, or make them overly fun, or funny, or entertaining, or lighthearted. GTAV, especially. A lot of it just kind of felt lame, tbh, and a little scary when you think that kids are playing it. I'm not a prude, and I know that's something a prude would say lol, but still...

There's a Japanese game called rapelay that probabily crosses the line.

Not played it myself but know about it, it's about what the title suggests.

Yeah I guess I have. Pretty tasteless, though I'm sure there are plenty of flash games out there like that. I think I remember seeing one about the Sandy Hook shooting.

Splatterhouse had a level called Womb cave in which you're attacked by Sperm monsters. I believe The Binding of Isaac also has some subjective imagery many would think went too far. Lastly, Bloodborne. What you do with umbilical cords, and what Kos fights you with. . .

Sure it's morbid but it fits that horror theme.

Personally don't mind, let creatives be creative, not restricted_

Not sure when a game has ever crossed a line.

It´s a video game nothing else and there are much worse things on the internet and being shown in movies and tv.

'Games' that cross the line tend not to be games at all but programs designed for shock value. Otherwise a real game has story/gameplay/visuals to fall back on and can feel perfectly at ease with pushing the envelope once in a while.

It's also necessary to find out what works or sells and what doesn't. Think of those moments as experiments.

I've never seen a game that has crossed the line for me. I don't think I have a line to cross. I'm passionately against censorship in entertainment. As long as it's just fake and appropriately rated then I don't believe anything should be restricted or off-limits.

@RSM-HQ: I thought the umbilical cords were a good way to open the mind to reach the level of those monsters. An umbilical cord probably have stem cells in it so yeah.

so at the end he used what was left to create à copy of a resto.

@clefdefa: I don't know what those references are, but I know of Superman to some extent, and that's pretty messed up.

Almost as messed up as the game Superman 64 :P

Hatred immediately springs to mind. I've never played it nor do I have any desire to. It also seemed to have been a pretty crap game as well so certainly no loss there.

What do you mean by crossing a line? If you don't like something it's not for you, move along. Unless a game has physically hurt someone or made threats to a specific person or group then I don't think it's crossed any line...

Wasn't there a fps called Ethnic Cleansing where you play a klansman and the main bad guy was "Big Nig"? I remember seeing it on the news when I was young.
