I have a question about both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Are both good to play through or is Fallout 3 the better one out of the two games?

I only have Fallout 3 for my Playstation 3 and sometime later this year Ive been thinking about buying New Vegas since Im kind of interested in New Vegas.

I havent played through Fallout 3 since I just started playing the beginning of the game awhile back but havent totally explored etc.

Fallout 3 is an absolute must. If you've got the goty edition all the better.

NV on the other hand lacks the charm and atmosphere of f3 but at least it provides a decent challenge. If you play on hardmore mode on either hard or hardest difficulty you'll be up for a significant challenge - making all the grinding and looting worthwhile and even necessary. And once again, get the goty edition - the dlc is actually not bad. Overall NV is a fairly decent game if you give it a chance.

I love NV, but there is one thing you should know:

NV lacks strong story.

NV has several stories running in tandem. And none of them is particulary good or interesting.

So, whenever I play thru NV, I just play it as open world adventure and pretty much ignore the boring storylines.

Mind you, the main story in F3 was rather dull too. Making water pure? Boring!

So, NV does not have a gripping story that would really pull you in to the game. Apart from that, good game.

I've seen a lot of praise for New Vegas but considering both are a programming mess you're best off playing them on P.C. with as many community fix patches as you can grab.

If you're playing a Bethesda Fallout on PS3? You're gonna have a bad time.

True. PS3 versions of F3 and NV were really unstable. 360 versions are better, although NV on 360 does crash quite often too...

You can avoid some of the crashes by turning off all autosaves. It looks as if consoles tend to freeze when the game is trying to autosave and load at the same time..

Aircraft Carrier (Fallout 3)
Aircraft Carrier (Fallout 3)

I enjoyed both games, but I found Fallout 3's storyline more immersive. I enjoyed exploring Washington D.C. the most. There were so many details about the area that brought you into the "struggle" the wastelanders were experiencing during your mission to find your father. Granted. I wasn't excited about the ending....original and the sudden end to your exploration. Come on! At least the developers fixed their mistake and we were able to continue exploring after that little hiccup. You would have thought someone over at Bioware would have gotten that hint and didn't make the same mistake. One location I enjoyed...and actively sought after was the abandoned aircraft carrier used as a small town/fort.

Too bad they didn't make it! (New Vegas)
Too bad they didn't make it! (New Vegas)

I digress. To continue my response...if you have made it thus far I would like to point out I didn't mind Fallout: New Vegas. My MAJOR issue with this game was the inability to complete the game. We all know about the horrible bugs which plagued the game into endless discussions about unplayability, etc., but it honestly was not that bad of a game. I enjoyed wandering around the desert. Sadly, there was a large presence of open sand (Yes, I am aware Vegas is surrounded by it) which tended to distract me from my overall exploration. The mission, "Come Fly With Me" was my favorite due to the how the mission ended up. I actually thought it admirable; and ironic the ghouls waited all those years to finally fly off into space to have it all end by crashing back to Earth to their deaths.

Hopefully, we will continue to get more Fallout games! Thank you for the memories!

I think New Vegas would have been the better experience if it weren't for all the damn bugs. I can't imagine playing that game on a console. No console commands to fix things.

Keep playing Fallout 3. If you like it, then get New Vegas. I'm a big fan of both games. New Vegas has a very vocal fanbase, so don't get the idea that it's "way better" than Fallout 3 in your head before playing them. It has some minor improved mechanics and better dialogue, but I didn't find its world as interesting as 3. Plus, the game is a technical mess, even compared to 3 which is already pretty buggy and sometimes unstable. If PS3 is your only option, then get ready for New Vegas to crash pretty much every few hours. Fallout 3 isn't as much of a problem on the PS3 until you get to the DLC. By then your save file will be large and it will be crashing every couple of hours as well. But hell, even the PC versions of these games are iffy. I got Fallout 3 to run mostly fine on my Windows 10 PC, but could never get New Vegas to work properly since it just crashes even more than it did on the PS3 for me. Just some things to keep in mind.

I don't like either. Mainly because of the fact they feel clunky to play.

When it comes to game play mechanics, they're about the same to me. I did find the FO3 ruins in the Greater DC area feeling more like disguised corridors which made them feel like a hamster maze rather than free-flow exploration. Walking within that zone felt needlessly repetitive.

I played the PC Steam version of FO3 and the PC GoG version of New Vegas. The Steam game required an xlive.dll file before it became playable while the GoG game didn't require anything else.

FO3 ran fine from start to finish. I'm sure I'm almost done with NV because the major bad guys are dead. I'll finish it eventually. But, other games are distracting me from doing so.
