Okay so I played and finished Fallout 4 and loved it. Should I play Fallout 3? Is it weird to go from 4 to 3? I know they are different but will the gameplay be a downgrade?

4 is a ok game but 3 is definitely the best
That and new Vegas is worth the play.
Yeah I loved both games and I considered 4 to be the best. I think that you'd likely enjoy 3 if you don't mind the graphical downgrade. You might miss a few mechanics that were in 4 though too.
Fallout 3 is fantastic. I highly recommend playing it even though it is last gen. Also give New Vegas a shot.
@kevin4mph:
3 isn't that different from Fallout 4 gameplay-wise but 4 is the overall better experience.
Fallout 3:
1. No voice over for main character.
2. Outdated graphics.
3. More interesting city to explore.
4. Liam Neeson is your dad.
5. Stronger focus on the main storyline.
6. No Dog Meat.
7. Crappier voice actors.
8. The timeline is right before Fallout 4 and you see some key characters that carry over to Fallout 4.
Fallout 3, better yet New Vegas, is the better roleplay experience. But aesthetic and shooting wise, 4 is the superior game for obvious reasons.
this pretty much sums it up.
shame you can't teleport back to 2008 and leave the vault for the first time as that was a pretty memorable moment as far as epic gaming moments go. doubt it'll have anywhere near the same impact nearly ten years on, unless you're on pc and have modded the hell out of the graphics
Fallout 3 - Amazing introduction to the whole 3D world of Fallout as it was the first to actually go third person. Wonky gun play and combat. Amazing humor and fleshed out a bit of choices. The DLCs made this game really replayable.
Fallout New Vegas(Personal favorite) - Has everything Fallout 3 had except it has a better crafting system overall, armor has been reworked(Light, Med, Heavy), comes with a lovely reputation system like the older Fallouts has gambling. The storyline actually made you feel like you mattered in the world. Same wonky gun play. DLC is really good and interesting, provides lovely lore and backstory.
Fallout 4 - Pretty graphics. Story is reverse Fallout 3 imo. Gun play and customization is the best above all the Fallouts except it has no ammo crafting(Can be modded). Dialogue has been toned down hard. Another settlement needs your help.
Just my 2 cents about the games.
@xantufrog:
Well then Dog Meat must've been pretty damn well hidden cuz I sure as hell never found him in Fallout 3. Unless you're talking about the item dog meat. And having no voice over for the main character isn't a bad thing but it sure was refreshing to have it in Fallout 4. It contributed to the immersion.
I can't get through the last few hours of FO4, it's just so repetitive and the story gets boring with little oomph.
FO3 was just the better game, one of the best games ever madei n fact with a superior story and far better characters and "moments".
@killered3: fallout 3 has dogmeat. Also I think the unvoiced character is a good thing. Helps with the blank slate rpg style Bethesda goes for
Yup, Fallout 3 def. has dogmeat, just a slightly different breed than a german sheppard as in 4.
And the unvoiced protagonist is a excellent idea, while it´s ok in 4 , 3 made for better immersion without the voice.
@kevin4mph: Depends on if you can take the graphical downgrade. It's more of an RPG and in my opinion has a better story. Only thing that FO4 did better than 3 or vegas was the combat... it's great, but other things fell to the wayside.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas are fine games but the gameplay can't hold a candle to Fallout 4's. If you can come to grips with that (and how weird the visual's look without ANY cast shadows ANYWHERE) you'll have a good time. I had tons of fun journeying about and discovering stuff in booth 3 and New Vegas. Not sure I can go back after Fallout 4: Survival though. It's just too good.
Fallout 3 really is better than F4...
Now I love F4, but the trouble with it is that it lacks strong stories and strong characters. It's all bit bland, really. And the map can feel bit bland too.
F3 is more focused, and it has more memorable characters, and places in it. It's also more exciting and terrifying. Travelling those metro tunnels all by yourself is really harrowing experience, and F4 did not have anything that scary to offer. Well, perhaps the first time you ventured to Museum of Witchcraft...
Point Lookout and Broken Steel are must DLCs. They add so much good stuff to the game.
3 is the best modern Fallout game. The metro tunnels alone make it the best, not to mention the best expansions and leveling system.
I couldn't get in to 3 for some reason... I preferred 4. Although I didn't finish it.
I have it complete opposite, spent close to 500 hours in Fallout 3 where i just couldn't get into 4 and ran through as fast i could.
500 hours?? Holy sh*t!
I do appreciate that you can mod guns in F4 big way, meaning you can 'build' kick butt weps right from the start of the game.
-and its great weps no longer wear down, which was major issue in F3.
Downside of that is that it makes F4 lot easier. The game is bit too easy now, is the opinion of many Fallout fans.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas (as some have pointed out) are more traditional RPGs where the gameplay in terms of fluid combat and movement is okay, but what really shines are the choices you make for the many different creative quests, unique characters, and many different dialogue options. If you are fine with worse graphics and movement and value actual RPG mechanics over pretty graphics and better movement/combat than those games are not to be missed.
Fallout 4 is just a shooter. Choices hardly mean anything. Voiced protagonist didn't make the game better if your dialogue options are pretty standard. It is now just like Far Cry where you just go somewhere and kill everything for a quest reward or go somewhere and retrieve something (and usually kill everything) for a quest reward. Settlement building is nice but cant really redeem the game from its boring fetch/kill quests which make up most of the game.
Just a damn shooter with prettier graphics and better combat. Seems like the devs forgot what was so cool about 3's creative questing, characters, and dialogue options and didn't take notes from what made New Vegas so unique as well.
Just a damn shooter.
