mine has to be the dreamcast controller it has a great joystick, the d pad is the best i used, and overall it has a good feel in your hands and the triggers feel good.

only down side is it does not have dual joysticks but other than that i give it a 9.0

indeed, the d-pad wasn't that great (thats one thing thats better about the Saturn pad, its much better) but the controller was comfy, the button layout was right , and the analog sticks are still some of the best Ive used on any system.

the Mega Drive controller was good, though the 6 button pad is a bit too akward imo .

for fighting games I generally use arcade sticks or fighting game controllers, though for the GC and MD I use the stock controllers, but Im planning to get a PS to GC converter so that I can use my PS1 arcade stick on it.

actually that PS1 arcade stick is really good, I use it for PS2 , PS3 and PC games too (via a USB adapter) and I have an identical one for the Saturn (since Sega's Virtua stick is mediocre in comparison)

Top favorite is the SNES controller, second is the GC controller, third is the NES Max controller. From my speculation, people who use the NES Max either love it or hate it. I love it, it's probably one of the most comfortable NES controllers I've ever used.

The 360 controller is by far #1, then the GC controller. Least favorite is dualshock. To small, and it has awkward analog placement.

Though It's a joystick not a console controller, I liked the Tac-2 controller for the Commodore/Atari computers the most.

Console-wise I like the original Xbox controller because I have big hands. The Analogue Ps2 controller is awesome as well.

I really liked the Viper 2 PS2 controller. It was very comfortable. It was also the only 3rd party controller officially licensed by Sony from what I remember. It even came in four flavors, yellow, purple, blue and one more.

If we're only talking Legacy controllers, I' have to say the Dualshock for ps1 or ps2 (nearly the same controller). the xbox controller is a close 2nd, but having only 2 trigger buttons makes it inferior IMO.

as a big fan of Shmups and Fighters my fave pad has to be the Sega Saturn 2nd type model.. The best controller imo for those types of games if im not using an arcade stick.

PS2 Dual Shock. It crams a lot of functionality into a small space w/o things getting too crowded. I am really taking to like the GameCube controller though. It just feels nice but seems like it'd be awkward for FPSs, though I haven't actually playe one on the Cube. I always really like the orignal Genesis controllers d-pad but it's functionality was limited by three buttons and the six button version always felt a bit awkward.

On a related note, my favorite controller on a handheld is the regular GBA. The screen on the thing was awful but it always felt good in my hands. I use it as a controller for the GBA player rather than GC controller sometimes and I would never do that w/ my SP, even though it is a better model overall.

I really like the Genesis 3-button pad, and the Saturn (model 1) pad, and the Xbox controller S was nice too.

I'd have to say it all depends on what type of game I'm playing. My favorite though would have to be the PS2 dual-shock because of its well-rounded handling with various games. But I am also partial toward the SNES controller.

This:

http://www.amazon.com/MadCatz-8202-PlayStation-2-RetroCon-Controller/dp/B0000DG9SI

beyond all the best PS2 RPG controller I could have ever asked for.

But for "real controllers":

SNES and honestly the atari 2600 sticks. to this day there is just something about those little boxy things that screams "videogame!" to me.

For me it's a tie between The Xbox, Ps2, and Dreamcast controller.

the d pad is the best i used

Jessey-Stone

You're joking, right? The only D-pad I've used that's worse is XBox 360's D-pad. Tell me you've used Genesis, Saturn, SNES, NES, or PS1/PS2 D-pads before. All of those are better. The Dreamcast D-pad isn't nearly as responsive as it should be and just feels stiff. Plus for as advanced of a system as it was, it shoud have had the 8-way d-pad that the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn before it had; rather than the traditional "+" D-pad. The joystick and the button placement were great, though. And I loved the satisfying feel the L & R triggers would give me. They just felt right.

My personal favorite controller is the Dual-Shock for PS1 & PS2. Great D-pad, the joysticks work well, it has a rumble-feature built-in, it's comfortable in your hands, and the button placement is very intuitive. They're also as responsive as they should be.

actually Id say the thing holding the DC controller is the lack of buttons, 6 buttons is not enough , given that previous gen controllers used 8+ buttons. playing Street Fighter on that thing is annoying as heck since you have to use the triggers to execute the moves, hence if one wants to play fighitng games on the DC , a fighting game pad or an arcade stick is a must.

For games that only need digital controls? I just love that nub on the Neo-Geo CD pad...when the microswitches work properly. I know there's a similar PDP pad for the current consoles, but I keep forgetting its name, and it's said to have similar problems with the digital nub. (Also, I still need some of those rounded Saturn pads.) For games that need analog control? The X360 pad is very close with its lovely ergonomics, but they screwed it up by making the D-Pad worse than the Controller S's and also removing the analog button functionality that original Xbox pads had (and DualShock 3s still retain). The Saturn gets props for having an analog gamepad with Hall sensors instead of the usual potentiometers, but there's also this deadzone issue that really bothers me, especially on the triggers. (It changes every time the gamepad receives power, so it's not like I can keep the triggers from releasing fully and get around it that way.) Also, ergonomics aren't ideal. Oh, and before I forget, the only way to play Descent back in the day was with a Spacetec SpaceOrb 360. Nowadays, though, I use a 3Dconnexion SpacePilot with a bit of driver trickery, though that device is far less of a gamepad design-wise and is meant to sit on a desk for one-handed use.
