Its being developed by Obsidian whose members developed the original 2 fallout games, not Bethesda. Its a standalone title not a sequel to Fallout 3:D
From the limited information we have now, It will run on the same engine as FO3 and very likely be a FPS/RPG just like FO3.
The engine has likely been overhauled tho, which in the end is a bit of a letdown for me, the teaser showed off some amazing texture work, and movement, but Since I belive it is CG, I am fairly certain it will loook alit like FO3 (just less broken down).
Combat is as FO3 but enhanced, so VATs is back. However it seems that alot of weapons has special VATS abilities (a golfclub was mentioned, that had the ability to do a "fore" in VATS, hitting them in the groin... get it?? gold...balls... *cheese*). I assume alot of weapons will have some special abilities, also I am fairly certain that you can target the enemy with close combat (different bodyparts) in the new one.
VATS is what ruined Fallout 3. It made combat ridiculously cheap. Being able to stop time to target specific bodyparts is like having an I WIN cheat with the tap of a button. Deathclaw sneak up on you, tap VATS oh looky I can stop time and target its face with my combat shotgun for 3 shots to kill it before it even lands a blow. Lame.
They should've made VATS something that allows you to target specific bodyparts but doesn't slow down or stop all time in the game, enemies should still be allowed to move.
I guess you didn't play (or didn't like) Fallout 1&2 then. I also assume you don't like turn based games cause thats what vats allowed you to do, turn the combat from action to turn base. You weren't forced to use VATS and VATS was only effective if you built a character with VATS based skills and threats. If you didn't make a VATS based character you would have a tough time killed a deathclaw or a albino scorpion with VATS. Also the VATS system had many of the same traits as the turn based combat of the FO 1&2VATS is what ruined Fallout 3. It made combat ridiculously cheap. Here's a rough analogy: Fallout: New Vegas is to Fallout 3 as GTA: Vice City was to GTA 3. It's the same engine and core gameplay with a new story, setting, and other content. Essentially, this is a sequel where they want people to align their expectations with what Fallout 3 offered rather than the order of magnitude higher that people might expect from a Fallout 4. TiberiusGreat analogy and makes sense. The story will be darker according to Obsidian.
If they include nudity it puts New Vegas in danger of being dropped by xbox and ps3. A game thats rated AO (Adults Only) wont make it to the consoles and would only make it to the PC. I was told this by one of my friends who work at Gamestop. I know people who are PC gamers could careless but thats irrelavent. Console games sell better and I doubt thats a market they want to neglect. PS. I dont think nudity makes a game darker. in fact I dont know of a single game that was made better with the addition of nudity.Hopefully its alot darker with more adult elements. I mean they can have slow motion heads exploding courtesy of VATS but they can't show a little bit of nudity ? Ridiculous standards.
